If we're going to ditch anything, maybe the Pirate in his current form. He's about as intimidating as candy floss. We all agreed they can't be trusted with that...

Shall we ditch the quarters whilst we are it? It is part of Rovers, it is tradition and it should stay. The Mem belting out Goodnight Irene after an important goal, result or even in memory of someone still gives me, and I suspect most other Rovers fans, goosebumps. Red and white quarters would look quite fetching.

Goodnight Irene has been sung continuously since the 1950s, and is now sounding its age. A new Rovers song will be a breath of fresh air for a forward thinking club! Are you serious ? if you are ~ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💙 no offence intended Utg Just a plonker out fishing

Being honest goodnight Irene isn't sang as loudly , with as much gusto or by as many people as gas go marching in is sung these days. I've noticed that for the last 2 seasons. The initial phase is completely rushed and mumbled then the chorus lasts a matter of seconds. Gas go marching in lasts longer and is sang much louder now imo.

Apologies all but it was a great game. The Bristol fans were all singing along to Adge and his ditty. It took me back to the days when we also sang it before the other lot claimed it. I suppose it is more of a Somerset song.

How about we ditch the IRA song first? Detest that chant. Who actually starts that every game?

Goodnight irene is fine if sung well,Alex Harvey did a good version, but sadly our speed freaks rush through it quicker than the Japanese bullet train. It would be great once a game if sung slowly and all three verses. Sadly not much hope, too busy singing stuff I don't even know the lyrics to these days.

I've started taking my son over the last 2 years and he loves singing along to Goodnight Irene! Nothing like it when in full song. Does anyone know the history behind it out of interest? The famous Ledbelly song was covered and was high in the charts. It was quite typical of crowds to sing chart favs ( probably most famous with the Beatles at Anfield.) We were losing at half time to Plymouth and they started to sing it. Some say they ad libbed with a few goodbye comments to say the game was over. We played well in the second half and as we started to get back in the game it was Rovers fans who started singing it. We won and it was adopted forever as our song (as it should always be). Like Weetabix at Shrewsbury and Del Shannon's Runaway and The Rocky Theme at Twerton , the Gas Works and mud at Eastville, there is more about being a Rovers fan than just the 11 players on the pitch.

Absolutely agree, Alex Harvey's, the SAHB version is tremendous, "gud gud gud Irene" imo this is the version the team should come out onto to the pitch before the game to; it should also be played when the supporters leave the ground. This is a fantastic idea, I was brought up listening to SAHB, AH RIP.

Like Weetabix at Shrewsbury and Del Shannon's Runaway and The Rocky Theme at Twerton , the Gas Works and mud at Eastville, there is more about being a Rovers fan than just the 11 players on the pitch. Heard several explanations of the origins of it but definitely Argyle are at the heart of it. My old man said Argyle brought it with them and were singing it at Eastville which ties in with your story and he said that when we went ahead we sang Goodnight Argyle at them and at the next home game we sang Goodnight Irene again and won, then it became a superstition after that. The other version of the origin story, which I find less believable, is that it was played over the PA system at halftime in a game against Argyle and the operator couldn’t shut it off as the second half started and we scored whilst it was still playing… again we started singing an adapted version of the song as argyle were duly bidden goodnight. Whatever the origin it has remained a unique rallying call for Rovers since the mid fifties. I recall Shrewsbury Town fans remarking that they thought our stirring rendition of it at Wembley lifted the Trollope side after the early goal and that they wished they had their own song to counter it with once we’d taken control of the game.

Also for some alternative humorous lyrics the Bob Hope version is mildly amusing.
