A shame that those who do not wish to express any respect for the Queen could not be bothered to start a separate thread to debate their views. I don't know why they feel now is the right time to express their views. I'm not a royalist or anti-royalist. I've seen people who don't approve of a monarchy at least be respectful of yesterday. I guess sometimes we shouldn't judge people by our own high standards. Some will always lack class. This is exactly the right time though. After the passing of a long-standing monarch it is the right time to abolish the monarchy. Not during her rein, or the next.

There was already a thread in General Chat where the future of the monarchy was being discussed. No need to have ruined a thread for love, respect and platitudes for those that wanted that. Not all of us who do not support the monarchy are so crass. My apologies. We are not all like that.

The power of a lifetime of brainwashing and propaganda is amazing. Sad, but amazing. There are several different versions of the alternative out there, which would you choose and why? www.republic.org.uk/what_we_want

So basically shout a lot but not a clue!! If you say so mate. Plenty of major countries operating just fine without a monarch who does bugger all bar leeching public money. Your obviously talking about Mr Putin.

Doesn't explain what version you want. Do you want one with executive powers for example, or a Constitutional Head of State. Do you want to combine the roles? If we had a regular referendum to vote in a monarch would that suffice? As I said, there are plenty of options but I'm not sure which you are preferring and why it would be better, aside from the direct vote.

Anyone see what Dale Vince posted on Twitter? I’m no royalist but I’d like to think my sense of what’s respectful and what’s not is a little better. The man’s an absolute idiot, dictionary definition of a narcissist.

Just listened to a class statement from Emanuel Macron 🇫🇷 , hopefully this embarrasses the idiots in our Gov who try and stoke up divisions with the French .

Imo a very sad time, the Queen has been the most outstanding, unwavering, respected and famous lady in the whole world; she has been the one constant throughout my life, there will unfortunately never been anybody else like her, I cannot believe we will never see her again. Now gone to be with her beloved prince. RIP.

Sad days for her family, kids, grandkids and great grandkids. But really, for the rest of us? The fawning coverage on the Today Programme on R4 was a bit laughable. The sort of programming you might expect in countries like China or North Korea. Her reign as a Queen covered my entire life, 70 years now, I can honestly say she and her family have been entirely irrelevant in my life. Most of the comments on the BBC have been over exaggerated made up nonsense. I totally understand your point. Yet... for reasons I can't put my finger on.... I do genuinely feel sad. Not sure why - never met her, not overly bothered about the Monarch generally speaking - but.... I don't know.... feels like I've lost someone I knew. I fully appreciate how ridiculous it sounds and I've massively surprised myself with how much it's hit me - I think it's losing something that's been so constant. Maybe it's the things it's linked to. I don't know. I lost my mum a few years back and I've already thought once or twice "wow - my mum would have been shocked by this" and maybe it's through links to her passing I actually feel the sadness. Either way, I'm surprised at how I feel - but it's definitely genuine, as crazy as that may sound (and indeed does, even to myself).

The censorship on this forum🤣🤣🤣 Not really. Pretty much the 1 and only rule is "don't be a d!ck". Seems to me the rules are simply being upheld.

The whole mourning thing is weird and the deference placed on Her Majesty
Like, legitimately tell me why all the sport is cancelled 'out of respect' when nobody else stops working

Having a different opinion = being a dick No, we made it clear that opinions were for the general chat thread, this thread was set up so that people could pay their respects if they wished. No-one is forcing you to post on this thread, likewise no-one is stopping you from posting your opinions on the other thread.

And Gassy, yes I am asking why people are reacting the way they are. RD makes a cogent point about his sense of personal loss. I don't feel that way at all, in fact I have sneaky sense of liberation, the passing of Elizabeth (for clarity whatever my opinions I never wished her ill health or death) removes the ballast from our system of "monarchy" which, I hope, will lead to constitutional change. The fawning, ridiculous programme on R4 this morning sums up, for me, the absolute need for change.

The thing I hate the most is the fact that people call me “unpatriotic” for disliking the way my country is. How is it unpatriotic to wish my country was better? The unpatriotic ones are the strange people obsessed with the monarchy as if they do anything productive for us.
