thats what ive found during my experiment with a football forum i was born in 1959 and watched rovers with my dad from 1966-1974,then i played for 31 years watching rovers sometimes during that time, then started watching regularly when i finished playing about 9 years ago. i have difficulty relating to rovers fans now compared to my childhood memories of them and find the forum mostly a mix of my thread subject. never mind

I'd say that the types in the thread title have always been on the terraces or in the stands, but we didn't always encounter them personally, due to the size of the grounds. Whereas a forum brings a wide spectrum of fans together in one place - the screen of our laptop/tablet/phone. Also, we tend to have a less jaded view of life during childhood, so the negative side of supporters would probably have largely passed us by without much impact - a bit like the rainy days in the school holidays, which we don't remember as adults! On the whole, I find that the interesting debate and differing opinions, laced with a bit of humour now and then, is enough to outweigh the negative aspects which sometimes rear their heads. Hopefully, you'll stick with the "experiment", as you contribute some interesting views. UTG

Had a disagreement with someone on here then?
The classic melt down, create a thread and label people who you've never met racists, know it alls and homophobes.
Strong thread.

You joined in July 2014, that's some experiment. Was it government funded? Are youy honestly saying there are more racists and homophobes now than back in the 70s 80s? I think the point about social media being able to open up the world to keyboard warriors is a fair one but feel it distorts the truth. Perhaps you should consdier publishing the results of this "experiement" as you seem to have devoted a fair amount of time to the project?

Martin
Can't say it is any more prevalent than it was in your childhood (I am 3 years older than you), in those days skinheads in Bristol were engaged in queer abnd p*kibashing escapades. Many of those skinheads were also football fans.
As Tilly's Thighs sum it up as social media has blossomed, so has the ability for individuals and groups to spread their word. If it wasn't for "farcebook", how many of you would have heard of Britain First?
I agree with Gasshole and Nobby, you have left out a large proportion of the populace in your thread.
Instead of starting a new thread, will this weeks game be off due to a frozen pitch?

Rovers fans were no better then. If the internet had been around in the 70s and 80s, the opinions expressed now, would have been pretty much the same.

There are generations of kids now that have not been exposed to mainstream media portraying sexism, homophia, racism etc. TV shows that I watched in the 70s and 80s openly portrayed these groups in derogatory ways and set it as an acceptable way to treat people. Thankfully things have moved on. Also, there have been some very good debates on this very forum about racism, mental health, homophobia and the like which were well argued and respectful. I don't disagree with the OP that some posters do indeed fall into the groups he has identified but I really think its a lot better now than in the past but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

I should also add he is bang on about the fickleness of many fans these days.
It's almost laughable at times on here how we discard players and teams based on one or two games.

Born in 1959 but still hasn't learnt how to use the Caps Lock?
Given most posters on here seem to have been born in the 60's/70's I'd have thought they represent most of the fans the OP grew up with anyway? If they feel the forum is full of racists etc why have they kept on using it, and how many times have they reported these inappropriate posts to the mods?
