Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers

I don't think many play their music back through a decent set of speakers any more. The sources are mainly digital and identical so things like amps and decks are sort of irrelevant. I remember having debates when younger about whether the source like the cartridge or the final output from speakers were more important. I always felt a great set of speakers could improve a cheap source, but a great input would be ruined by cheap speakers. The kids today would be blown away by a proper 1980s/90s hifi setup, imo. The tinny little things they listen on make me cringe. All that effort in the studio to create fabulous 21st century sound, and they play it back through 3 inch high Bluetooth gizmos at best and their phones more often than not. I now have active speakers. The two speakers have 2 amps in each plus the master speaker had DAC & PREAMP. No need for all of the boxes now and the sound is incredible. I agree about the speakers used now but the audiophiles are still active and always making new and better kit.

HiFi discussion takes me back. My first Hitachi set with a then new fangled CD player in 1983 (I think) cost £800, my first car a year later £250 !
A few pounds a month for all the music ever made seems a bit weird now.

Love the memories of people’s first HiFi and HP purchases - club book first stereo, those were the days 😉

A few pounds a month for all the music ever made seems a bit weird now. Depends upon which service you use and if you like to really hear all of the nuances. CD’s are still best for the amount of information stored on them but if you are not fussy and also don’t care if you were to lose all of your favourite music then streaming is ok. I dare not even start to count what i spent, over the years as it became a complete obsession. I had to stop my subscription to what was then audiophile magazine as i was buying upgraded kit way to often. £800 in 83 was a lot of money for HiFi, must have been good kit , my first set up was a Rotel preamp that went to an Cambridge audio DAC and Sony integrated amplifier and some Heco floor standing speakers. I thought i was the kiddy, that was until the Bristol audio show and i walked out of there around 3k poorer. Since i made the move to active set up, i have not spent a further penny and i made a big chunk of change , by selling my mostly NAIM kit. I do not even look on what HiFi now as i know what i would be like.

I mentioned to my partner about social links etc for The Town and she enquired for me via the Uni events team. One of the girls deals with the bands agent on a regular basis and informed us that The Town’s management are in negotiations with a “Major label” and this has effectively stopped a lot of the normal avenues of social and regular media. I will enquire if there is a link people can follow, they are signed to beating art records at the moment

Glad to see you're catering for us oldies! Woofers and Tweeters were the extent of my hi-fi equipment knowledge.

I often use several YouTube high resolution recording as a reference, when others bring their kit over and we listen. I have been stunned by just how truly excellent some of the YouTube recordings are, if you want music that has has a great deal of money spent on its reproduction then movie soundtracks are superb. Check out the Dark Knight O.S.T from the Batman story
