I prefer male commentators just because I think they’re better at it. But I guess you have to keep practicing to get better at anything and it’s not going to change so I suppose in time the female commentating will improve. I hope so because the majority of them do grate a bit. Two words: Micheal Owen Also all this chat about women not being able to comment on the mens game reminds me of the Arrigo Sacchi quote "I never realised that in order to become a jockey you have to have been a horse first" Do you think someone who has never raced as a Jockey could provide expert analysis (not commentary) on Channel 4 Racing and explain how a jockey got his tactics wrong during a race or his technique jumping over a certain fence was wrong?

Former employee embarrassing himself further on social media. For those of you who told us he wasn’t sexist go and have a look at his latest drivel. And before any of you come firing shots at me for carrying on about him, it’s relevant to us cause it’s a conversation we had many times when he was here and despite clear evidence at the time that he held sexist views, many on here tried to defend it. Hahaha how sad, you do know your little group of haters, are actually a minority of the supporters. Let's get it right Wael employed Joey knowing his back catalogue, so let's not get so morally superior. Joey has moved on and currently building a new podcast studio, if nobody is interested in his views (which are not necessarily shared by others) then his podcast career will be short lived. What I remember of Joey was his ability to attract very good players to BRFC, such as Elliot Anderson, getting the club promoted, and thousands of supporters chanting his name and carrying him shoulder high on the pitch after that fantastic result at Rochdale. Now is the time to move on, and just hope the new messiah Tisdale 2 backs up his talk, starting on Saturday. Tisdale 2 on what basis? Backs up what talk, he seems quite grounded to me?

As much as I don't have time for him, I think his point is that anyone who hasn't featured at the top level of the game shouldn't be hired as an expert pundit (as opposed to commentator or presenter). I personally think there's validity in that view, but he expresses it very poorly and provocatively. Agreed - when watching any sport I want the ‘expert’ analysis to come from someone who has been there and done it at that level. I don’t want to watch England at a World Cup and then have someone who has played only conference level for example to be providing the analysis. They haven’t played at that level, same with women players. Another example could be cricket. How can you seriously have ‘expert’ analysis on Joe Roots defensive technique when facing 100mph bouncers when the highest you’ve ever faced in the women’s game is say 75mph? Completely pointless and no value to the broadcast. However, there is absolutely no reason why women can’t commentate and describe the action (I get some don’t like the high pitch though) or be the Lead Presenter of a show like Match of the Day or Sky Super Sunday etc… This is why I don’t read your posts. Why would anyone ever bother reading the posts of someone who’s not posted at the highest level. Have you ever been paid for your opinion? A critic? If not, I just don’t want to see it. Completely pointless and no value to the forum.

The 'Joey Cult' are up in arms again, posting on threads that they apparently 'don't care' about.
If you don't care, stop posting in them you absolute bunch of fecking morons.

Think you're missing the point of the quote, but seeing as we're down a rabbit hole, could you describe to me how a woman jockey would have no expertise compared to a male one? At least thats how I think you're comparing male and female pundits?

Gave up reading after 3 posts knew who would be contributing and what drivel would be spouted out. Why can't people move on there is plenty more to talk about than an ex manager and his social media account. I don't get if you don't like him why do you follow him? I can't say I follow anyone I don't like on X or Instagram.

I don’t follow him but I do read news outlets that report on his dross, I am In group chats with fell gasheads who share links in the chats. If you gave up reading why bother posting? Some of us like to discuss it. Nobody is making you contribute

How is gender relevant to commentating? Motson, Tyler Pearce etc didn't play professionally. A (weak) case could be made for pundits needing to be men, but not commenters. Very good counter argument to what Barton said. I think there are two parts to commentating. Part one is to be able to communicate the enthusiasm for the game and to time. Your outbursts properly in line with how the game is going. I believe this can be done by anyone male or female and perhaps it's more show business than actual analysis. Part 2 is communicating the understanding of the game which I think is correct in that it can only be done by someone at the same level. Now women's football and men's football is not at the same level. So I think he's right here that proper analysis can't be done by a woman of men's football in terms of the physicality of it, which he does make imparently clear. I don't think what he said is sexist. There are roles that men can only commentate on and vice versa. How many male pundits are there giving advice on how to give birth?

Micheal Owen isn’t a commentator. He’s a pundit. I wasn’t talking about pundits. Oddly specific, but meh. Really don't care enough to have the row I wasn’t looking for a row , just stating that I prefer male commentators to female 👍

Wow! JB strikes again. What a ridiculous view that the sex of the person impacts their expertise on a subject!! I had to turn off the commentary on Spurs v Man City as Gary Neville has zero clue what he was talking about!! Easy argument to dismiss. How many male commentators are there on what it's like to be pregnant? I do agree your second point that Neville is a tosser and sometimes a poor commentator can stop you enjoying the match. Have listened to many a game where the commentator is female and enjoyed it. Think rule is commentator= showbiz anyone can do it. Punditry only those at same level of game. This probably applies to men commentating on the women's game as well in terms of physicality.

Everybody has the right to an opinion yes even Joey Barton its called freedom of speech, some of his points are valid others not so, Joey's problem is he comes across as offensive more often than not. I'm another that prefers male commentators but that doesnt make me a sexiest it's called having an opinion and preference

Who is comparing the way women play to the men's game? It is the same game, the difference is physicality. Physicality does not prevent a women from commentating on men playing the game anymore than the males who commentate, most of whom have never played professionally. But physicality is foremost in Barton's mind it seems, most likely because he lacks it. He displays all the symptoms of "Small Man Syndrome" and the intellect of a yapping dog. Thank god he is no longer with us. I have to say that I am not keen on having women’s football rammed into our homes. I used to enjoy FF but do not watch it now. IF the game was a stand alone product and not heavily subsidised then I would like to see the attendances and interest. One thing you cannot do is to compare it with the men’s game. just my own personal view. Conversely soccer a.m used to have Helen and I enjoyed that but that was much more lighthearted I am not a misogynist but i much prefer listening to an experienced ex players over a female plus I feel a disproportionate bias in pushing the ladies game. Just my own preference. I would never presume to tell others what to watch or listen to though Women's football is a cheap option for terrestrial who can't afford Sky rates like I can't. The other thing I have realized is that they are a different level of supporter or viewer of football compared to myself. I like the knowledge of the game or having played any kind of high level and what happens in the premiership is sometimes is too fast for my eyes to even see. So I'm of more of the tubthumping enjoyment of football and I think if you want a premium then you have to pay for it
