Alex Ferguson - Manchester Utd - the club that decided not to compete in the FA Cup and took part in the World Club Championship instead! They were under pressure from the FA, due to England's forthcoming bid to host the 2006 World Cup. "Ferguson, a proud Scot, even cited England's World Cup bid among his reasons to chose the FIFA tournament instead of the oldest cup competition in the world, yet he reportedly reached out to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair in a private phonecall to try to persuade the government to allow United to play in the FA Cup instead. It's clear Ferguson was under pressure to prioritise the FIFA tournament."

All EFL clubs should boycott the competition unless reversed. This is a ad-hock decision to pander to the premiership

It is a simple case of when they sell the TV rights to their plastic competitions they can say there won't be any FA cup games on TV to compete. Obviously if the Champions league etc is so brilliant they would not be scared of BBC or ITV showing Rovers playing a non league team.

If the clubs won’t boycott, perhaps us fans should.

Bristol Rovers FC are extremely disappointed in the Football Association’s decision to axe FA Cup replays from the 2024/25 season. Replays have long formed a traditional and exciting aspect of the FA Cup, the longest-serving cup competition in world football, and provide the greatest opportunity for many EFL clubs to create treasured memories for supporters. Bristol Rovers’ own FA Cup third-round replay at The Memorial Stadium, against Sky Bet Championship side Norwich City, attracted an attendance of over 10,000 fans for a midweek evening fixture in January and provided a valuable and important income for the Club. We are frustrated and dismayed at the lack of consultation regarding the matter, which has seemingly been the case across the EFL, and stand firm in our belief that such fundamental changes to a competition involving Bristol Rovers should not be made without at the very least including the Club in the discussion. Rovers, in full solidarity with other EFL teams, now calls on the FA to suspend their decision to make changes to the FA Cup and undertake a full and transparent consultation process with all shareholders. It seems all lower pyramid clubs ie outside the top 44 odd were not aware of the decision. In the 3rd round many Prem and championship clubs put out a joke X1 anyway. Hopefully there is a suspension or at least a compromise to have the replays in place to at least round 4. Makes the Prem look like school ground bullys.

Is it loss of tradition or potential loss of revenue for lower league sides which is the main issue? I don’t quite get the revenue argument - to get a big payday away at Man U for example you’ve got to get through several rounds first and then hope you win the raffle, sorry get drawn out of the velvet bag. If a league two club is on the brink of going bust the whole future could rely on who they draw in the cup - get Man U away and they survive, get Crawley at home and they go bust.
I believe gate receipts get split equally between home and away sides in the fa cup? Instead could gate receipts from all of the ties get equally shared between all clubs that participated in that round - that way all clubs get financial benefit not just those who get a lucky break in the draw.
I’m not sure how FA Cup prize money is distributed but if it increases round by round that just makes the richer clubs richer as it’s generally the bigger clubs who get to the latter stages. Instead could the prize money be equal for every round?

If the clubs won’t boycott, perhaps us fans should. It'll only be fans of the small clubs that boycott. So it will go completely unnoticed by the decision makers - and will reduce the smaller clubs' revenue even further

Pathetic really. The revamp of the new UEFA competitions means how many more teams in the Prem play in Europe? 1? We're going to revamp the whole thing because of 1 team?
I just checked too, Villa will play 56 games this season. We will play 55.
We're also mandated to play full strength teams in cup competitions, which they're not...
Absolute joke. The FA are a disgrace.

Interesting comments by Hereford today, if there had been no replays in the past, they would have never played and beaten Newcastle in one of the most famous giant killing matchesm

Plus, they may make the playoffs yet!!!

I've got a solution. Replays stay, If a team wants to forfeit they can. They pay the opposition the equivalent of 2x match day revenue from an home sell out and the opposition proceed to the next round. History books will show the forfeiting team lost the replay 8-0 and the owners wet the bed until they were 25

too many games for the big clubs !! The premiership finishes on May 19th then Spurs and Newcastle fly all the way to Australia to play each other on the 22nd in a friendly, but that’s ok, makes more money then a cup replay on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke. Greedy bar stewards the lot of them.
