All speculation at this stage of course. I guess as he was surplus to requirements we were offered him for free in Jan which would free up some wages for Cambridge to bring someone else in. 2 very good goals later and Cambridge think they can get money for him. 2 more goals later... who knows! If Gaffney wants here, he'll be a Rovers player by the end of Jan. That's how it works these days, although he sounds incredibly modest having listened to his interviews last two games and wonder whether he would fight to push it through or whether he's the sort of lad who would just get his head down and play for whoever is his duty to. Problem is if say Pompey now come in for him and offer him more money Rovers might not look so attractive to him! Although he does know he's virtually guaranteed of 1st team football with us, plus a potential promotion push.

Hopefully though not too many top L2 clubs were looking at him or really knew anything about him prior to Monday and how many teams would take a punt based on two good games? Hopefully they'll have other targets they go for. Also, I genuinely think he could choose us over a Portsmouth. He has had first team football in front of the biggest crowds he's ever played in front of and hasn't lost a game yet. The gaffer obviously rates him and he must feel loved. In addition, I think the dressing room atmosphere and the togetherness of the squad seems infectious and I can't see why he wouldn't want to be a part of that. Why risk going to another club who are maybe more fancied and on better wages when what he has/could have here he knows is absolutely fantastic. Bet he doesn't want it to end!

Using Portsmouth as an example - I think they've spent must there budget- not sure there's also room left in the kitty.
I think Gaffney will be a rovers player before too long but if it doesn't match with our budget etc... He shouldn't.

DC won't be made a fool out of and I'm sure he won't be held to ransom by Cambridge.
I think he's done well whilst here but I also think a lot of that is down to the management team. It's fair to say that as individuals our squad is overachieving. He's getting the best out of Gaffney like all of our players and there's nothing to say he can't do it again with another striker short of games/form.
I like to think a big factor in the decision will be Gaffney himself pushing to stay. He must be enjoying playing in this team and understand that the move could be a good stepping stone in his career

Cambridge fan here. A lot of stuff on our board is speculation and basically bs (like most!). Derry said today in his post match interview that Rory's loan ends today and that he will be talking to him. Reading between the lines I think we will lose him- which imo will be an effing big mistake. We signed him last January and he was injured until about September. He made his first start against Yeovil after apparently impressing so much in training he had to start- he scored two in a 3-2 win. Next game (against you I believe) he was on the bench. Money was sacked and Derry came and it appears he didn't rate Rory and shunted him out on loan to get "game time". Not sure if he now rates him because he has done so well (some of us aren't surprised) or we are just angling for a better deal. Letting him go I believe will bite us on the arse. Derry wants to shift some out and get some in, and there are a few who deserve to be shown the door but as far as I'm concerned Rory shouldn't be one of them. Players of his calibre are hard to come by. I hope he comes back, signs a new contract and helps us push on to the play-offs but I can't see it happening. Rory seems to feel loved by you and not by us (the club that is). I wouldn't blame him for wanting to be somewhere where he feels loved.

Fortunately his two goals today weren't as impressive as Boxing Day's so I doubt they'll had much more to his value. It's now down to DC deciding if Gaffney's worth the extra or if he can find better value elsewhere, hopefully, more players will be happy to join us now we're at the right end of the table for a change.

I gather all the stops are being pulled out by BRFC to secure his services.
There is a Board meeting Monday and all clubs will be back to normal working from Monday so hopefully things could be agreed by the end of next week.

His contract is up at the end of the season and he wants to come, Derry can't just change his opinion of him in one month, he is hero worshipped here, he'll find it difficult to achieve that status back at cambridge.

Agree with this but his work rate is phenomenal if CU scouts are there they will report on that. He chases, he hassles, he battles and he works hard for the team, reminds me of Big Devon but better. If my team just lost 4-1 I'd be taking him back. Imagine if it was the other way round. We'd be going mental to bring him back

As DC said, we had both agreed verbally that he could come here to the end of the season but things change and it's sods law that he has found his goal scoring boots.
A fee of £50k is worth the gamble and if NH cannot agree to that, then perhaps he should ask someone else who can afford that "beer money"

If 50k is all it is then i'd probably pay it, it's a point of principle though that if last week it was a free and now it's suddenly 50 or maybe 100k it's a bit of a water take. There's a lot of bluff going on, the simple fact is rory prefers it here. Let them have a 30% sell on.

Rory has started well for us but in realty he hasn't played that many games and scored that many goals. He needs to build a reputation and score goals for his own long term reputation. He will do that with us

Thats on the money CG, the bloke has played in a good side ,in front of career best sized crowds, played well scored more than we could have hoped for and been a fans favourite since he came. With no disrespect to Cambridge I have no doubt we could easily match anything they are paying him, after telling him he was here until the end of the season when his contract runs out, i can't imagine for one minute his mind is on playing for Cambridge at all

I think a few of us are forgetting the strength of player power these days - something we've witnessed ourselves previously. Gaffney's tweet and the video doing the rounds on FB prove beyond any doubt he wants to be here going forward. If Cambridge are moving the goalposts at the last minute, all he's got to do is tell them he doesn't want to play for them anymore, slap in a transfer request and then it's probably advantage us. Their chairman has already said they'll need to move players on in order to allow them room to strengthen. As such, the last thing they'll want or need is a player on their books who doesn't want to play for them. He'll be ours before the end of the week. Probably permanently.

The famous "water tight" contract, Hmm, where have I heard that before ? lets hope, Higgsie can sort this one out, or we really do have a problem. UTG

Think Gaffney is worth pulling out a few stops for even if it includes a reasonable fee. It will be an interesting week and hopefully a successful one!

Personally from what I've read and heard in interviews I think he'll be on the pitch next week at Barnet.

Having just watched the highlights of your game against Wimbledon I'd say you're crying out for a decent centre half or two. The defending from set-pieces was shocking and led to 2 of their goals. Just my opinion of course.
