Carl Saunders had already played nearly 100 games in the top flight before he signed for Rovers. To have half the team go on and play top flight football is still impressive. I can't see any of our current squad going on to do that. Football has changed some what since 1990 though. Isn't the Championship the new "top flight" as far as most British players are now concerned? There's almost as many foreigners in The Championship now too.

Vaughan Jones.Geoff Twentyman.Andy Reece,Carl Saunders,Percy Purnell.David Mehew don't think any of those went on to pla top flight football. The only ones whe did were Martin.Yates.Holloway.Penrice and White Carl Saunders had already played nearly 100 games in the top flight before he signed for Rovers. The clue is in the statement that says players who went on to play top flight football after leaving rovers and Carl definitely did not do that.and when you look at it he was the only player in that squ ad who cost a fee. Correction ollie cost 10.000.

I agree with the other poster that the team didn't over achieve, when half of the team went onto play top flight football, and loanees we had like Denis Bailey also did. It was good scouting and obviously good coaching from Francis but they were all good players.

So you are actuaLly saying that gerrys team didn't over achieve because some of them improved under gerry and the were expected to get promoted despite the fact that the majority were lower league players.rejects from other clubs or came through our youth system. That is denigrating the achievevents of a group of players who didn't know when they were beaten and reached heights that they could only dream of

Pretty much every club at that level were in the same boat back then. There wasn't billionaire owners and rich benefactors chucking huge amounts of money at Football clubs. Gerry was clearly a good manager that's why he himself went on to manage in the top flight but they were clearly good players also. When Rovers got relegated in 1981, 3 out of our first 4 seasons back down would of seen us in the Play Offs today. When Francis took over I think we finished 18th, Gerry got us back to 8th, then 5th and then Champions, winning the league was fantastic but 6 years out of 9 back in Division 3 we were there or thereabouts anyway. I don't think we overachieved imo.

When GF took over we were about 21st in division 3 but we went on something like a 20 match unbeaten run and finished 8th finishing with a 2-1 loss to Brighton away at goldstone, then season after lost playoffs to port vale then 1990 done the Sh1!heads for the championship

Gerry loaned the club the £10'000 to bring Ollie back from Brentford. I remember that clearly
