But nor could a lot of bands once they started playing in the studios, even zep couldn't play a lot of their stuff live as it sounded on the albums, you could argue that zep were the original supergroup, dependent on which history you believe in. But i've yet to hear a band that was that tight musically since, loved the way people jumped on that and decided that some sold their souls to the devil, nah they were born to play together Interestingly years back Radio ran a poll to find the ultimate musicians which would in theory create the best band in the world, any one could vote for anyone , the winners were lead jimmy page bass john paul jones drums john bonham vocals yes you guessed robert plant. What were the odds of that I would have Entwistle on bass ahead of Jones. Plant is a terrific vocalist but I think there have been better. When it comes to The Beatles a great quote from Pete Townshend in the mid 60s."I was listening to The Beatles earlier in stereo where we could hear the backing track coming out of one speaker and their voices the other" "when you listen to The Beatles without their voices they are flipping lousy". Townsend probably had half a kilo of powder up his face.

Now this is my kind of thread.
Sex Pistols are puerile w**k. Ramones invented punk. Sex Pistols went to see Ramones a year before they were formed and were sh** scared of them because they thought they were a biker gang.
The Velvet Underground sounds like four people playing their instruments for the first time.
Radiohead are Coldplay for art students.
The Killers / Kings of Leon / Mumford and Sons. No explanation needed.

I was born in Downend but I'm not always singing songs about the place. I've moved on.
Get over it Bruce.
Anyway, onwards and upwards.
Frank Sinatra.
Sings out of tune half the time. He does. It's a fact.

Bloody hell so was I - true. Spooky.
Was your Mum by any chance a Samba dancer from Brazil who married a plumber from Kingswood, who then left him and had a one nighter with a mortgage advisor from Staple Hill?
If so, we could be half-brothers!

HaHAHA took you yonks to find it have you got a source to the pistols ramones thing you mention, as thats almost exactly what jello biafra said about the ramones, I love the ramones but never would have sais they were pure punk more pop punk, the time lines dont add up ramones formed 74 (first uk appearance 76), rotten auditioned for the pistols in 75. Dont forget cock sparrer (formed as cock sparrow)been around since 74 so can claim to be the longest running punk band. i never got interested in american punk until the dead kennedys formed, till then american punk was too soft, so for me punk was an english thing as it was more personal in the uk due to the political climate, people think we haver it bad these days ) Although it depends how individually define punk,

MC5 in 1969 are usually credited as the inspration for it all. Fast, loud and aggressive but no long boring drum or guitar solos. These recent posts should be on Underated bands, not this, but hey ho.

All these football threads are way too stressful.
It was in a book I own, I'll try and dig it out later.
To me punk at it's core is simply pop music played quickly through distorted amplifiers but as you rightly say, it's different for everyone.
I wouldn't want to deny the Pistol's their important role in shaping the British scene but they still sound like dog sh** to me and I'm not impressed by 40 years of Lyndon being a stroppy Noel Gallagher-esque character coasting off the fact that he said a rude word on telly once and sh**ting over anyone who dared to write music after him.
Tbh I've never been impressed by the "uber punx look at me I have such an unholy amount of misdirected anger just look at my safety pins" kind of punk, which seems to be all the UK was capable of creating. All my favourite punk bands seem to be American; Hüsker Dü, Jawbreaker, The Replacements, Descendents, Dillinger Four, F*cked Up, Andrew Jackson Jihad - all made/make music that's actually fun to listen to and made great social commentary whilst avoiding all those clichés and often looking more like office temp workers than circus freaks.
I think you're totally right about being there at the time, it's definitely an era thing. Green Day, Lagwagon, Alkaline Trio being gateway bands for me as a teenager.
I've never heard of Main Sail Sparrer, will have to check them out.
One English band I do really like is Caves, who are from Bristol.

How are we having a discussion about punk without mentioning The Clash.
Best band ever, never mind best punk band.
