I was really against VAR but we need it in this league. Those points matter, peoples jobs are on the line, and notoriously unsporting teams like Wycombe make a profession of hoodwinking and exploiting weak referees.
The way that team even acted when celebrating, there is a bad ethos within that club from top to bottom. For all the other clubs in league 1’s sake, it’s about time the rules of football were enforced properly and they were made to play the game like everyone else.
They’ve been at it for years and years, this isn’t salt over that result, it’s a cultural issue at the club and the game has a responsibility to ensure that cheats don’t prosper.
It will also be beneficial for their fans in the long term, they might get to watch some decent football.

Or stronger retrospective action needs to be taken against refs who don't clamp down on the cheating &/or miss key events in a game?
I can't see VAR ever finding its way to lower league football as the costs would be excessive, if we have VAR officials linked to live camera feeds.

VAR and retrospective action can work both ways, some you win, some you lose. Be careful what you wish for.
I do favour retrospective action where the cheats themselves are cited and dealt with. Much more effective than having a go at the ref and making the ref a scapegoat.

In this case though, it’s right to blame the ref, as it’s directly his error in not giving a blatant (from all angles) penalty with no good reason

We've seen some awful decisions go against us and you'd nearly think there was a vendetta sometimes. Refs and linos need to take some responsibility.

They do, agree, but it doesn’t resolve the issue which is that they’re all totally useless at this level. There isn’t a conveyor belt of refereeing talent to come through to this level though. That’s the problem. Punishing them for their (regular) errors won’t cut them out. They don’t do it intentionally, they’re just sh** at their jobs and you can’t inspire improvement by pointing it out.

Ah but if retrospective action against players starts to eliminate this cheating from the game, refs will be less prone to being conned and suffer far less criticism. The ref is the only person on the pitch not playing for 3 points.

See Lincoln have had a few yellows tonight.0-0 and they eventually won on pens at Sheff Utd.

See Lincoln have had a few yellows tonight.0-0 and they eventually won on pens at Sheff Utd. One of them was Joeys mate Erhahon, who is arguably their best player at the moment. Played the whole game, let hope he's shagged after that

For me, if you have professional players, the game should be managed by a professional referee.
Whilst I know there is not the pool for this at the moment, there is enough money in the game to gradually push this through. Of course it will not eliminate all the problems but if we can get referees up to a better standard by offering them full time positions whereby they can be trained more, get more experience and turn it into a career then it can surely only be beneficial.
At the moment, there is not enough accountability and as JB says, he may get an apology but that doesn't give you the points back that you may have lost from a game if a wrong decision is made. And we all know how tight the league can be and how much difference a point or 2 can make, Instead, you will see the same referee making similar bad decisions in a different fixture the following week.
I am not sure VAR is feasible at the moment due to the costs involved but professional referees should and could be a start to improving what seems to be some dreadful officiating at the moment and that also only seems to be on a downward trend.

When I stopped playing I took up reffing in local parks football for a bit. If players or managers had a go at me my usual comeback would be "if I was a better ref and you were a better player" neither of us would be in this park". The dropout rate from the people who did the course with me was close to 100% over the next couple of years. Reffing pub football is every bit as much of a pain in the arse as you might imagine. Those that kept going are who you see in league one. They are the best of a fairly small pool. Amazingly one of the blokes who kept at it was Tim Robinson who was a teenager when he started out around my time and is now reffing in the Premiership!

Please no VAR at Rovers in my lifetime. Imagine the limbs after Anderson's header last season and at the back of your mind is "it could get chalked off for an infringement in the build up"
Football is better off without it. Mistakes happen, and still do happen with VAR. I'd rather have what we have now.

Equally, there’s never going to be a 5 person VAR team at each of the following fixtures: Gas Vs Stevenage Accy Vs Salford Sutton Vs Harrogate Colchester Vs Crawley I’d say we’re safe down here in the lower reaches 😄😄😄😄😄

I think Swaby was very close to crossing the Negligence / Cheating line on Saturday - Definitely think he is anti JB and not afraid to show it.

You say they don’t do it intentionally, but in the specific case of Jevani Brown being taken out in the box on Saturday, what would the possible justification be for not awarding a penalty for that? I genuinely struggle to see any consideration when seeing that whereby the interpretation isn’t just “ok, he’s clumsily taken out the attacker whilst nowhere near the ball” so how has he unintentionally got that one wrong do we think? They should disclose this sort of stuff.

Mistakes happen, and still do happen with VAR. I'd rather have what we have now. On the flip side imagine if a Lino or Ref had incorrectly ruled out Anderson’s header and footage after the game had shown it was a legitimate goal - we’d have been fuming and moaning we’d have been promoted if there was VAR. For me miscarriages of justice and getting decisions right takes precedence over a possible loss of some spontaneous celebrations etc….

It was even more unbelievable having seen the tv camera view from the other side (I was right in line with it on the east) the defender has sprinted a good 10 yards to smash Brown out of the air. Not like he was stood within a yard or two and jumped with him in a ‘coming together’.

Annoyingly the idiot ref on Saturday was looking right at that incident from just a few metres away. There is no way that he didn't see it, he clearly has issues with Bristol Rovers and our manager. Otherwise he would have given the penalty.

Otherwise he would have given the penalty. I'm not really buying the vendetta argument. Swabey will want to get to the next level because the money is better. There will have been an assessor at Saturday's game who will have gone over his performance with particular reference to controversial decisions, and then given him a mark out of ten. I can't see him risking career progression just to put one over on JB. I'd be interested in what mark the assessor gave him though!
