I feel this could be a good appointment - it must say something about the club that he wants a permanent position beyond the ending of his playing career.

On my football manager save, I had a coach slot up for grabs. I offered it to the players and up steps George Friend. He already has gold credentials and is doing a good job so far.π

Another example of the board getting there moneys worth . A HZOR needed, they get a player to do it . Save some money, keeps george busy . Win win for club . Unless heβs no good at it!

At least he cant get injured doing this....or can he? You couldn't make it up, a player who seems to disappear with the slightest injury now gets rewarded with a senior role at the club. Just when you thought we couldn't employ somebody worse than TW to head up recruitment, we've managed to do it! And you know that how? Weβve been on about appointing a HoR and now we have. Heβs experienced at a good level and has played across the top leagues so letβs hope he can bring some kind of organisational skill to create a team of scouts that can tick another box about improving the football part of the club. Just as I see no reason not to give younger players a chance even though they lack experience, filling the post of HoR with a younger player whoβs just retired is similarly ok, especially given GFβs experience in the game. UTG! ps. Apologies to Henbury and Cheshireβ¦..you beat me to it with similar comments earlier than me. Not for the first time Iβm way behind in catching up on stuff! βΉοΈ And Cheshire you put it so much better than me.

But there again I guess every HoR has to start somewhere otherwise in 5/6 years time nobody would have had the experience to be an experienced HoR. Not a dig at you but if you have to start somewhere why not BRFC? Good luck George, if indeed it is true.π UTG!

We need a head of recruitment and who better than someone local, relevant, finger on the pulse and hungry to make it work.
Itβs a yes from me

Why's HoR different from any other job, why not appoint somebody who's done a few years of scouting or management etc, or working part time alongside a full time HoR. This is possibly now the most important role at any club, as there's little the manager can do if he hasn't got the right players to manage. After Derby headhunted their previous HoR Oxford appointed from within their analysis dept: www.oufc.co.uk/news/2023/march/ed-waldron-head-of-recruitment/#:~:text=Oxford%20United%20are%20delighted%20to,club's%20new%20Head%20of%20Recruitment. Barnsley's have just appointed this person in a similar role: www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2024/february/mladen-sormaz-appointed/So far I can't find one L1 club who just appointed a player with no experience as HoR.

Thatβs a fair enough view to hold Topper but again those people will have to started somewhere. And of course my reply to you was more about the bit I highlighted about you saying what you did about the comparison with TW, a tad disrespectful to both I think.
UTG!

Most HORs start in analysis and work their way forward.
Players work with and study data analysis everyday also (clue is the black crop top they wear under the shirts)so looking at and studying data is now part of every pro life.
It's a similar pathway of understanding and George also has a degree in media, owns 2 companies, as well as coaching a UEFA A licence. The bloke isn't daft.
As long as he doesn't sign players with the same sort of appearance record as him over the last 3 years we'll be ok!

See some are saying see who he signs. We have not seen the job spec so we don't know if he actually signs players or identifies players that meet the managers requirements. I suspect the latter. I assume any identified player has to fit the managers requirements and the clubs budget and that the player wants to join.

Topper, the point you re missing is its about hunger and desire to succeed, if you look at George, an intelligent man with lots of previous clubs and relevant contacts, having played in the Prem. It's not going to be all about him, it's a results business so let s give the guy a chance, and debate this in July when HMS P/## the L will be either sailing or we ll be chasing James Constable, playing golf with Norwood , or checking the time of Clive Platts train!

Happy to have George involved. Hope this becomes bigger than a 1 man operation.
I think an advantage of it being someone fresh out of football they should be relatively wired to present motivations of footballers.

George Friend Linkedin; My career in elite professional football, encompassing over 500 1st team games and spanning two decades, has provided me with many rewarding experiences and highlights, including three promotion-winning campaigns and a large number of personal accolades. It has also given me the opportunity to play under and learn from a host of successful and high-profile managers who have all helped shape my own football philosophies.
As I move into my mid-30s and the closing chapter of my playing career, I am now seeking to embark on new and exciting challenges within the football industry. I have a keen interest in many different aspects of the game, particularly recruitment and the management of player loans, and I have added to my bank of qualifications by recently attaining my UEFA A Licence in coaching as well as a Certificate in Football Marketing & Management.
The knowledge and expertise I have accumulated during my career, not only within football but also as owner and director of two successful business ventures, has equipped me with a strong and transferrable skillset. A media degree has enhanced my communication skills, I have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities as a club captain and my business interests have enabled me to become proficient in administrative tasks and financial planning.
My passion for football still burns as brightly as it did when I was a 17-year-old making my debut for Exeter City in 2005. I am proud of my record of having played at every level of English football β from the Conference to the Premier League β and I believe my enthusiasm, energy and strong work ethic helps generate a positive response from others.

My only concern is his other business interests and being pulled in several directions. Tisdale also had other business interests. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. As long as the club are satisfied he will give his time to his work with us then I'm OK with it.
