In homage to Nobby's spa treatment and SteveK192's match report, I thought I would do one for a recent stay at the Children's Hospital.
On Boxing Day my son was taken poorly with a very high temperature. For someone with his condition it can be dangerous so I called 111. After a few hours we managed to get an out of hours GP appointment (being Boxing Day it was extremely busy) who promptly referred us to A&E.
Arriving at A&E around 9pm we were seen very quickly. The staff there were very thorough and his treatment good. It did mean though that he was not ready for a ward until the early hours and we eventually found ourselves settling in at 5am. I was awake again 2 hours later trying to get my son to have his medication. It is surprising how well you can function on little to no sleep and no food.
So after nearly two weeks of treatment for what became known as a very nasty chest infection he was finally discharged. Still unwell but enough to come home where it makes it easier for us all.
scores are;
111 service - 6/10 this is purely due to the scripts that the initial call handlers use. Any diviation and they struggle.
out of hours GP - 5/10 pretty obvious by this stage but an important part of the jigsaw
A&E - 8/10 they were great and stayed with us throughout. It did help that this was a priority case and having been there for less significant illnesses this could be lower for some.
Ward staff - 8/10 they were very nice and helpful, the doctors could be difficult to pin down due to being on call for emergencies but the nurses were in general always on hand and some felt apologetic when I did some of the caring (as the parent I felt this was for me not to be delegated)
physios - 9/10 MOM very brutal when watching them work but it did wonders and it is difficult to criticise with the results they achieved.
Ancilliary staff - 9/10 these were the cooks and cleaners who ensured the ward was clean and the food arrived when needed. The ones I met were great and enjoyed a chat.
Ward - 8/10 very comfortable with single en suite rooms. My only gripe is that the shape made it difficult to manoeuvre equipment round. Oh and being woken 4 times each night when they come in to do their checks.
Parking - 3/10 it is absolute pants. It was mitigated only by the fact we have a special pass to stay longer than the permitted time.
Work - 9/10 they have been very understanding and flexible.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. It will take some time, but he has recovered before and no doubt will again.
I know the NHS has its faults and frustrations, but in terms of paediatrics we are quite lucky to live in the Bristol area. In my various times there I have met families from many places, including several hours drive away such as South and West Wales and Cornwall.

Shame the NHS will probably collapse through lack of funding and we'll all end up going the way of the US.

Glad the little fellas getting there stu , the humbling thing for me is when your in the hospital ,you've got the kids whining because they have gut rot and the parents are even worse , but those babbers who are really ill mainly are the one with the biggest smiles on their faces and if mobile enough they cause havoc . It's one of the things i most admired with Ann-Marie Irene ,the eyes said agony but she just got on with it, you will know what i mean and for any parent it not onlt gives you that warm feeling inside but give the stregnth to carry on. I've got a lot of respect fer you n yer mrs

Cheers inee and I certainly know what you mean about the strength and warm feeling.
We had a bitter sweet moment last year when we got refused assistance through something called lifetime care. Whilst we didn't get some equipment (sourced it elsewhere since) it meant that by not fulfilling their criteria, he is expected to live past his 18th birthday.
You have to take the positives in life when you can.

My son is much better now.
However, his best friend passed away on the weekend. Suffered from a similar disability and was admitted with a similar condition.
I am a very lucky dad.

Wow, good and bad news. Good that your lad is better, terrible about his friend. Poor bugger. We certainly walk a very fine line don't we?

Sorry to hijack the thread but my Mother was rushed into Southmead at 2am this morning with heart problems. She had a heart attack back in '86 and through a family trait has suffered with irregular heartbeat. This morning she collapsed. Couldn't bring her round. My Father called 999 and within 10 we had Paramedics at our door (which is a miracle in itself considering how difficult our house is to find).
They were amazing. Brought her round, got her talking.
I've just spoken to her, she's fine but will have to spend the next few days under observation. Thank God.
Without the Paramedics, she'd have gone. God Bless each and everyone of them.
Bags.

I've just spoken to her, she's fine. Annoying my Father and the Nurses so pretty much back to normal. Tough old bird my Mother. She'll be in for the next few nights for observation. Phew. I'll fight anyone who says Paramedics earn enough.

Underneath her bluster though, she's probably really worried. Most people, after having a heart problem, suffer from some form of depression, so watch her carefully bags.

Believe me, she's in very good hands. She's already sent Father home to bring her her reading glasses, every single Womens Own, Good Housekeeping, How to control your Gardener magazine, and now quite fancies a tuna mayo sandwich. So yea, she's fine.

Seems strange to "like" a post like that, hope you understand. Glad things are on the mend. My late mum suffered her first heart attack shortly after Devon White equalised at Wembley. My dad was very annoyed as he wanted to stay until the end but as it wasn't fatal he thought it best to go with her in the ambulance. I had my Biology exam the next day, typically it was on the heart!

Hope your Mum is ok Baggins. I collapsed with an irregular heartbeat in 2012 and almost didn't make it. I "died" when I got to hospital and they tried four times with the defibrillator but in the end drugs pulled me through. It was a bit emotional seeing my family again.
