Nope, totally disagree. Even if a pitch is prepared for the home team then they only have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. England play India at home, what sort of pitch is the groundsman going to make, a seamer friendly green pitch, or a flat dust-bed? Who's at home? Either way the toss is important....

MMmmm, might be a bit difficult preparing a flat dust bed in England. England have better swing/seam bowlers than most because the players grow up playing in those conditions, in the same way teams on the sub-continent have better spinners because their conditions suit spin bowlers. You cannot change weather/geographical conditions! Surely, one of the great skills is being able to adapt the way you play to suit local conditions, either as a batsman or a bowler?

Anyone expecting another four-day bore-fest before the current test sparks into life around lunchtime on Monday?

That's the point, bowl last means bat first. The home groundsman wouldn't make it so batsman friendly. Nope, totally disagree. Even if a pitch is prepared for the home team then they only have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. As of next season in the county championship. Before the toss, the visiting captain will be offered the opportunity of bowling first. If he declines, the toss will take place as normal. But if he accepts, there will be no toss.

Ever since I read about this plan I've been a bit confused. Are 'we' trying to make most counties produce 'perfect' batting pitches? In which case most 4-day games will be a draw and the few remaining people who actually go to watch four-day cricket will soon find something better to do... I think it would be better to just 'rig' the toss a bit - 66% chance of the away team winning it seems to me to be a more interesting way to do things...

So, next England opener given Alex Hales missed his golden chance...?

So, next England opener given Alex Hales missed his golden chance...? I still think that as Hales is a front-front player, he'd struggle against the SA pace attack.

Thought Finn & Ali were excellent. With Steyn a major doubt for Saturday England have a great chance of going 2 up. Just have to keep De Villiers quiet though. The best batsman in the world is bound to click soon, just hope the series is over before he does. Now on to the most picturest ground in the World, Newlands.

Totally forgot about Jimmy, apparently he could have played this test but the management didn't want to take any risks. Now after a performance like this the question has to be asked, who makes way for him? It's going to be hard on whoever gets the chop. I think it'll be Woakes

What was just as pleasing was that we won test without any significant contribution from Captain Cook.

We have got to build on this now and make a good start on day one. Confidence is riding high in the team atm and SA are there for the taking.

I agree, South Africa are defiantly there for the taking if this week is to go by. A couple of good sessions like we had against the Aussie's and we could find ourselves unable to lose the series very quickly. Trouble is though is our away form, think it's 2 wins in about 9 games, got to do better away from home if we really want that top test spot.

I think the current test ranking system means there's no point aiming to be 'top' - in the long form of the game the last 3-4 years make up your points score...and the maths to work out what each result is worth make the Scottish Premiership table look simple....we should beat the 'so-called' top Test team in this series and be happy with a job well done... BTW, could one of the mods (maybe Russgas) change the title of this thread to something more suitable like 'Cricket' as we're now two series past the original third test it was referencing....

Leave it alone. Why do people constantly ask for threads to be changed or deleted?.

Incredible day yesterday. In work now, and I've just tried explaining to my German colleagues what happened.......They just looked at me as though I was talking Serbo/Croat with a lisp and a stutter ! Think I'll pop down the corridor to the 'Indian Office', at least they will know what I'm talking about !
