Spoke to some Sheffield Wednesday fans a couple of seasons ago. They preferred fighting for winning something rather than just try and survive the premiership. Saw something a few days ago that concluded that in recent times the 82ers were the most boring team to watch as they just weren't involved in any end of season deciders. Kids there haven't experienced the ups and downs. The last few games I've understood what that's like. Granted, a division lower

Remember all the funny videos they produced back then too. I remember jack gosling getting plaudits for becoming Gibraltars record goal scorer. We won in the last minute at Mansfield with a Snakey header.Goz came on as sub and beat 89 defenders with a mazy run.Jermaine Easter was sent off and our goalie dived three minutes after the ball hit the net for their goal.An ex City player,Nicky Hunt, was constantly fouling off the ball but was eventually sent off. We had an 8' 12" Dutch goalie too who used to do a spectacular drive after the ball had hit the back of the net.Jordi Van Stapperhoef or something.

Bristol Rovers should never have dropped out of the Football League, it's a stain on the history of our club. When the club had been in danger of being relegated earlier in the century the board moved to prevent it. The complacency of the regime who were obsessed with beating Sainsburys was breath taking "we didn't plan for relegation" said the director of finance.... Kind regards John Malyckyj Not sure about being a stain but it certainly should not have happened ! complacency all round from team and fans who thought job was done after winning at Wycombe, as for the board well you are right, it was laughable listening to how we were going to put Sainsburys in their place by spending goodness knows how much on appeals!

Great season for winning games and the promotion at the end , depressing seeing 25 away fans in the away end at matches !

Personally I couldnt stand it. As regards the Wembley play off final, it seemed like everything had been put on red and everything hung on the result of that game. We were very lucky indeed. Totally where I am with it. The season after was a million times better imho.

Kind regards John Malyckyj Of course you’re correct about going out of the league but as fans we're helpless to affect major club decisions and in the end have to deal with the consequences of other peoples’ decisions. Unfortunately the consequence of the decisions (failure to recruit a striker the summer before, poor decisions regarding Elliot R / Alan Gow transfer in January, even the rubbish surrounding JJOT just before Easter) led to what happened. The following two seasons redeemed the situation even if we were left with the stigma of being non-league albeit for one season. DC and the players …..👏👏👏👏. UTG!

Let us not forget fans trying to board coaches to get at the players at Altrincham and trying to attack opposition players at Braintree….

It was good fun for a year but I suspect the novelty would have worn off pretty rapidly and within a couple of seasons we would have been playing in front of 5,000 or less.

In answer to the OP I have found many things in our clubs recent history much more embarrassing than going non-league.
We were dire the year we went down and absolutely deserved to be relegated.
I seldom get embarrassed by football results, let's face it, we are Rovers fans not Man City supporters.
I enjoyed every bit of DCs time with us. Without relegation, none of what came after would have happened.

Yes but clubs can always get back, even after a prolonged spell in the NL. Chesterfield have just stormed it after several years with crowds of 10,000, and let's never forget Luton. A lot of people have said it would have been the death of the club if we had lingered down there, but there's always a way back up, and with crowds of 5,000 on a much much lower playing budget we would have come good eventually. Well I think so anyway.

I agree, clubs with fairly good support (regular 4k plus) will always get back up eventually, for us that season and many more clubs before and after that it has proved a reboot. I wasn’t devastated when we went down, in fact I was more disappointed when we lost our record of never playing in the Football League bottom division. Let’s hope one day we break our record of never being in the Top Division!! 🤞🏾

Without that season we’d have missed out on seeing Gas legends like Adam Cunnington, Bradley Goldberg and Anthony Wall gracing the Mem

It’s not a stain on our history.
With the exception of the elite no club is too big to drop down to a level they’ve never been at.
What followed was 3 thoroughly great seasons. Would do it all again.

Biggest moment was when Alfreton visited us.An elderly fan became very emotional and said,'I have never dreamt we'd be playing Big teams like this'.

Now that it’s well and truly in the rear view can anybody else look back on this season and smile? It was the year I felt like I got my Rovers back. I enjoyed visiting new grounds. I enjoyed actually winning some games and having something to play for. Looking back most of the squad were proper likeable people too. DC lead locks, Mildenhall, Harrison, Monkhouse, Gaffney, Lines, Snake (at the time) and Blissett. We all formed bonds with this team. People got the squad tattooed on them. And of course Puddymania was sweeping the terraces with renditions of “I wanna dance with Will Puddy”. I have to admit I love everything about that season apart from the Wembley final which was boring and tense. Can anyone else just admit they’re no longer embarrassed and actually enjoyed being in the conference? I enjoyed it a long time ago tbh. From the moment DC did that outstanding interview before the season started, there was a minor wobble at the start of the season but other than that I loved it. Possibly my favourite season ever, which is amazing really.

It would be fair to say my love of the Rovers was well and truly rekindled that season.Loads of great memories but the best for me was the beautiful sunny day we won 3-0 at Kidderminster. 3 second half goals and I swear Kidderminster only got out of their own half about twice in the whole of that second period, never seen a game like it and made all the better with gas on 3 sides of the ground.Happy days!

Without that season we’d have missed out on seeing Gas legends like Adam Cunnington, Bradley Goldberg and Anthony Wall gracing the Mem I strangely enjoyed the conference season, even with the football elite masters you’ve mentioned above. I think I just got used to winning after the initial wobble. Having said that, was very relieved when Manse slotted that pen, in my 50 odd years of supporting, it’s still in my opinion the most important ‘goal’ in our history by a million miles.

However the relief when manse slotted that pen in my opinion is & will remain the most important moment in gas history.
