Following some excellent views from the gasheads I have needed to amend the goals below. When we were at the bottom of division two all those years ago I decided to set about thinking differently about what would be our targets for the season. Amazingly, JW had an immediate impact on our fortunes and we won so many games our fears of relegation were put behind us. As many will know we never really had a realistic hope of clinching a play off place that season but it was fun seeing if we could. The history of ground-breaking goals season by season was: 2012/2013 – Achieved stretching goal of mid table – unbelievable at one point. 2013/2014 – Less said the better! 2014/2015 – Achieved ground breaking goal of promotion – happy days! So what can we hope for in season 2015/2016. We have made a great start. One of our best starts I can remember for many years. Like many of you I remain optimistic about our chances this season. My optimism has increased following the recent results and have confidence that we can have another season that we can proudly shout about. Onto the goals for end of season. SECURITY GOAL Comfortable mid table – say 12th. Disappointing final position. Any less would be seen as failure in my eyes. If we do finish 12th it will give us a springboard to attack the top positions the season after. REALISTIC GOAL Play Offs. This is clearly in the minds of the manager and many on this forum. We are Bristol Rovers and it is good to see that we have a manager that aims high and sets publically what he considers is possible. Many will see this as realistic and certainly achievable. STRETCHING GOAL Promotion via the play offs. We have the experience of winning play off finals. If we get to the play offs we would fancy our chances against any of the teams around us. Quite a few fans are probably dreaming of this. It’s a great day out and all the better when we win. Back to back promotions through the play offs would be impressive. Certainly we might think that it is possible. For many this would be ground-breaking. SUPER STRETCHING GOAL Promotion via 2nd or 3rd place. This looks the most likely as of today. GROUND-BREAKING GOAL Obtaining the top spot. Right now we are on a high. When we beat Orient our expectations will be rising uncontrollably high. We will still be in August and there is a long way to go, some will say. We need to see where we are after Christmas, some will say. Take each game one step at a time, some will say. Some will say, let’s do groups of six games and see where we are – a series of mini leagues if you like. Good strategy and good tactics will be important for sure. Do well and the Ground-Breaking Goal will be in sight come March 2016. WHAT DO I THINK? As some can imagine, I would hope for a ground breaking finish. I’m certain that we will get to the play offs. I would like to wait a little longer before I confidently predict a finish. That, however, is not what this thread is about. Right now, I am in the mythical bus, picking up passengers and expecting promotion. Could it be by avoiding the playoffs. I certainly think so. Putting my neck on the line, I’m expecting us to win the league but will be satisfied with back to back promotions through the play offs. I think many will agree. It's a bit of fun, but right now it’s a bit lonely on the mythical bus! Think it's a bit too early to be saying that. Let's just calm down a bit for now shall we?

We should all know by now, getting over excited early does not really work for us. Lets keep our feet on the ground and see where we are in a couple of months. UTG.

We'll finish top, so I'm sat upstairs, on the big seat at the front of the bus (the old 'uns will know what seat I'm talking about). Better tell Rich to watch out for low bridges!

Since the game on Saturday I've been thinking about the management of our football team. I think, along with many others, Darrell has done a fantastic job building the confidence of the players and the fans.
I want to talk about his impact on the team and the individuals in it. When he took over the team we had some players who had low ambition and were not anxious about their performance. It short - I'm not sure they cared enough about this football club. They were not hungry for success. What we have now are ambitious players with low performance anxiety. Relaxed players have inner security and confidence knowing they can rely on one another to succeed. These sorts of players are exactly what you need to win this league. Darrel has many of these and we are in good hands. We are performing and we are ambitious. Exciting times ahead!
To explain my thoughts a bit further. In dressing rooms across the country teams will have 4 types of players:
Player one - not afraid to fail High ambition and low anxiety. Dare to excel when it really matters; they maintain self belief and levels of performance when facing setbacks. They have inner security and confidence. These are good at taking penalties. The very best are in this category.
Player two - afraid of making mistakes High ambition and high anxiety. Breaks and accelerates at the same time although have great drive and ambition; they can create performance anxiety in others and this spreads like wildfire. These players are OK as long as all us going well. wants to take penalties but would then worry about failing. Lots of players can be in this area. Great management helps build their confidence.
Player three - also afraid of making mistakes Low ambition and high anxiety. They use energy not to make mistakes. Prevents mistakes rather than take risks to succeed. Lots of sideways passing. Would hide when manager asks for any penalty takers.
Player four - these are not bothered about failing Low ambition and low anxiety. They achieve very little and generate little energy. Completely useless in the dressing room and on the pitch. Bad news if on long contracts.
Great leadership by our manager has developed a confidence throughout the team with many of our team having high ambition for our club and are willing to try things to enable us to win matches. Great stuff Darrell and coaching team. Our club is now back with lots of players being one and two above.
We now need to excel when it really matters. Saturday will help to cement my thinking that we are going places. If we mean business then a good result at Orient will help us gain confidence on the terraces. I feel good about us winning. Our away form is so impressive. 2-0 would do nicely.

This is where I struggle with this concept looking at the above Player one is not afraid to fail, but player four is not bothered about failing is that not the same? player two afraid of making mistakes as is player three both have anxiety which I can't see as a good thing in any situation. I always thought that fear of failure was what drove people to achieve and being afraid of making mistakes helped you not to make them I think it might take a few more beer stops for me to properly get into this

I might need a few beers myself. The difference is that player four is not ambitious and so aims low. I agree anxiety is not in any situation but player two at least has ambition. A good manager and coach will work on the anxiety so that player two can succeed. I reckon this is where most coaches do most of their work. If they succeed you get a player one. Player three and four aren't ambitious enough for real winners. Too right some are motivated by fear of failure. Probably many. The very best probably don't think about failure. They take risks because they are confident. Really confident footballers and sports stars think about winning and probably don't think of failing. I think fear of failure stops you aiming high.

The key above is performance (anxious or not) vs ambition ( low or high). The very best relax and are highly ambitious. All winners have this trait.

I will never forget how Ward said "The fans deserve to have some excitement" when we were knocking on the door of the playoffs. We plummeted to the Conference almost instantly.

So we lost today. Some say that is a defeat. I say it is a victory. We are on target for achieving a stretching goal.
Can we do it? I say we can. Losing teams win their next match, if they are to be winners who don't lose. Are we losers who fail to win after losing?
Some say we are. I say we might not be.
I am ready for the bus. It has lost a match but it has won the war. Winners win the war. Losers lose them.
Many disagree with me, but one thing is certain. Only losers admit defeat. Winners ignore it and look forward to the next defeat, or win. Either will be groundbreaking. I think DC feels this way, and he will have told the players this. Winners do, And losers.

Good thing this season (so far) we are either winning or losing. No draws. Points work out better that way.
