I think we started yesterday like at team cruising to promotion with Hunt and Friend being superb additions supporting Krama and Wilson who looked as solid as hell. Sinclair was trying to set up an understanding with Friend on the left which looks good for the future and Thomas and Hunt (My MOTM) on the right. Up front we just had attacking midfielders when we got into an attacking position there was not anyone in the middle ready to receive a ball. (Totally missing Marquises in the first half when we had the upper hand) Centre midfield was the problem and I think Woods will be the answer (I hope).
No body above mentioned Evans, I thought he was immense after coming on, too late in the 2nd half that is 2 games now where I have seen him show flashes of his past excellent form.
Colins has been kept playing to try and get someone to buy him off us at an inflated price, I bet when the transfer wind closes after next Friday if not moved on he will be dropped like a stone. I would much prefer Evans starting than Collins.
As I was saying we started well as soon as Friend got booked he became restricted as we cannot afford for him to miss the next two games, he and Hunt will be ever-present going forward
I though JB did very well trying to keep cool following most of the refereeing decisions that really seemed to be going against us for most of the game.

UTG cente mid is the problem. Both ward and finley are incapable of upping the tempo when the game slows down. When they recieved the ball from defence 9 times out of ten they pass it back again.evans and Bogarde showed how to play through wycombes system.

A pass to Collins was guaranteed to be picked up by a defender and Sinclair and Thomas failed to beat their men all game. This was the first time the Friend/Sinclair and Hunt/Thomas combs had played a game, are they really going to tell from day 1? They both showed they had a lot more in their lockers than Hoole or Gordon. It'll be interesting to see if Collins is still here once the window closes and, if he is, whether he's still starting games.

There are possibly five imo (maybe a couple more) who will be getting little or no game time this season and I’m sure JB ideally will want to move on - Belshaw, Loft, McCormick, Connolly (loan out) Gibbons - they are adding little value to the team & likely to be costing the club in excess of £600k in wages + cost of employment. There also has to be a question mark over Rossiter playing professional football again at this level.

Surely that means McCormick may be just worth keeping hold of?

I think there is a good player in there somewhere with McCormick but with the signing of Bogarde & Woods he’s dropped down the pecking order and didn’t even make the bench yesterday.

I thought Bogarde had a total shocker when he replaced Finley, who by recent standards had his best game for a while, what he was doing for the second goal only he can explain. Likewise Friend was hardly setting the game alight when he was subbed off. Absolutely this. Bogarde went down too easily for their second goal. I was surprised he hasn't been taught to grab the ball on the floor and give the ref a decision to be made.

Bit of an odd one to leave him out of the squad yesterday, especially with the hindsight of seeing how poor both Finley & Ward were.

Agree with op analysis of players, not the premise.
Football is not just a team game these days, with the amount of subs, it's a squad game.
2/3 of op focussed players didn't play the 90(+) mins (of match v Wycombe), and i m o had no influence on goals conceded.
Granted (pardon the pun), their individual and collective form has been below what we know they can do, but it's only fair to be objective and mitigate there's coming back from injury, positional and personnel change that may affect their game.... and it's JAB job to have the nous to get the best out of them. Especially when they're going through poor form (which every player does at some point in their career).
A good manager shows loyalty in time and space to allow players to improve themselves. McCormick goal v Charlton reflects this...

Friend was on a yellow which probably figured into why he was subbed I think you are right! Friend got a talking to, and immediately JB told Grant to get ready. Friend has not played in a while. I was particularly impressed by Hunt. Same I was impressed by both of them! Same deal with Hunt, got booked for arguing with the ref after their second and then looked like he was losing his head before he got subbed

The loyalty to Finley and Collins completely baffles me. Neither have done much in 2023 to suggest they're League 1 quality.
Wilson would be a far better captain, Bogarde can replace Finley and any possible combination upfront could fill the "gap" left by a benched/dropped Collins.

Two will be leaving as per JAB words, so maybe this thread may be dissipated by Friday.

Of course I don't, not in absolute terms. But here is the issue, for me. We brought in several players last summer, some of whom were injury prone. That investment did not work and we finished 17th on the back of turgid football and terrible home form. We have brought in 11 players this summer and after a bright start we have witnessed turgid football and more poor home form. What's the common denominator?

I agree to some extent of your expanded post, but I felt we were on the beach for much of this year when we were pretty much secure - and that's most of the squad. My point of 3 players (as per op) being culprits of loyalty is, there are many others on off form too. AE always gets his game. Disappointing last season by his own standards....?

Huge game Saturday now. Need to see a much more positive display. If teams are going to sit back, there is no need for 2 holding midfielders. Just slows us down.
My team would be
Cox Hunt Taylor Crama Gordon Woods (or Ward) Evans Bogarde Thomas Brown Vale

I'd go with:
Belly. Hoole - Taylor - Connolly - Jones. Finley. Bogarde - McCormick. Aaza. Loft - John Marquis taking the p.
That's loyalty for you....
