He's just demonstrating further his lack of understanding of football in general, and of how times have changed for the better. It's probably for the best that he'll likely never work in football again

Do you think someone who has never raced as a Jockey could provide expert analysis (not commentary) on Channel 4 Racing and explain how a jockey got his tactics wrong during a race or his technique jumping over a certain fence was wrong? Think you're missing the point of the quote, but seeing as we're down a rabbit hole, could you describe to me how a woman jockey would have no expertise compared to a male one? At least thats how I think you're comparing male and female pundits? A female ex jockey is perfectly qualified to provide expert analysis if she has been competing at the same level as the male jockeys, no problem with that whatsoever. I wouldn’t expect expert analysis to come from someone (male or female) who hasn’t competed at that level though. Using my other example. Do you think a female cricket ‘expert’ can give the viewer an insight in to what it is like facing a 100mph bouncer and provide a critique on a batsman’s technique in dealing with such deliveries when they’ve no experience of it themselves? For me it’s all about qualification to be an expert analyst not gender. I can’t take seriously someone who hasn’t competed at the same or similar level, it’s completely pointless. Presenting a programme or being a commentator is totally different - gender shouldn’t be a barrier.

Agreed - when watching any sport I want the ‘expert’ analysis to come from someone who has been there and done it at that level. I don’t want to watch England at a World Cup and then have someone who has played only conference level for example to be providing the analysis. They haven’t played at that level, same with women players. Another example could be cricket. How can you seriously have ‘expert’ analysis on Joe Roots defensive technique when facing 100mph bouncers when the highest you’ve ever faced in the women’s game is say 75mph? Completely pointless and no value to the broadcast. However, there is absolutely no reason why women can’t commentate and describe the action (I get some don’t like the high pitch though) or be the Lead Presenter of a show like Match of the Day or Sky Super Sunday etc… This is why I don’t read your posts. Why would anyone ever bother reading the posts of someone who’s not posted at the highest level. Have you ever been paid for your opinion? A critic? If not, I just don’t want to see it. Completely pointless and no value to the forum. I’m not being employed as an expert analyst. If I appeared as an expert on match of the day I wouldn’t expect anyone to give my views any credibility whatsoever because I haven’t played the sport at that level. I can still have an opinion on football, same as anyone else in this country regardless of gender.

Not all top players are good pundits. I expect there are some football followers that are very good pundits, they probably watch more games than a professional player.
We have a lot of pundits on here!

Gave up reading after 3 posts knew who would be contributing and what drivel would be spouted out. Why can't people move on there is plenty more to talk about than an ex manager and his social media account. I don't get if you don't like him why do you follow him? I can't say I follow anyone I don't like on X or Instagram. Gave up reading after the five words. If you don't like it, don't post on it - or better yet, read it...?! Read what I wrote I said I didn't read it and I commented to say what drivel was being spouted by the holier than thou. Don't give two hoots whether you read 5 words or not don't care what you think of me as you don't know me and don't care about JB and what he gets up to now as he isn't with us. But I imagine you won't have read all this as you would have given up after one sentence.

Some of us like to discuss it. Nobody is making you contribute I can post on whatever I like, don't have to read the drivel you spout which I didn't and had an opinion on the subject.

We have a lot of pundits on here! Totally agree not all top players make good pundits but playing at the level you are being asked to provide expert analysis on must surely be a minimum requirement. An example could be someone like Dean Windass, qualified by experience but useless at delivering the analysis to an expected standard. Rightly didn’t last long. Forums, social media, phone-ins, fans podcasts all provide a platform for the non expert opinions from both genders.

Also, there are numerous pundits, each will bring their own perspectives. Can a panel of strikers fairly critique a goalkeeper? They seem happy enough to critique a referee despite not having refereed themselves. An opinion is just mitigation of an unlived experience and you just weigh up which you want to listen to. If we've not played either, how do we know who is correct?

I prefer male commentators just because I think they’re better at it. But I guess you have to keep practicing to get better at anything and it’s not going to change so I suppose in time the female commentating will improve. I hope so because the majority of them do grate a bit. I agree I'm not saying we shouldn't have female commentators but there are few out there that are simply clueless and are very grating to listen to. Even so there are some male commentators I can't stand listening to either Jonathan Pearce being one of them (plus he's a TED) his voice just grates on me.

Don't do it Joey.
Piers betrayed our armed forces in pursuit of headlines and should have been jailed.
No way back if you are endorsing this Key Ant, Joey.

Ah gotcha, so Robbie Savage commentating on Europa League games makes your blood boil as he's never played at that level? Or is it just when its women? Its fair enough you can't take someone seriously that hasn't played at the level, but where we disagree I think is that the mens game is a higher 'level' than the womens game. Different for sure, but the Lionesses played (and won) a Euros final in a packed Wembley. I don't see why that is 'lesser' than when the men played.

Righto! I'd maintained a level of respect for him until now. But, mouthing off about female commentators, now debating the"XX takeover" with the odious uber gammon, dead child phone tapper, Morgan, is (another) low. He's obviously looking to be "edgy, " outspoken" and "not afraid to say what others won't" for the sake of a media/internet career. With this he is creeping towards incel Andrew Tate territory. He can fornicate right off. I'm properly glad he's gone!

Different for sure, but the Lionesses played (and won) a Euros final in a packed Wembley. I don't see why that is 'lesser' than when the men played. Savage competed regularly in one of the best leagues in world football. Most Europa league games are a lower standard than premier league. The jockey example is very clear, men and women are competing in the same sport together so both equally qualified to provide expert opinion when they retire. Men’s football clearly is a higher level than women’s football and will forever be separate entities as they will never be able to compete together. My arguments are all about suitability to be considered an expert and not simply based solely on gender. As I’ve said before no issue with female commentators or presenters in football. I’ve no issue with females being presenter, commentator and expert analyst in sports such as Horse Racing where they have experience at that level of the sport.

If we've not played either, how do we know who is correct? Many aspects of cricket will be vastly different. The amount of rpm a spinner can put on the ball will be different. The speed at which a ball flies off the bat and how much more difficult a catch can be in that circumstance will be different. The men’s and women’s games are vastly different, just share the same rules. In terms of those who are paid to provide opinion during a sports broadcast it will come down to personal preference. Personally, I want to hear the insight of someone who has experience of that level of the sport (in some sports there’s no reason why that can’t be a female) Others may prefer a random guest with experience at a far different level - I think most people would switch channels if there is not what they consider an expert doing the analysis.
