I agree Gaswood. Shame St Albans didn’t go up. My favourite other club, having lived there for ten years. But at least that means the local derby v Hemel Hempstead is an option over Xmas or New Year.

Watching the league 2 games it was noticeable how poor the quality of football was. Is there really that much of a gap between L1 and L2.

To not be promoted on 107 points having lost 3 games during a season must be some kind of record, had it happened. Fair play to them. It would have been a record, Wednesday will probably set one for L1 later this week. It's about time 3 teams were promoted from the NL as I'd imagine they'd all easily survive in L2. I'd go further and actually say 4 up 4 down. Certainly in the top half of the NL the clubs are professionally run and up to football league standard. 2 up is too few

I heard all the play off finals will be having the 'benefit' of VAR. Not sure if I like that or not

It’s supposed to be difficult, more just devalues it.

The fact the top 2 in the National league achieved over 100 points and goals shows how crap the rest of the league were. Now that County and Wrexham are up it does leave even more tosh in that league. Imagine 3 or 4 coming up from that lot. Will probably be more exciting next season though.

Anyone else remember when promotion to league was not automatic and it depended on a vote by the 92 clubs ? if you finished bottom of Div 4 you had to go in a ballot with conference club and hope for salvation, lots of skull duggery behind the scenes i suspect looking for votes, not sure how many clubs went into ballot, think Stanley lost their league status that way, always a nail biting time for those concerned though it did mean that if a club had one bad season(like us!) they could still retain their league status, more often than not the league club was saved which was very frustrating for those trying to get in.

I personally would like them played without VAR like all the previous games of the season, but can see why they are doing it.

Regarding the old reelection system I remember it being a complete racket. Club's voted each other back in for years in an 'old pals' act, largely at the expense of Wigan and Altrincham through the 70s. Crewe seemed to get reelected every year! It was all of the bottom four who had to apply for reelection and Barror (1972) and Workington (1977) both got voted out despite not finishing bottom (I think) simply because the other clubs didn't fancy the journey.

Edit: Just checked, Workington horribly bottom in 1977 although rest of post stands! Wigan beat Bath City in the vote to take their place

It’s supposed to be difficult, more just devalues it. Of course not. i just think 4 is optimal. It's 4 between L1 and L2 and that didn't make it easy for us. If it wasn't for 4 up from L2 three of our last four promotions wouldn't have happened. Or shouldn't we have gone up because we weren't good enough? How many of the NL promoted teams go straight back down? How many L2 relegated teams come straight back up. How many teams have done back to back promotions to L1? I would say Wrexham and Notts county are probably good bets to do that next year. The idea of divisions is so you play against similar quality and games aren't walk overs. There are lots of dross teams in the bottom half of L2 that would be worse than the top half of the NL. It's different days to when the non league was ramshackle and amature. I think for all 24 team divisions it should be 4 up 4 down.
