Maybe you all should read the full detail before commenting? For some this might be a 12-month paid placement in the armed forces. But for most it will be 25 days/year volunteering with the emergency services or charities. Not hard to imagine that for up to half a million teenagers each year... We all know this detail.. perhaps you could enter civilised debate as a standard without patronising and trying to be the smartest person in the room, which has just done the opposite effect. How bias can one be to think mandatory military is a good idea? Or what’s the alternative to being sent away for a year? Free “voluntary” Labour to make up for all the cut backs we’ve made in the last 14 years to our services. So tell me, what are your thoughts on this policy?

I'm sure, in the unlikely event it were ever to be passed into law, the community service would be the one chosen by.....everybody. Rishi Sunak knows that, of course, and it's just a pathetic vote winning promise that we all know will never be implemented. Which votes it will win, I don't know. People over 90?

In terms of the proposals, they are just that and simply pandering to the possible Reform voters. Merely headline grabbing. As for the policy itself, who does this benefit? The armed forces? No. The people themselves? There are much better ways to do it. Why not just say everyone should be encouraged to volunteer for the 25 days and leave the Carry on Sergeant-esque National Service aspect out?

Apologies for pointing this out again but the proposal is not for mandatory military service. My thoughts are that 80+ countries actually have a similar policy in place (including Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Singapore, France, Estonia, Lithuania) and others are considering something similar (like Germany). Yes, I was being patronising (again) - only because so often people in here so often jump to the wrong conclusions yet post their opinions as absolute fact, despite the actual facts of the topic being widely available with a quick search of the news...

"The president of the Birmingham Young Conservatives has defected to the Lib Dems in the wake of the Tories' national service announcement. The scheme would give 18-year-olds the choice of a year-long full-time military placement, or volunteering for one weekend a month in a public service like the NHS. But the move has been met with disquiet from the youngest corners of the party. Harvey Whitby, 20, called the plans "particularly concerning" and said he feared they would not just lose the party the election, "but lock us out of government for a generation or more". He said, by contrast, the Liberal Democrats offered Britain a "true centre party", posting a statement on X with the simple caption: "I'm done." Is the plan that the law states you have to do military service or forced to do volunteer service if you can’t do military service? Those aren’t thoughts, those are claims that other countries are considering (not making election pledges) something similar. That is just a flimsy statement, not a thought or opinion. Presuming you know what one of those is, why don’t you tell us your opinion on this? So tell us, what has everyone said on here that is so factually incorrect that you feel the need to be so patronising and intellectually superior, rather than just making a civilised point? I’m very curious what made you think, ‘I now have the right to put myself above the others here and talk down to them’.

“Sunak now turns to Labour leader Keir Starmer's first major campaign speech earlier today in West Sussex. "Was there one single new idea in that speech?" Sunak asks. "No", the crowd of supporters answers for him.
"He will say and do anything to get into power," Sunak says.” - BBC on Sunaks campaigning today.
Not sure he understands what that phrase means…
