Reading between the lines, Cambridge have tried to put the squeeze on us at the 11th hour (which of course they are fully entitled to do, as frustrating as it is). I expect DC's comments were in-line with what we've gone back to Cambridge and said; i.e. this is the best we can offer (regardless of how accurate that is). I believe we are in the middle of a poker hand and it will be a case of which side blinks first. I believe Gaffney will be ours; the question is how much it will cost us to make that a reality. "Speculate to accumulate?" not many players in the lower divisions are worthy of a fee - this red haired little hotshot is in my opinion because in the short time he's been here he's shown he's a "Clarkey" type of player both hardworking and talented and in my opinion worth pushing the boat out for and his signing could pay for itself both in results and attendances- UTG

I thought the usual line was that if we get big crowds, that money can go on players. Another 9000+ today, so sign him up!

Would really like us to sign Gaffney, but if the money is not there we are going to have to do without him.

My assumption would be that we wanted a loan deal until the end of the season and Cambridge have probably said something along the lines of if you want him buy him ! but just an opinion

We have no money thats pretty clear. We should look at alternative fundraising options to keep him.
E.g Fans forum sponsor thingy or crowdfunding

DC has stated on Twentyman a deal was agreed for him to stay for the rest of the season and he told Gafney this but now Cambridge have moved the goalpost - Gafney has also said he is expected back for training at Cambridge Monday. He didn't clarify what the moving of the goalposts was but did state they had no money so I suspect they put a price on him. if you listened to the guy asking the questions, dc said it was very much a done deal 7 days ago bar the hand shake. but Cambridge have now decided to move the goal posts....he then asked dc whether that deal was a permanent deal or another loan deal. to which dc replied permanent. so im guessing there is money available, but Cambridge are now wanting more?

If we don't get him, and that's because 'we have no money' then we really must acknowledge that we are in a perilous financial position. Hope not.

I'm guessing we agreed to take over the last 6 months of his contract which was agreed but Gaffney popped up with his 2 goals last week and so Cambridge now want a fee? What we need now his for Gaffney to go back to Cambridge and say he'll just see out his contract if they don't let him leave. Although today's 2 goals probably haven't helped matters!

If gaffney wants to come they have nothing to gain by keeping him against his wishes, wages down the drain, unless they want to play him of course, but there's no guarantee the form he's found with us will be replicated in their side.

Only thing is, even if he does only warm their bench for the rest of the season, it is stopping a playoff rival having a good striker. Cambridge are only 3 points off the playoffs so may not want to be helping us.

They know we know that they don't really want him, but they'll try to pretend that they do now really want him, while we know they know that we really want him, though we'll have to pretend we don't really want him. They'll think we will be prepared to fork out to buy him, while we think they might be prepared to let him go for free, but we know they don't know whether we will actually fork out or not, while they really don't know whether we know they'll be prepared to let him go for free, though they know we know they'll be hoping we think they'll know we will eventually have to cough up. It's pretty straight-forward.

I'm not being funny, but we all contribute enough as it is. Time for the BoD to stump some actual cash up rather than simply "loan" the club money on which they will gain interest. Clarke has worked wonders with f**k all; give him what he deserves.

All speculation at this stage of course. I guess as he was surplus to requirements we were offered him for free in Jan which would free up some wages for Cambridge to bring someone else in. 2 very good goals later and Cambridge think they can get money for him. 2 more goals later... who knows! If Gaffney wants here, he'll be a Rovers player by the end of Jan. That's how it works these days, although he sounds incredibly modest having listened to his interviews last two games and wonder whether he would fight to push it through or whether he's the sort of lad who would just get his head down and play for whoever is his duty to.
