No one does deference and subservience to the rich, privileged, aristocracy better than Britain.
It made me weep too, but probably for a different reason.
David Beckham queues for 12 hours to see a dead woman in a box and is hailed as a hero.
An old woman queues on a trolley for 12 hours to see a doctor and no one cares.
Britain 2022 everyone.

I didn't weep,

The desire, the multi-agency coordination, expense, swiftness and efficiency of the Queue alone was a marvel to behold. Just imagine how lesser concerns such as homelessness and food poverty could be tackled with a similar collective will.

Lots of people took part or organised the recent events not out of deference but duty and respect. I wouldn't understate or demean their involvement. I'm not sure Beckham is being called a hero, only that he didn't abuse his fame and queued like everyone else. I care about those on hospital trolleys, been there myself many times. Just because we can do some things very well shouldn't undermine the need to be better at the everyday things too. We should do both, not neither.

But not one which, at great expense, delivers no quantifiable benefit to society, over another which absolutely does. I would call you out on duty as well, what exactly does that mean in this case, other than deference?

Cost wise, these types of events are rare and the alternative type of office you would prefer isn't necessarily cheaper either. We are coming from different ends with regards to duty or deference. I see deference as being subjugated into doing something and thinking someone is better. Nobody is better than anyone else. Duty is more to the individual who a person has earned their respect or perhaps the office they hold. Perhaps the phrase 'those who understand need no explanation, those who need an explanation will not understand' is suitable here.

When you listen to the comments from the general public about Elizabeth, isn't that exactly the case?

The age of genuine deference has long gone, whilst some may use language to imply otherwise and no doubt some still do think that way, there are plenty of voices more nuanced, anti or even openly hostile, to suggest otherwise.

Nice side swerve!! But in general, don't you feel that the comments made on camera indicated that those that spoke felt Elizabeth was better than us and "deserved" her status?

No side swerve, I didn't listen to all the interviews but probably a good selection. I'd say they covered the full spectrum but on the whole were supportive of her without going overboard. I listened to Jeremy Corbyn in the House of Commons a couple of years ago, he made a clear distinction between respect for the person whilst acknowledging his dislike for institution.
