Before you all slate him does anyone here actually know what George Friends job description is? 🤔
Lenny gets all the plaudits for being a wise old head. Just remember he used his extensive contacts to sign players like Dominic Blizzard, Carl Regan and Mark Wright.

I can't understand how anybody with no coaching or managerial experience can become MT's immediate boss, HoR already seemed a big step up. As far as Spendlove I assumed he'd long departed, I thought he was taking the flack for EJ/BJ signing so many injury prone players and the fact we didn't seem to have any scouting network? I think if you take the trouble to view George's Linkedin page . You will find out that he is quite experienced with regards to these matters. What matters? When was he ever appointed as a coach or manager previously? His CV just states he has around 12 months experience in investments etc and longer in rental property development, whilst he's got coaching qualifications BG also had those but you wouldn't want him anywhere near a DoF role.

LL got us to two finals in the same season one leading to promotion then we had our best run for years in the FA Cup. The wheels fell off the wagon when he departed.

I was surprised when he was announced Director of Football, the leak on here and the radio was Head of Recruitment. I thought the same as you Topper, "When was he ever appointed as a coach or manager previously?". Then I started to look at Premiership teams. It seems the Director of Football has been removed from quite a few teams and replaced with Director of Sports. I looked at Liverpool and Chelsea. I wonder if our views of DoF and it used to be ex managers is an outdated view in the modern world?

So what do the people who were complaining about our poor recruitment set up and lack of a DOF think to these appointments, are they happy ?

I'll add David Pipe, Darryl Duffy and Andy Williams to the list of LL's 'impressive' signings.

As DoF is George Friend now effectively Matt Taylor's immediate boss? Depends on the hierarchy. Quite often the Direct of Football and First Team Coach will report directly to the CEO. Friend's role could be more around the structure of the football side of the business. Obviously he'll have a relationship with Taylor but also with the likes of Tom Short (Head of Medical), Byron Anthony (Academy Manager), Damien Broad (Head of Academy Coaching) and, hopefully in time Nathan Hallett-Young (Women's First Team Manager). My assumption is initially Taylor would have been involved in the recruitment process, however going forward Friend will be involved in the recruitment of managers etc.  There’s no reason for George to have anything to do with a ladies team that isn’t owned or ran by his employer.

That’s why I said hopefully. Had Wael stuck to another one of his promises the Community Department wouldn’t have had to start a women’s team.

In one way its a shame Friend wont get one final game before retiring. When fit he was still a decent player. Maybe he wouldn't have been able to come back again this season anyway? In another way, him retiring immediately and getting straight to work as DoF can only be a good thing.

Last game he came on he struggled after coming back from an injury and was off the pitch within 30 mins. There’s obviously something niggiling which they decided wasn’t worth trying to work around any longer.

Well look at it this way - at least it’s another one off the playing budget. I would imagine staff are paid for from a different budget to the players.

Directors of football do not get involved in coaching, that’s the manager and his staff, he will look after the business side, contracts budgets, recruitment etc.

Bit better than Andy Spring though.

Totally wrong ! I was very open ‘to being impressed ‘ by Matt Taylor mentioned it several times in posts but personally I wasn’t impressed by the way he behaved after the Stevenage match plus I do find him a bit robotic as a ‘personality’ ! however no one can judge him football wise until he has his own team in place all on nxt season now! 💙utg
