Sam Smith signed a 3 year contract in July 2023, when he returned to the Club. It will cost us money to get him. On about £6k per week at Reading. We won't be paying that sort of money. I can see us paying 4-5k a week and if offered a 3 yr deal he might be tempted. Remember Reading are cash strapped so he’s unlikely to get a contract renewal on the same terms there .

Let's hope Mola adds some bite to our defence If he lives up to his name I’m sure he will add some bite.

I wonder if Reading let him leave as they are in such a dire financial state, rather than not being good enough to warrant a new contract offer? I think there could be some truth in this as he was on £3400 a week at Reading, Still concerns me that though that if reading are willing to release him why would we offer 3 year deal. Could be another player on a longish term contract that is bang average and that is on a decent wage too! If Reading are cash strapped perhaps they had to release him? Clearly somebody at Rovers feels he's worth a 3 year deal and it's their problem not ours if he's a flop.

No one wants to sign for Bristol Rovers because the whole world thinks Matt Taylor is boring.
Or something.....

A benefit about signing these players on longer term contracts means we don’t get that ridiculous state of having to rebuild the whole side again every season as we did under Joey. We have continuity and can look forward to tweaks to build on towards achieving the next stage as opposed to having to start all over again from ground zero

Still, I'm sure the anti Taylor brigade would have been happier if no one wanted to join us as it fits their narrative. It may not work, but for years many have been saying we should be looking for younger players with potential. Finally we have a management team that are doing it. I would expect 1 or 2 experienced players to join later in the window too.

I am cautious of the Garner season where we took a similar direction and ended up with several players not really good enough.
We'll still need experience throughout the squad. Really hoping Ward can play 30+ this season.

Really hoping Ward can play 30+ this season. The difference is this time we are signing players with games, goals and assists under their belt and still at a good age.

You just have to hope we've done our homework on these players and that they will perform for the entire length of their contracts.

We're also clearly spending more money, the BG/TW model always seemed a very cheap option.

There are differences in that Ben Garner did not have any experienced players as they were all freed - the likes of Tony Craig etc. We will still have Hunt and Wilson in defence, Ward in midfield and Martin/ Sinclair up front . Add to that - Thomas is not a novice and we have Mc Cormack and jevani Brown who should be able to add some experience and we should be ok.

On the flip side of the flip side you are guaranteed that a player the wrong side of 30 is worth nothing in 2 years. At least with youth you have the chance that one or two may make us money. Even if none of them do we are no worse off are we?
