Cambridge may not want him but after spending £200,000 on him they ain't gonna let him go for nothing. As regards a loan what is the point from our side as he will only be able to stay for 2 months and if we are serious about promotion he will be gone at a vital time. The fear is Cambridge want a fee for him that we can't pay. Saying that £200k isn't a lot for what he offers the team! Working in our favour is that Cambridge want rid so we might be able to get him a lot cheaper than that.

(he does have a degree in Accountancy as well). Yeah, but you shouldn't hold that against him.

Not doubting you Steve but I didn't realise Cambridge paid 200k for Gaffney. Where did you read that?

Cash + blisset to Cambridge? We get a decent striker and they keep their squad depth We shouldn't be paying any cash for him. It's clear Cambridge don't want him and would like to free up his wage. Should be a free transfer. Plus, who in their right mind will take blisset. He's failed at every club we've loaned him to in the conference. hahhaaha yeah bet they really want bliss

200k is loads for a club in our financial position but a promotion would net far more.
The balancing act of football, I want him obviously but if it's big money then we could do better raising another Taylor/Sinclair/leadbitter out of non league.
We did it before for years, Pritchard, Hayles etc....saying that though we paid for beadle, Cureton etc. At least with Gaffney you know he fits the team.

I agree with you. The original Beeb article states he joined them on a free. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30196678He's not wanted by Derry who has identified other players he wants and their chairman has indicated a deal is on. Think 200k would be way too much in these circumstances and I would expect it to be an 'undisclosed fee' if any which we will never know.

200k would have been a lot for Cambridge too given he'd played less that 20 games for Limerick? Not sure where it came from but sounds a bit wide of the mark to me

Oh let's just sign him. I've never been a "Higgs get your cheque book out" kind of chap, but this guy, we got to keep him.

Actually transfer market says he played a lot more. But still no sign of a fee. Anyway, he's a gas head now so who cares!

Surprised we haven't sang, " Rory Rory Bristol Rovers and the gas go marching on on on!"
Like others where the 200 k comes from I don't know, surely their local rag would have mentioned that, it sounds like they just want him off their wage bill, so let's get it tied up ASAP.

I think that's two who have quoted £200k with no real evidence, I can't see it being true. Could Cambridge even afford that?!
If you look at players who have come out of the Irish League, its not a particularly rich league and they tend to go for very small transfer fees, if they even go for a fee.
Shane Long for example went for about £30k to Reading from Cork, Kevin Doyle made the same move for £75,000. And they're two huge internationals for the ROI. So I can't see Gaffney going to Cambridge for the same sort of fee.
At lower end of the FL (Eunan O'Kane to Torquay, Michael Smith to us) it tends to be an 'end of contract' job, and I'd be surprised if it was anything other than that for Gaffney.

Come on then £200,000 people....where did you get that from? SteveK? I think Steve K has made a mistake with that tbf. Gaffney signed an 18 month contract with Cambridge on the 1st of jan 2015,but it appears there was no fee involved. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30196678Cambridge United have confirmed that Limerick striker Rory Gaffney will join the club at the beginning of the January window on a free transfer.
The 25-year-old, who has signed a deal until 2016, joined the League of Ireland side from Mervue United. He was the club's top scorer with 14 last term and finished the season with a run of 11 goals in 12 games.

To be fair to him that fee was quoted earlier on as well in a different thread I think. As you say I think it was a freebie. But even if a fee was involved it'll be nowhere near that high.

Just found out and posted on the other thread that because of the way Irish League contracts work, its almost certain Gaffney signed for Cambridge on a free.
Season runs March till October, contracts end in January. Oxford signed Patrick Hoban (the top scorer in 2014) on a free at pretty much the same time as Cambridge signed Gaffney.
Hopefully clarifies things a bit.
