Loss at Millwall away with those 2 kids playing...dear oh dear...then Ollie, the GasHead some think he is with his heart goes and gets Justin Richards. Implosion. Holloway was always a Gashead, whether that made him a better Rovers manager or not is another issue. I guess like PT & DC he found rebuilding a squad far harder the second time around, I'm not really sure JB's succeeded in doing that so far.

The talk of Rodman brings me to the DC and Paul Thorpe relationship which I think for football dealings wasn’t good at all, they are mates aren’t they………Ellis for £800k to Ipswich was a disaster for the Tractor Boys, and Hurst’s recommendations on Stefan Payne and Rodman were the same. I liked Alex but he was sicknote well before his serious illness. Someone made a fair comment above re Holloway and pro rata which is a good one. My only defence of Ollie even back in 2000/2001, he sold Hayles, Roberts, Zamora, Ellington, Cureton for in excess of £6 million and if we are doing pro rata, that’s probably about £15 million plus today! I look back to those days, fans paying for the Blackthorn End on 50/50 draw, what did the board really put back in them and it all started with them as well. Mauge injury, that window we brought in Junior Lewis and Wollaston, we had one foot in the Championship and I won’t forgive that board for one final push to take us up. Well remember the Mauge injury. Wasn’t Pritchard also injured at the same time? Bringing in youngsters on loan was a disaster. Remember Wolleaston but can’t recall Junior Lewis. Where did he come from?

Taking this off topic a bit, but there was a lot of talk about experienced players linked to us during that season that we didn't sign either because the board were too tight or Ollie was scared it would upset the applicant, but feel like I've never heard who they were...any ideas?

Pretty sure Roberts having his head turned, and also possibly Cureton, didn't help matters. If those two had already decided to down tools thenvsigning experienced CM's wouldn't have made much difference.

He folded long before he had vertigo and broke his foot. He was unable to match any form of intensity or play a 40 game season that he did in his Shrewsbury days, for example. Commitment is admirable, I mean, if I had the chance to play for rovers I’d give it 100% as well, doesn’t mean talent, ability or contribution across a 46+ game season should be ignored because he was commited. It was a poor signing on every level. He's obviously one who was on your hit list, like Finley is at the moment. Maybe get some binoculars to see things from on high, as I don't know how you missed his ability or contribution. I sit bang on the half way line and have one of the best views in the ground when it comes to being able to see what every player is up to. I don’t miss much. There comes a time in every footballers career where he struggles to play at the level he’s regularly played at, which is case in point with Finley and the same with Upson before him. There’s nothing wrong with that, and when it happens, it shows. The first signs that drop are pace and consistency. Rodman, in 5 years played 76 games, his longest game stint being 8 consecutive starts in his first season. It’s an abysmal record. He only played 40+ games in a season 4 times in his whole career, 3 of those were in non-league, again, pretty poor. When he was fit, match sharp and in his prime he was decent, but those days hardly came along, not least in a quartered shirt.

When GC took over from DC, the budget stood at £3.65m confirmed to me by Martyn Starnes at the time and he had to reduce it to under £3m. It didn’t help that we had highly paid contracts and long contracts given out by Hamer for Upson, Bennett, Nichols and Rodman all of whom folded like envelopes once GC left. BG and Tisdale both had £3m budgets and I’m willing to bet that JB has exceeded £4.5m this year. One thing Roadman is right about is that GC managed to get a tune out of an otherwise poor looking, overpaid squad. What's totally baffling is how Wael and MS couldn't see what a good job GC had done and put up so little fight up to keep him. Between them they probably blew the best chance we had of getting promoted since the wheels left off under Holloway. What they also saw in BG and PT is equally as baffling. JB really needs to deliver at least a top 6 push for the way he's being backed. As I understand it, by the time GC apologised for his outburst and asked for his job back they had made the decision to sack him. GC ruined his own career with that radio interview too. To think what might have been.

I think we could have coped without Mauge but Pritchard was the killer blow to that season as well as Beadle coming in and bragging to everyone how much he was earning at city for sitting on the bench after they tried signing Jason Roberts.

Playing without those two made such a difference and almost sealed our fate. ☹️ UTG!

Totally different scenarios, we had a choice in our promotion season and went for youth over experience, during our relegation season we lost players after the window closed. Although wasn't the main reason swapping Eliot Richards for Alan Gow, who was injured just after he joined us? Plus we had a useless strike force.

The Holloway season Burnley went and signed Ian Wright that window, can you imagine his personality and what it did for their camp, 15 appearances and 4 goals and they went up where as we signed youth/work experience kids! The season we went down the damage was done, DC given the reigns too late, he should have been brought in well before and given a window. This seasons budget has been used badly, I don’t get this hysteria that it’s so good, it’s like making a wedding cake and having no icing, we literally have no strikers?!?! All the crap about JCH not having an official agent, you’d have known about this prior to the deal, Lambert was 5th choice, where was our 2nd, 3rd 4th etc? This isn’t scouting going after an old girlfriend like JCH who BTW the other week looked anything but the player we sold. Lazy scouting, it’s agents scouting and who do you have lads, Friend back to Barnstaple, Wilson back home Newport, it’s all pension pot stuff, same as Pitman and Leon Clarke. I don’t see Cogs and Liam Scales scouting, DC and his non league knowledge, we sign on agent’s recommendations and Collins was found by a previous scout not employed by Barton. Oxford summed it up this summer with Harris and Rodrigues, young, hungry and pace, both frees. Even the right back was unemployed this summer, it’s really poor scouting. And if Barton goes, so does Jennings, the tail wags the dog with us and these two, we don’t have it like Exeter where the manager leaves, the infrastructure is in place. I do hope the Kuwait’s see this, Barton and Jennings have a £4.5 million budget are are last minute shopping all the time, it’s incredible. The only praise I give them that his contacts seem to let us exploit the loan market but then again, the ex PE Teacher Liam Manning who Barton ridicules these sorts has also done brilliant on the loan market for Oxford, their GK on loan won them the game, England U21 international

If we had 2nd etc choices it would have been too late to sign them once the JCH deal wasn't completed.
Personally I can't see we're making any real progress, results wise, particularly away from home, I can see us easily losing again on Saturday.
I do wonder what the new owners make of it all, are they prepared to just sit back and let Wael spend(waste?) their money, or will they want to get a more hands on approach.

We never had a second choice did we?
We bid for the lad at Cheltenham who went to Charlton, and then waited until September 1st to go for our next striker.
I am with you, I think mid table this season, one off consistency until we bring a proper striker in.
There is a reason players are unemployed now and like Martin was, it’s because clubs don’t want them and have looked at them. You can get lucky but really you are just hoping on this front, it’s not a long term signing or one you can make a profit on like Exeter and Peterborough do.
As I said, the cake might taste nice but without icing on it which is needed for this one, you will always think something is missing.

I think time will tell if he is any good for us, he obviously gives us added presence up front but agree isn't a long term option. I think we will be an OK team this year with an outside chance of play offs.

Would drifting around 8th/10th really be good enough though given the budget JB's been given?
What evidence is there we're building for a top 6 push next season, the likes of Cox will return to their parent clubs and the likes of Hunt, Wilson and Friend, will be another year closer to retiring.
Next summer will need another big overall of the squad.

Rodman had injury and health issues, he always gave 100% contribution when he played - how is that "folding like an envelope"? Also, he was signed as an out and out winger, but not played as such very often. He folded long before he had vertigo and broke his foot. If we’d have got Harris and Rodrigues like Oxford, both free’s, we’d never have even had to beg the new owners for £800k and we’d have pace upfront as well! Re Martin though, I like him a lot, we might get lucky on this one, just hope his fitness is better than Pitman (that can’t be hard!) and Leon Clarke. Topper, if we can be without 6-8 points on January 1st I’d take this now and a window to use. Personally I think Barton could be gone before then if we are more points off this, the new owners are also everything but pension pot signings……….the NBA academy is based on youth, they haven’t said much but have said the training ground and academies are important to their business model. Surely Greenslade would be worth having around the squad, it might only be Conference South but we have nothing upfront at all x.com/harvgreenslade/status/1696572460299153411?s=46&t=bhN6HOKs1kzYSj3KfeKg9Q

The bottom line was that we were missing two very good players, they were not in the team when we needed them and it had a great impact on the team. We were relegated, against the earlier times when we missed what looked like certain promotion. On both occasions the missing players impacted on the immediate future of BRFC. Of course there were other reasons for both events but don’t tell me that having no Ronnie Mauge earlier and not having Brown and Smith can’t be compared. UTG!
