I recommended Chris Martin to Rovers many years ago when he was about 19 and available for about 50k to 100k. He got banned from 68 pubs. My arguement was that we should have him already at the club in preparation for selling Rickie Lambert as I thought they were similar in playing style.
Rovers were in League 1. However, Martin went on-loan to Luton for a season in League 2 which ended in relegation out of the Football League.
Rickie Lambert was sold and I again recommended we should replace him with Martin. Luton wanted to sign Martin permanently but couldn't afford the small fee as relegated to non-league.
Rovers in League 1 failed to replace Lambert, Martin got another chance at Norwich. Rovers got relegated twice, Martin went on to have a good career in the Championship.
Rovers had had 2 windows of opportunity to sign Martin for a low fee.
It bugged me wondering whether Rovers might not have ended-up in non-league if we'd have signed Martin when we'd had the chances. It also bugged me when 82 later signed him.
At nearly 35, I don't know how good he will be but I can't help still think how Rovers history might have been different if he had been signed to replace Rickie Lambert.

In early 1973 as a 7 yead old I was bizarrely on a radio talk show with then C!ty manager Alan Dicks.
I recommend he buy Joe Jordan, he didn't listen. Joe had a reasonable season winning the First Division, heading for European success and building towards a World Cup.
I'm glad it took over a decade for him to make the move.

I guess you never know. Martin might have been terrible under the managers we had and not had the career he's had. If you look at it objectively rovers were a mess back then with an incompetent board and stream of terrible managerial appointments. Being relegated to non-league was, in some ways, the best thing that could have happened as it meant a shakeup of the club. We might not be in the position we are now, Wael might not be our owner etc etc. |
