One of our finest, cruelly lost to cancer 40 years ago today.
My favourite player from my youth, I used to stand right at the front just to see him turn fullbacks inside out.

A wonderfully talented football, who was destined for a higher level.
A massive shock to us all when he passed away.
Along with Jamie Shore and Marcus Stewart, he was in my top 3 Rovers players in my 60 years of watching.

A huge shock, he struggled with pre-season, subsequently diagnosed with cancer and gone in just a couple of weeks. His run's down the wing, especially at Eastville a thing to behold.

I only have a few memories of our Eastville days. Mickey being more than one of them. Used to live a street away in Yate. Remember the sad news so well and I was 10 at the time.

Will never forget a wet and horrible night at Newport when he ripped them apart in the last few minutes of the game

Can we somehow lobby the club to call the new South Stand....The Michael Barrett Memorial Stand?

Can we lobby the club to rename the South Stand "The Michael Barrett Memorial Stand"
It's very fitting imo

Superb winger following the likes of Harold Jarman, Ray Graydon and Kenny Stephens - what great wingers we had in those halcyon days at Eastville

As per my previous post I have limited memories. Header against Millwall towards end of season. 2 late goals won the game, must have been an important game if I can remember it. Don't think anyone he got past stayed on their feet. Just left them lying there thinking WTF

Oh Mickey you're so fine ...
Heartbreak in 1984, fondly remembered to this day. I remember his last goal, v Millwall, his header sparked a mini pitch invasion bringing on the police horses aimed for the away end. ....and kept alive our 3rd place promotion prospects to last away match.
Inspiring, exciting and a brilliant prodigy....we were heartbroken and definitely should be something to put his name too officially.

I remember playing against a young Mickey Barrett on a few occasions when he was playing for Shirehampton Sports - an undoubted talent. I think Johnny Watkins (ex Rovers) was manager of Shirehampton at the time.

He scored in his very last match at Eastville. What a night that was with Mickey scoring the winning goal.

He scored in his very last match at Eastville. What a night that was with Mickey scoring the winning goal. A pitch invasion and horses on thd pitch. In hindsight a proper send off.

I`ll never forget the goal he scored away at Plough Lane in a 1-1 draw with Wimbledon. He made it all look so easy. Naming the south stand after him? Brilliant suggestion.

And there's the game as per my previous comment. Explains why I remember bits of it. Just had a youtube search 'Bristol Rovers 1983' a couple of Mickey's goals there

Being a survivor of cancer myself I will never forget or forgive the City fans with their vile and disgusting chants at Ashton Gate the first time we played there following the death of Mickey Barrett.

Being a survivor of cancer myself I will never forget or forgive the City fans with their vile and disgusting chants at Ashton Gate the first time we played there following the death of Mickey Barrett. It's always nice to hear of success stories in the battle against cancer.. I remember those vile chants too, they've always stuck with me. For balance and back in the day our fans sang some pretty vile chants about Harry Dolman when he passed. Not great back then ...

When I first started work ,I was an apprentice on Bristol Parks dept at Canford park. Micky Barrett and Gary Mabbutt used to come down and play tennis in the park on hot sunny days in the summer. Two of the most talented (and fit)players to wear the quarters while I have been supporting the club. Gary went onto to play in the top flight and for England I think Mickey also had the talent to play in the top flight, but was taken down by a horrible disease.life can be so cruel sometimes, Mickey Barrett Was a top quality player.
