Would drifting around 8th/10th really be good enough though given the budget JB's been given? What evidence is there we're building for a top 6 push next season, the likes of Cox will return to their parent clubs and the likes of Hunt, Wilson and Friend, will be another year closer to retiring. Next summer will need another big overall of the squad. Other than finishing towards the top end of the table, how else do you attract the right kind of players to build for next season? Assuming we are still in League One next season, the players we need to improve the squad will not be short of options as to which club they sign for - so we need to show them the club is heading in the right direction on and off the pitch, which 8-10th would do...

Totally different scenarios, we had a choice in our promotion season and went for youth over experience, during our relegation season we lost players after the window closed. Although wasn't the main reason swapping Eliot Richards for Alan Gow, who was injured just after he joined us? Plus we had a useless strike force. I agree Topper, quite different situations. The Holloway season Burnley went and signed Ian Wright that window, can you imagine his personality and what it did for their camp, 15 appearances and 4 goals and they went up where as we signed youth/work experience kids! The season we went down the damage was done, DC given the reigns too late, he should have been brought in well before and given a window. This seasons budget has been used badly, I don’t get this hysteria that it’s so good, it’s like making a wedding cake and having no icing, we literally have no strikers?!?! All the crap about JCH not having an official agent, you’d have known about this prior to the deal, Lambert was 5th choice, where was our 2nd, 3rd 4th etc? This isn’t scouting going after an old girlfriend like JCH who BTW the other week looked anything but the player we sold. Lazy scouting, it’s agents scouting and who do you have lads, Friend back to Barnstaple, Wilson back home Newport, it’s all pension pot stuff, same as Pitman and Leon Clarke. I don’t see Cogs and Liam Scales scouting, DC and his non league knowledge, we sign on agent’s recommendations and Collins was found by a previous scout not employed by Barton. Oxford summed it up this summer with Harris and Rodrigues, young, hungry and pace, both frees. Even the right back was unemployed this summer, it’s really poor scouting. And if Barton goes, so does Jennings, the tail wags the dog with us and these two, we don’t have it like Exeter where the manager leaves, the infrastructure is in place. I do hope the Kuwait’s see this, Barton and Jennings have a £4.5 million budget are are last minute shopping all the time, it’s incredible. The only praise I give them that his contacts seem to let us exploit the loan market but then again, the ex PE Teacher Liam Manning who Barton ridicules these sorts has also done brilliant on the loan market for Oxford, their GK on loan won them the game, England U21 international Yes, the season we went down it had been a bad season all round, starting at the previous Summer recruitment. there was damage but the damage was retrievable and despite bad decisions and Topper’s point about the Richards /Gow situation being a good one, the lack of Smith and Brown during the last few matches of 13/14 did have a huge impact. We should have stayed up even at that late stage. Our attack was awful but given we had beaten Wycombe the previous week and we went into the last game favourites to stay up then the impact of losing our two defenders did affect what happened. I suppose the two scenarios are different as are any two seasons when you compare them but losing key players, as those two were, can be compared to the earlier situation. What you’ve said about the current situation I don’t disagree with. 👍 UTG!

Fair point Wareham, you were pointing out where seasons were blown due to injuries and I forgot about Brown being injured as well. And you are right as well, we did the hard work at Wycombe, even before this we should not have been relying on getting a point against Mansfield 👍
When you look at relegations, I think Trolls squad deserved it, he had got rid of all the leaders and replaced with some terrible players. I think someone like Cogs would have kept Garner’s/Tisdale/Barton’s side up. Let’s not forget Barton came in and we were above the relegation zone, was it 4 points at the time? Horrific decision to sack Garner, not a fan of him but given his own January window and we’d have easily stayed up as well.

Why would Garner, with TW assisting him, sign better players in January than he did in the summer when he didn't seem to have a clue what he was doing? I doubt there was anyway back from the Fleetwood hammering at the Mem. Looking at the Colchester forum he seems to be repeating the same mistakes he made at Rovers, replacing experience with kids.
