If anyone is interested, I've just taken delivery of a new aquarium. It's saltwater and will host fish and corals. I have started a thread on a Fishy Forum, so if anyone wants to follow my trials and tribulations with the tank they are more than welcome to have a read. Nobby's new reef system

I'll finish the frame today, and then build the rest of it. Hopefully, I'll have it finished before the weekend is out. I've never had a tank with a proper sump before, so this is a bit of an experience for me.

Just make sure the pipework is tight , then make sure you set the cut off levels and test it 1/2 dozen times, fill to the inlet with saltwater leave overnight, make sure you have plenty of towels down as it better to test for leaks and weeps with only a tiny bit of water, if your as sad as me you will sit for hours just watching the sump working, especially if you put a bit of live rock and a clean up crew in, i used to hatch brine shrimp next to my sump and put them in the sump, they would only in there for a day or so till the were sucked up into the tank, you always knew when they were in the main tank as the fish went ballistic So controller diy or ready made

It really is a bit of quality manufacturing. It is more than my life is worth to flood the Living Room. The floor is Oak, so if I flood that I may find something large and unpleasant being rammed up me arse by She Who Casts No Shadow ! I'm still looking at Controllers to decide which one to get. I really don't want to be spending big bucks on something like an Apex though. But like everything with aquariums, it's no rush. It's funny with things like Brine Shrimp isn't it ! Once I've got things settled I will be looking to breed Copepods in the Sump to help feed the main tank.

Typed a feck off long reply last eve and for some reason it disappeared so im trying again with my tinfoil hat on. Are you adverse to a diy controller as there are some cracking builds out there that are well priced. when i had my tank i had separate controllers and 7 double sockets behind the tank my reasons were cheaper to replace 1 thing if something broke Depending on which way you go, my bare minimum would be, a light controller (diy) as one had included wave pumps , moon phase and differing intensities during the day to mimic real conditions, a storm functions is also worth it as if used correctly it can have a good effect on corals etc. Live food there is a good diy system i saw whereby you have 3-6 tubes with a conical bottom a grid plate and a tap at the bottom ,there is also a stand pipe an inch or so above the grid plate and an adjustable air feed at the top of each, dead simple and cheap ,the idea being different types of live food in each, when hatched shells etc fall to the bottom and can be individually fed into sump. I got more pleasure watching the sump than the fish as ,i find it absolutely amazing that scrubbed cleaned live rock will slowly come back to life and was genuinely astonished how stuff could live for so long out of water Still need sump pics

more pics nobbs, close up of sump pls. daft question have you fitted an inlet sock to the sump (mesh type filter) The Sump....... Water comes down the outlet into the first chamber, and passes through two mesh socks (mechanical filtration). It then enters the skimmer section of the sump. After this it moves into the main refugum section where I'll probably physically place the Fluidised reactor running Rowphos, but the outlet from this will return to the skimmer section. It's not perfect, but it will sort of work. The water then enters another chamber which will house the activated carbon, before going under a baffle to the return pump chamber. I'm still trying to find room to place a UV sterilizer. The tank is not wet yet, but as soon as I have the Sump working I'll post some pictures!

The inlet pipe from the tank to the sump, i would put a big sock on it ,as it will collect all the large debris, used one on mine and it helped with water quality no end, plus had the advantage of when it got a big grimy was a simple job to rinse it in the sink with your reactor have you got a control on it or does it run free, somewhere around here i have a tmc controller with relay(ed) socket, which switches on co2, i have the valve as well just needs some ph probes ,if your not in a rush and want it i can dig it out and send it over, i think you mentioned you will be over this year for a game if so you could pick it up close to the mem

I shall be looking at something like an Apex Controller, which will be able to control most things automatically, like shutting down the circulation pumps and skimmer when the auto feeder feeds, and then starting them all back up with the correct timing sequence ie. return pump running for five minutes before the skimmer starts. It will also control the Doser. These new fang-dangled devices are brilliant. Most things can new be controlled via your phone/tablet/PC. With a simple webcam set-up it's now easy to keep an eye on the system when I'm away, and not only keep an eye on things but also change settings etc remotely! If I see the skimmer going into overdrive and over-skimming, it's a simple task to either switch it off remotely until I get back, or call someone to pop in and have a look. I didn't do any work on the tank yesterday as we have a power problem in the house somewhere, so I won't switch anything on at the moment.

What I'm attempting to do is create a nice tank, with corals and fish, without over-complicating things. With so many different ways to run a tank I think a lot of people get caught up in the 'must buy the latest gadget' craze. Bio-Pellets, various reactor elements, Co2, Bailing, Spirox.......the list is endless as you know. My aim is to start with just the stock skimmer, a reactor running Rowphos, and a couple of bags of activated carbon. I aim to dose with the Triton Method, so there will be no need to complete water changes, which is the one task I hate! Plus the new Triton Method doesn't need an Algae Bed, which is another thing I won't have to worry about. I'll also add a UV Sterilizer at some point. I want the tank to run with the minimum of fuss.

So, the tank is now running and I've transferred the first fish over from my old tank. So that's only two Clowns, two Yellow Bellied Damsels and an Orchid Dottyback. No corals have been transferred and none of the Cleanup Crew. The water looks a little cloudy as I had just added the ATM Colony bacteria to kick-start everything. It's also very 'blue' as the shots were taken in the evening so the lights are on 'ramp down' towards sunset. Sump pictures tomorrow.......

A quick video of the Sump. The Skimmer is switched off at the moment, and the Fluidised Reactor hasn't been set-up yet. I've also yet to install the four Dosing tubes.
