Perhaps suffering a crush fracture to his spine knocked his confidence a bit, hopefully, that's returned following his good loan spell at Morecambe, MT seems to have recalled him at the first chance he's got. I would imagine Matt acted so promptly because if the injury prognosis of James Wilson leaving us short in defence 😔 I doubt we were that much better off when he was let go out on loan as I assume Grant was nowhere near match fit and Friend either hadn't signed or was injured/not fit!

Had a poor back end of last season next to Quansah, but had a good game at Portsmouth.
He did seem short on confidence but having seen what Taylor has done with a lot of the squad already, I'm pretty sure Connolly is going to learn a few things which I hope he can put into effect.

Hopefully he won’t be required too much as his loan to a lower division hasn’t been a great success. A preseason under MT and his staff will hopefully make in to the player we all want him to be next season. Morecambe fans seem to think he was great and their best defender. So pretty successful for him personally I’d say

James. Welcome back.
The players that go all the way to the top do so by learning to cope with disappointment, adversity and pressure.
This could well be your time to shine.
You initially joined The Gas as a raw youngster.
You return having now played 72(+8) games and scored 5 goals since Jan 8th 2022.
You have had 11 Yellow cards and 1 Red card.
This is now a fresh start which you can approach with confidence because you are now an experienced "old hand".
Good luck in the next five months.

I’m hopeful he’s a success again but I think deep in my heart I know he’s not good enough.

I’m hopeful he’s a success again but I think deep in my heart I know he’s not good enough. Let's see how he plays under the new manager before making any judgements, we've no real idea what pressure JB put players under when things weren't going well for them. Playing as part of a back 3 may well help his game.

I’m hopeful he’s a success again but I think deep in my heart I know he’s not good enough. I agree in the here and now but I’m not writing him off altogether. I’d like to see him have a pre-season working with the new manager and coaches and hopefully we’ll see a new player. Switching to 3 CB’s meant we needed cover anyway but Wilson getting injured means we now need an experienced CB to come into the starting XI.

Wasn’t it JB that signed him from obscurity? Might have this wrong but I’d be thinking that if anyone the manager that gave me a league debut had enormous faith

That's if you can call being employed by bigger clubs than Rovers being in obscurity.

But yeah - we gave him his league debut when we signed him on loan. It sounds like he was doing alright at Morecambe too. The online comments from their fans after it was announced we were recalling him suggested that they are pretty gutted to lose him. Hopefully he can take that form and build on it at League One level.. and rekindle that relationship with CT that was so solid in L2 a few seasons ago.

As for LT didn’t he sign for Barnsley for over £1m? Not really thinking that’s the same. I’ll hold my judgement from the Morecombe fans and make my own decision. After all they also rated Ayunga.

Realy happy about this, I’m hoping he can reform his successful partnership with Connor Taylor.

I didn't mention LT? Nor could I comment on how close Beefy was to getting a first team appearance for Cardiff - although would have made far more sense for them to test the water with him further down the pyramid before giving him a run out in the Championship (which is what they did do). Not sure exactly what your point is actually.. on the one hand you were singing Barton's praises for plucking this kid from the obscurity of a Championship club keen to give him minutes - but then you also say you are reserving judgement on the lad (despite him having played a part in our promotion season and already playing a bit in L1 for us before dropping down the pecking order when we signed some more experienced)? *shrug*

I’m reserving judgment that he’s gonna be any better before we shipped him off on loan to League 2 Morcombe where he has been integral to them getting to 17th None of us can be sure how close beefy was to the 1st team at Cardiff but I’m guessing it wasn’t that close as we didn’t need to twist their arms too much to get him. Championship clubs don’t often sale their better players to L2 teams - it typically it goes the other way. Of course he was an obscure singing not even Pirate had mentioned him, and any success he’s had in part should be credited to JB signing him and developing him. My personal opinion is that he’s not good enough. Hope that clears everything up for you

Any success he has had in his career should be credited to JB signing him (but also he is not good enough ) FWIW nobody was saying he was one of Cardiff's "better players" either FFS - where did you get that from? He was a young prospect they sent on loan to a club a few leagues down (as most clubs do with their youth players). I guess the idea was to develop him for the first team or at least attract a fee from a transfer. In fact after his successful loan spell with us they even renewed his contract. I'm fully behind him. Really would have liked to have seen him in a 3 with CT and Wilson - but I guess that is unlikely to happen now. Exciting to see what MT can do with him though. Definitely a player in there IMO.
