It's pretty basic requirement for watching or playing football, but after watching MotD this morning you can see how serious football is.
Arsenal's Jesus is living most kids dream, earnings shedloads of money doing a job they would live to do, but the bloke hardly smiles.
Dwight Yorke used to positively beam even when he was at Villa, let alone winning most of the time at Man Utd.
With the for and against Barton situations we have had, I hope the new manager can ease the modern pressure on players and they can go out and play with a smile on their faces and create enjoyment for the fans as well.

Anyone remember Dave Thomas,Everton ,QPR and Wolves.Lost his sight in his 50's and depends on a guide dog now at 73.When he signed for Wolves ,I reffed his first game(Reserves at Molineux) and he told me as he was new to the area where would I recommend him to live.He was humble and normal in every way.Never stopped smiling. P.S.Bridgnorth was the venue we agreed on.

Interesting post. However you only need to go and watch a kids match, even at U8s, to see that the fun in football is drilled out at an early age. Parents and coaches are yelling frantically at small people who should be having fun in a competitive environment. Truth is, it's a real shame that big people lose sight of that and make it far too serious too early.

Harsh to call out Jesus at this time of the year. Itβs a big month for him, bound to be feeling the pressure.

Given the money the likes of Jesus earn then I'd be a bit worried as a fan if he was running around with a big smile on his face for most of the game.
Anyway from the games you have to hope he and the others enjoy the training and also the lifestyle his earnings bring.

Football definitely has changed.
Although we drew, gotta say I had less enjoyment on Tuesday than I did when we lost at Twerton 1-5 v Barnsley.
They were just so much better than us, you had to appreciate their quality, but to our credit we never gave up and kept trying to get a goal back. Many supporters stayed and clapped our players off at the end.
Imagine getting drubbed like that now! The boos would be ringing out after two down and the stadium would be half empty at 3 goals down.
There's no doubt the pressure to win is much more evident than 30 years ago.
Unless celebrating a goal, if a player smiled during a game now they probably get slaughtered, especially on forums for not being professional or not taking things seriously.
Remember David Speedie missing a great chance for Blackburn at Twerton and when the cries of ey-ore, ey-ore rang out. He smiled and put his fingers on the top of his head to replicate donkeys ears. No player would dare try and have that sort of banter now.

Times have significantly changed Simon, parents live vicariously through their kids, I should say some parents. They project and transfer all onto the kids and then post on social media. I know we will not see this change. The money involved, for a successful younger has played a major part in this. itβs all business now, whether we like it or not. blimey, , conference players now sell for what once was never dreamed off. Look what we paid Mangotsfield for Penrice. That would never happen now.

Speedie did go red in the face though.

How true is that,as a single mother of 3 I took my 2 boys to football, cricket rugby practice regularily, I would stand on the touch line aghast π³at the sheer vitriol of some of the parents , not a pleasant experience ! π© π

I would always have a smile plastered on my face if I made a ton of money just by playing a sport haha But seriously though, I agree OP, hopefully our new manager can bring the life back to the side and get us playing some enjoyable stuff again, which will mean so much to us fans and to the players themselves as well.
