Dad's Army one. John Le Mesurier actually outranked Arthur Lowe in the war. In fact, many of the actors had interesting service careers. Arnold Ridley (Private Godfrey) served in both World Wars, have a look at his Wiki page, fought at the Somme. He can't have done much fighting, he was always in the toilet! John Le Mesurier was married to someone famous wasn't he?

Arnold Ridley, a true hero......
"Ridley was a student teacher and had made his theatrical debut in Prunella at the Theatre Royal, Bristol, when he volunteered for British Army service in August 1914, upon the outbreak of the First World War. He was rejected due to a toe injury, but in 1915 was able to enlist as a private in the Somerset Light Infantry. He saw active service in the war, sustaining several serious injuries: his left hand was left virtually useless by injuries sustained on the Somme; his legs were riddled with shrapnel; he was bayonetted in the groin; and the legacy of a blow to the head by a German soldier's rifle butt left him prone to blackouts. He was medically discharged from the army with the rank of captain."

The reason we don't drive on the right hand side of the road is due to us not being invaded by Napoleon.
The act of driving on the right (horse and carts here) was a practical and symbolic move in Paris and was spread around Europe during his conquests.

I thought it had something to do with holding weapons in the right hand and therefore travelling on the left made it easier to defend yourself with your weapon in the right hand?

Most of Europe and by extension much of the world, travelled on the left for that reason. There was also a perception that it allowed the aristocracy to look down on the lower classes so after the a French Revolution it became law for travelling on the right for symbolic reasons. The US did the same after independence. Incidentally, the sword is also the reason men's shirts button up on the right to avoid the handle being caught up in clothing when drawn.

The thought of travelling down a road and meeting you coming the other way holding your weapon in your right hands scares the sh1t out of me !

As we're talking about history, I saw some interesting stuff last night. My wife is German, and she found some old papers that her late Father had. There were photos of her Grandad in his Werhmarcht uniform. He was killed on the Eastern Front. At least it wasn't an SS uniform ! There was also a lot of other stuff including the telegram informing the family that he had been killed. Also some old German newspaper cuttings with information of the campaign on the Eastern Front. We can only conclude that the newspaper reports in someway show where he was located, and died. Also, loads of pre-war photos, which indicates that the family were quite wealthy.

Married to Hattie Jacques amongst others. So how many people was Hattie Jacques married to? As far as I know only one (marriage) but Le Mesurier had three.

As for Dad's Army, I can't quote this as a fact but I believe the original idea was John LeMesurier as the officer and Arthur Lowe as the sergeant (obvious) one of the writers came up with the genius idea of reversing this.
