This is going to be similar to the 1997 election where a tired electorate boots out an even more tired Tory party after too many years in power, and sees Labour not as a risk but as an opportunity.
The difference I think is that Blair was very charismatic and promised a lot. There was excitement in the air then.
Starmer is much more circumspect and it won't have the same buzz, but it can only be a good thing for the country.
Maybe step 1 (of very many) to rejoining the EU.......?

I wonder what the actual trigger for the decision was? Yes, the economy is slightly better than it was (not a good reason). Yes, Labour are still behind selecting (or at least announcing) candidates (not a good reason). None of the recent Conservative objectives will be met by July and Labour just announced the start of their campaign.
“I’d be f**king amazed if they called an election” was a quote from a Conservative MP a couple of hours before the election was announced. I wonder what the actual trigger-reason was...?

Clearly the economy will continue to improve over the next few months. The key Conservative objectives will be met by Autumn. So if you didn't understand the question, would you like me to explain it further?

Clearly you are a smug tw4t 🙄 If you don’t understand my reply I’m not going to waste my time explaining it to you I was asking a serious question. Clearly something triggered the decision to call it for an unusual date - a date that was not suggested at or hinted at until a few hours before it was announced... It was clearly last minute otherwise the announcement would not have been outside in the pouring rain...so does anyone else have any thoughts about what triggered it? ...apologies for having to explain the question further anyway, hope I didn't offend....

Ok Super , give us your thoughts on why he called it at this time ? Let me chip in,there's a school of thought that says the economy will not improve over the 2nd half of the year, this week's reduction in inflation was driven by the significant reduction in the energy cap, that is likely to go up again laterthis year. So,on the basis that this is as good as it gets before an election has to be called later this year might as well give it a go now

Finances are most likely in a much more perilous state then they are letting on and another 10 billion now having to go to the blood scandal victims. As I said earlier….. this is as good as it gets for Sunak Not forgetting the border check chaos heading our way in the autumn

In fact with mortgages still high, possibly feeling worse off. They also won't want to clash with the US election so rules out another series of dates in the Autumn. Apparently one quarters worth of growth is evidence that we are doing better than the US?😆

Disconnect between public and politicians? "Mr Harper said he accepts one piece of data is not "the only thing" but there have also been eight months of wages rising. He added that while there is "further to go", the choice for voters is about "do we have a plan and is it working?". Asked for the party's top three priorities, he said it was stopping illegal migration, the economy, and security. But Sarah-Jane said when she spoke to members of the public, their priorities were housing, the cost of living and the NHS. The fourth priority was schools." news.sky.com/story/politics-latest-sunak-starmer-davey-tories-labour-lib-dems-general-election-12593360?postid=7716583#liveblog-body

Because they can't deliver on housing, cost of living or the NHS. All 3 priorities of the people have got worse under the Tories and even under Sunak's short leadership. Its amazing how they're genuinely convincing people to think that the actual priority is the boats. Funny how Labour's top priorities are all the priorities from the public. But apparently they don't have a plan?
