To be fair to him he put a real shift in. He worked his socks off and was able to cause the gk and defenders some issues by charging down clearances and making a nuisance of himself. He was clearly shattered with 20 to go was able to leave that part of the job to Loft when he came on. I was impressed by his work rate and effort. Unfortunately it remains too early to judge him on goalscoring/finishing as i dont recall him getting the ball in a dangerous position. I remain cautiously optimistic but shall reserve judgement until a few games after transfer deadline day. Agree and I thought he had decent pace, light years ahead of Pitman, Clarke and Payne. Very surprised some on here saying he had no pace. His movement found a few gaps between defenders but every pass through the gaps were overhit, a greyhound could not have caught them.

Absolute engine on the bloke! Tirelessly ran himself into the ground with zero service all day. Big John will be amongst the goals this season, no doubts.

From what I saw he has far more pace than the aforementioned. An Olympic sprinter he is not but can hardly be described as slow.

I've been thinking about John Marquis today. He consistently scored goals for a good few seasons but that has dropped off a bit recently. He got his big move to Pompey and it seems to have gone downhill from there? He initially complained about the service there when he played as a lone striker but Danny Cowley put him up front as a 2 and he still didn't do great albeit initially improving a bit. So what has changed? It's either motivation or confidence I suspect. He went to Pompey for a lot of money and the pressure of the fee may have got to him. I noted that Joey said him and Jordan Rossiter were brilliant signings and he wouldn't swap them. Are they both suffering from a drop in confidence. If it is a confidence think then Joey should be able to improve. If it's motivation then it would be worrying. Lincoln didn't seem too bothered that he didn't go back there. It seems his spell there was indifferent. He doesn't excite me so far from the little I have seen of him, seems a bit slow but on Saturday the service wasn't great to him either. Hopefully as we strengthen the squad he will improve. We're fishing in different waters to somebody like Pompey. Whereas they expected him to perform for them I would say we are hopeful rather than expectant, so less pressure for him. Time will tell I guess.. Sometimes a fresh start and surroundings, make a huge difference. I just have a gut feel that he will do well here, i cannot give any other reasons but i like the hunger he seems to have and, as you say, Barton is someone who will help him to get him playing at his best. I hope to be proved right but then, i liked Leon and was there when he came on, as a sub and scored within a couple of minutes. Look at Nichols and how he changed, in different surrounding. I think we underplay how we, as fans, can undermine a weaker persons confidence. JCH was full of praise of him too. Watch this space comes to mind as we have not yet got our squad to fully compete
