Really enjoying watching him play, quality with the ball at his feet running at players, good passer and has a goal in him. We have some good loans this season. As I said in the Sutton match thread. He is the closest thing to Jamie Shore that we have had since, his mercurial talents were lost to our club. The ball is stuck to his feet, his close control is another level. He has that kind of close control that reminds me a bit of gazza. Ie he can run through 5 guys.

Jamie Shore was considered to have had more ability at 18 years of age than Gazza possessed at comparable times of their careers However, the football world got to see the Geordies skills at full international level. Sadly the national team were robbed of being able to see Jamie's abilities at that level. Gazza is my favourite all time England player. The man was a genius.

Same here, Gazza was the last player we had who could genuinely take any international team of the day apart. He was like a big kid too with his antics, and as a 10 year old, it felt like gazza was really living that boyhood dream for all of us. Not only was he amazing, but he played like he cared about it. The tears I think really cemented that, I think I’d have cried if I couldn’t play in a World Cup final.

What I’m happy about is the depth we have now, looking at yesterdays side
2 good keepers
Grant can play either full back so we have 3 solid options for 2 spaces. Kilgour hasn’t had his best season but nevertheless fine to come in if anything happens to our usual two, or rotation.
Grant, Evans, Whelan, Nolan additional options in the middle
LT on the wing. Saunders maybe also.
Clarke and Loft up top.
You’d say in the best eleven Grant and Evans have to be in there but sometimes the best team isn’t comprised of the best eleven which was what Sven did wrong for England so often.

Well now we know his nickname is Billy (a la Billy Elliott) maybe we can get a song going utilising that. These are the original lyrics to the chorus of Billy Don’t Be a Hero…
Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife And as he started to go she said, Billy, keep your head low Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me
I’m sure someone can do a better job than me but hopefully this might kick start them thinking…
Billy, you’re a Gas hero, you run the midfield for us Billy, you’re a Gas hero, you’ve got us all on the bus And as the ball is stuck to your feet that’s another team we’ve got beat Billy, you’re a gas hero, take us back up.

Agree. 1989 was the year I really got into football with Rovers doing well and Italia 90 on the horizon. Gazza was the one player we all knew at school next to Lineker. I think Hoddle was wrong not to take him to the WC in 98. Imagine Gazza knocking balls through the middle for Owen to chase. Instead he took David Batty. Massive mistake. I can see the comparisons with Shorey, who knows if he would have hit the heights but he certainly had ability and potential to. Shame his knee got smashed.

Didn’t Hoddle get picked less than he should for England despite being ahead of his time? I thought the kebab incident was BS and I agree with gazza. He had a chicken shish kebab which is grilled meat and salad mainly. Hoddle was a knob to not know he was actually eating sportsman food and jus though “kebab = greasy” He was the greatest talent since….well, since I’ve been alive. He was incredibly and made the Dutch and the Germans, two of the best sides at that time, look like Sunday league ameteurs such was his talent. Any other country would have accepted his flaws and assembled a team around him to support him. Not England. I always wonder if Hoddle dropping him was his own demons playing out, he was once that player who deserved to be at the centre but as I recall, he got limited opportunities because England likes grafters

Hoddle said at the time Gazza wasn’t fully fit, when in reality, even a half fit Gazza was twice the player a fully fit Batty was. He was 29-30 at the time. Absolute peak for a midfielder.
He was certainly fit enough to destroy a few hotel rooms when he found out.

*IF* we were to make the play-offs can the loanees still play? I'm pretty certain they can as long as the loan covers the play off dates

I'm pretty certain they can as long as the loan covers the play off dates As he only signed in January then he should still be able to play, I think it was only under the old loan system that players loan periods could finish before the play offs.

Yes, Season-long loans and half-season loans done in January mean just that, the loan lasts as long as your season does. So that includes additional matches triggered by the season you’re having. The old system included something called “three-month” loans, which was the circumstance that Joe Jacobson suffered under in 2007…the play-off semis were at the beginning of May and were completed before the three month loan period expired but the final took place after the end of the loan period and was not extendable.

Elliot also got some recognition from a home fan yesterday; "I know he was playing for the other side, but I like to give praise where it's due. Very impressed by his performance yesterday. Looked him up during the game and on loan from Newcastle to Bristol Rovers and only 19 years old." www.borochat.co.uk/article/518965

Any update on Billy's injury? Just our luck to get such a fantastic player and then lose him to injury for the rest of the season.
