One player who we never thought of as dark arts but was most definitely dark arts a bit was Chris lines. I’ve seen him give out a few stamps and he was usually too clever for refs and got away with most of it.
Classy footballer, Lines, but he was very, very competitive and with that usually comes this kind of thing. Let’s face it, it works. Intimidating and winding up opponents is actually very effective. Look at the Garner team. Some good individuals but totally lacking in competitiveness and not a backbone between them

Remember a couple of kicks and stamps but, as you say, very clever with it

Look at the Garner team. Some good individuals but totally lacking in competitiveness and not a backbone between them Good shout as he could certainly max it with the so called tough guys. Remember a couple of kicks and stamps but, as you say, very clever with it Finley does a lot off the ball and gets away with a lot, but maybe when the red mist rises not all of it is so clever some times. I think he has learned the dark art of smiling offering a handshake, while telling the opponent to go forth and multiply, or patting the opponent on the head gently in full view of the ref, while also standing on their feet. Read a book about Man Us early forays into the European competitions and the opponents were full of smiles and after chopping Utd players down they offered to pick them up, but at the same time they pulled their armpit hair, spat on them, stood on them etc so any indiscretions were not clear to the ref, but any retaliation or verbals from the Man U players were clear! How often do we see refs "conned" when the main antagonist gets away with a dangerous foul, but a small retalionary gesture gets a red! As for really really bad foul (sic) it must be Josh Low slipping at Wigan. The Wigan player also slipped and the ref had totally lost it and sent Low off straight red! To be fair Jason Perry was a bit of an animal but in that game no doubt he gave Jones some verbals, but I think the ref Kevin Lynch sent both of them off when he saw Jones punch him, as he thought Perry must have done something, but never saw it, so I'll send him off anyway!

Interesting one about Lines, as you’d rarely ever see him steam into a tackle.

Gerry Harrison on Browning in the 4-0 demolition job “Just a yellow I think and nothing more”🤣🤣🤣 That Channing goal is still one of my favourite Gas goals of all time.

Probably the best all round performance v them, that i have seen I remember Malcolm Allison saying that he'd teach the players how to strike the ball so it went faster, and the very next game Channing did exactly that. We were stood behind the dugout, and it fairly shot in. Happy days

Wow brings back fantastic memories of a thrashing for the ‘82 like no other (by us).I was stood right behind where the throw in was taken for the opening goal rocket and what a pure strike of brilliance it was. That first tackle shown would be a 100% red today as the number 2 (how appropriate) was wildly out of control and off the ground for the challenge.

Probably the best all round performance v them, that i have seen I was just getting into football. I’d been to games before but didn’t have the attention span. All the kids at school were teds bar a few. My first real game I remember was 3-3 notts county at twerton. I was in the family temp stand for the 4-0 drubbing. I remember 3 city kids behind me being rude about rovers. the chief one was a fat kid. about the same age as me. As the 4th went in and the song went up, i turned around and gave a sly smirk to the fat kid (i was a fat kid too) and all 3 had tears streaming. i wish i could have drank those tears. i was hooked and the rest has been downhill all the way.
