My apologies if the figure I have quoted is wrong but was sure somebody either told me that or I read it somewhere. Great if it is incorrect.

Just listened to DC's post Orient match interview again and he was uncharacteristically open about his desire to keep Gaffney. Does make me feel deal may be done as I'd have thought he'd of played it a bit more cool were he not super confident. Cambridge press report similar. So regardless of price and haggling, I do think it may be a done deal. Happy days, I hope!

Just me, or did those 2 he stuck away yesterday have a hint of Richard Walker about them? They did,but when he is running he reminds me of a ginger Archie Stephens and I mean his hair colour of course

Stewart Barrowclough was our record signing between 1978 and 1991 at £100,000 then we signed Justin Skinner for £130,000 and later Paul Hardyman for £160,000 IIRC.
Tilson signed in 1992 for £370,000 along with Gary Waddock for £100,000 and Justin Channing on loan. Channing later signed for £275,000 but for me was never the same player once we signed him permanently.
We've had a few since around the £200,000-250,000 mark but nothing to match Tilson. Well worth the money in my opinion although his debut was not promising 5-0 at Wolves if I remember.

I liked Waddock - I thought he had a bit of class but you have to question spending £100,000 on a 30 year old. Tillson gave us excellent service so can't really grumble about that fee, even though it was very high. Channing was OK but nothing special. £750,000 spent over a few months says a lot for the board's ambition at the time. Especially as we were at Twerton. In retrospect it was kind of inevitable our stay in the second tier wouldn't be long given our resources and lack of ground, but it was great that the board had a real try at keeping us up there.

We will find out in the new year when Sir Geoffrey publishes his book.

Those together with Lambert make excellent signings perhaps GD was a far more shrewd operator than people give him credit for, together with the fact he sold Yates to QPR at the same time for 750.000 so got 3 players for 1 with no cash outlay

Terrace rumour was that he was a Gerry Francis signing when GD asked for help. A QPR friend at the time couldn't believe he was sold and so "cheaply".

The BEP ran a story that Big Mal was after Thomas Brolin for £400,000. Nice to have had some money then! Things went downhill shortly afterwards and he left but that City match and Aston Villa away in the Cup still brings back good memories.
