Shame that people need to over analyse and get offended by everything isn’t it.
What exactly happens when someone becomes offended? Are they physically or mentally hurt?
No, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing.
Just enjoy the football and don’t overthink everything anyone says.

And as for the morons in the South Stand who sparked up with ‘the only good city fan etc’ directly after the very respectful 2 minutes applause for the two lads who were murdered, quite unbelievable. Now there is something genuinely offensive

I didn't know that. WTF is wrong with people. Have people been moved from the Thatchers to South to add to the atmosphere or improve the chances of agro with away supporters.

As a English born supporter of an Irish Mother I find this a little annoying especially as there has been peace now for 26 years. I was in the Royal Navy for 5-6 years before the GFA and even as an active member of the forces' before, during and after I personally have never had a problem in Ireland. The only occasion was in Cork in 98/99 when I went into a pub not realising it was a RA pub, my bristol accent gave me away but in respect they were fantastic and polite which knocked me as I thought I'd Be in for a right kicking. That was one great night in respect. I love Ireland dearly but this song clearly is outdated and needs to go.

As pointed out, most of the kids weren't around when IRA was active. It's not that deep.

Balance this twenty seconds with what the green brigade at Celtic sing, and it's hardly worth mentioning.

I can't usually be arsed to get involved with the controversial stuff on here, but after recently retiring as a deputy head of a secondary school in Portsmouth I have first hand experience of this. A bunch of lads, 15 and 16 had taken to singing this song in the playground. At Pompey the last line is " f--- the Pope and the IRA." As do Glasgow Rangers. I asked these lads what they knew about Irish history and politics. Nothing of course. However many were from naval families and the IRA were just on their list of historical enemies. I explained that from my point of view the IRA had (from their perspective) legitimate and honourable intentions from the 1920s, but by the 1970s had turned into a bunch of gangsters blowing up teenagers in pubs. They stopped singing it in school, but probably still sing it at Pompey. At least they know why..... I don't much like the one about dead City fans. Sorry, a lot of this is probably boring but it did touch a nerve. Unsure of what part of the curriculum that fell under. You pay someone to teach your kids to read and write and suddenly they come home with all the same political ideas as the teachers. Funny that!

Not in my case, then again I went to my local comprehensive and if anything, I did a bit of the teaching as some of my classmates preferred speaking to me. 😇

Reading the comments and suggestions of changing the lyrics even this idea will struggle to be effective as certain element are so used to singing it. Maybe a different approach would be to start booing when the song is started if this is implicated every time the chant is attempted, the message will soon get out that it's not an appropriate chant to be singing.
Enforcing bans is not the way to go IMO

I’m still waiting for someone to explain why a chant about a terrorist organisation who were at war with the UK until quite recently is offensive. It’s not my song, I don’t sing it. I do need to know if I’m asked to endorse grabbing people by their arms and legs and throwing them out of public events for speech, why this is necessary. I’d imagine the Irish would have right to be more watered off, given the blood spilled and murders at a sport stadium but you will not stop people hating on each other Croke Park? That was a different era and a different IRA. The song is pretty irrelevant now and time it was retired. Wouldn't ban it, hopefully it'll just fade away.

Different but still murder of non armed people Indeed, plenty died earlier that day too and many more before and after. My point is that this song is referring to the Provisional IRA of the 1970s and after, not the original IRA.

Disagree with op.
Apparently it's ok sing about hating some law abiding citizens expressing their rights to be inbred, yet any singing about a terrorist murdering group is offensive!?
Wtf?

Lyrics should be "f the c*ty and the Ashton 8" IMO. The Ashton Gate 8 were well and truly done over by the club at the time.

Didn’t hear it yesterday, is this working? Or have I just become deaf, tolerant or too easily engrossed by the sparkling entertainment on the pitch?! Crowd did seem quite flat
