I thought this on Saturday after a match which must rank as one of the worst I have ever watched with both teams being as bad as one another with an incredible number of simple passes going astray and some long moments where the two teams seemed intent on passing the ball back to each other. Many would probably say thank god i dont do match reports anyway! I dont do them anymore because watching the games on a TV screen is not the same as being present at the ground and seing the wide picture. Due to health reasons i have only been to one game in the last 2 years but watching Saturday made me not worry if i never watched them again. It really was that bad and what concerns me is that these players should all have been trying to show the new manager what they can do- on that performance i would suggest Sunday morning football

Used to enjoy reading them Steve , I’m sorry you are unable to go but it seems you are not missing too much. I too have been watching on tv and it’s certainly better for my mood and wallet. I will get back to i as I’ve had breaks before, after the nearly season I was so watered off that I never went to a game in 6 seasons.

It's always the same in those kind of conditions and I have experienced many games the same over the years.

Nice you’re still able to face watching the games at home in spite of your health problems and long may that continue and hopefully you feel fit enough to attend the odd game here and there. Being there on Saturday shows that I saw the same game as you, as regards the wind it was a slight problem but nothing to excuse the poor fare we all had to suffer. All the best to you!

I’m pretty crestfallen really and losing a bit of interest.
Now, I note the new directive on JB, but when we had him appointed I thought - this is different . It’s someone high profile who might have some contacts higher up. A bit unique.
Now we are back to “vanilla L1 manager” and unless we have a big budget, we aren’t going anywhere. Back to percentage football it looks like and the tedium this promotes. Boring post match interviews, we are back to being any other club and most likely will have 2 years of “wait until the next window” until we appoint another boring L1 manager with an average budget and average performance.
DC had a bit about him and wasn’t afraid to rock the boat, this was the last manager to make me feel like we had any chance of something different.
I’m going to always support the manager, MT gets the backing but it’s like going from Hollywood back to Christmas panto in terms of excitement. Has to be said, even Neil Warnock or someone like that might have roused a bit of enthusiasm.
I’ll always be a gashead and I’ll always go when I can and I’ll always be behind every single person at the club while they’re in charge as I’m loyal to the end, but I haven’t been this uninspired for a long time.
Forget this season too, we’re brought in a percentage manager with a load of cultured footballers so yet another “rebuilding” job until about 2025. Yawn.

I totally get you and share everything you have said here. The light at the end of the tunnel was after all just a train hurtling towards us and not the progress I craved. Throw in that everything apart from cost about our loved club is at a pretty amateur level now... and 50 plus years has finally taken it's toll. Little things spoiling the match day experience that previously I would have done something about with a laugh are getting me down now ... I am very close to not renewing my season ticket next season no matter what division we are in. IFollow will be fine. Steve ... I miss your reports mate - they were always a good read. Hope you are doing better my friend.

As always far too much pessimism and fatalism on here after a bit of a sticky patch. A few wins and you’ll all have smiles on your faces again. 😀👍

( If I'm allowed to ) But saturdays match especially the first half was one of the worst certainly in my top five of games I have witnessed in the 60 plus years of going to watch Rovers. At one point I think we were defending a corner with about 7/8players on the line and not one further up the pitch than the penalty spot. If I'm to renew my season ticket I will need to see a vast improvement.

Whether or not you thought that was a good team or just an organised team who lucked out with a brilliant striker (my view), it was awful. Awful. Entire matches of nothing. I hope that this isn’t what awaits us but former clubs tell us otherwise. We have a team now who realise they are probably surplus to requirements…. I’d love to be proven wrong and let’s hope MT shoves those words up my backside. I’m not saying he’s not going to be a success eventually, but just it’s all a bit Meh

Yawn. it does now feel like we just rejoined the pack of midtable teams that hope to have a good season every few years. Personally enjoyed something different for a few years that set it apart from the previous 40 years of same old supporting this club

His Exeter team I saw in L2 and L1 was very good to watch. The right amount of skill, passing and possession with actual intent and end product!

It’s been a bit stale all season really. Pompey was almost a great start. Barnsley were played off the park but got a draw and Wigan were thumped. But, I’ve personally witnessed the Lincoln, Wycombe, Stevenage, orient and then Cheltenham games under 3 different managers and there was nothing what so ever to inspire me. Some real awful spells of football, although we do seem to defend our box well. So we need a shake up, I don’t think this is a quality footballing squad that will struggle to dig in and go long etc. I think they need guidance and a fixed plan that they can all buy in to and then we can start to pick up points. Two wins out of the next 3 for example will have us doing cartwheels so we have to hope and support, it’s all we can do.

I do miss your match reports Steve, though I generally felt you were way too mean to Ollie Clarke back in the day as he wasn’t that bad. And we’ve had many worse.
Goodness knows what’s going on at the moment but I hope Matt T can fix it briskly, or at least hold us steady until the summer.

The owners said they had invested plenty and expected an 8th place finish. That will still be the target for MT. The board certainly wont be happy writing this season off.

The way we played on Saturday finishing 8th from the bottom surely is the target now, if you think a top 8 finish is still on the card then you're living in cloud cuckoo land. Tomorrow night is now a massive game for MT as he can't afford a hammering at a L2 side.

They’re living in dreamland if they seriously expect a top 8 finish. Not only do we have a new manager with a squad of players that aren’t his and it seems don’t necessarily fit the style of football he wants to play, but we’ve also lost 4/5 key members of staff and have zero recruitment setup at the club with just three weeks until the next transfer window. I agreed with the decision to part ways with the poundland Andrew Tate we previously had in charge, but there’s no doubting that we’re a bit of a mess currently.

Nice statement stevek192 and I too miss your reports. Didn't always agree with them but I really appreciated the time and trouble you put into creating them. Hope your health issues improve soon. As for the match, I can't believe people are writing MT off after one league game. To be fair, I wrote Joey off before his first game, but that was for other reasons. Many many others. Taylor hasn't had a good start but he's about 100 metres into a 10,000 metre run. And he's wearing someone else's running shoes until he gets his own pair. Sort of.
