It is clear that we are having the same problems as last season, we cannot defend. Only Oldham have let in more goals than us though we have little problem scoring. My worry is we have nobody to challenge Lockyer and Sweeney. Burn and Broadbent won't frighten either of them. Most clubs in the league have a good defensive midfielder sat in front of the back four (Vincelot Bradford Grant Peterborough). We should have got one but for whatever reason. Did not. Ollie Clarke is not the answer, currently we are playing Chris Lines there but he hasn't got a tackle or decent header in him.
I know we have a very capable team but it seems to me that Sercombe, despite being a good player, has upset the balance within the team. We are being over run in midfield every game. It's like when JJ played for us, he went forward, scored goals but left gaps and put pressure on the defence.
I trust in D.C. but cannot see that we are going to finish any higher than we did last season. Yes, the cost of players etc, is high but we cannot keep living on underachieving, D.C. knows we are short and I think he is managing with his hands tied.
Anyway keep the faith UTG

We definitely let them play in the middle third way too much last night. You could see that from the first ten minutes. Then when they realised at the end of the first half that Smith couldn't withstand a shot with some oomph behind it that was what they came out and did for the first ten minutes of the second half and it paid off.

In my opinion the issue isn't so much the defence itself but the protection it is given.
The balance of the midfield is awful and is full of players who are reasonably tidy on the ball but have little grit. One injury to Sinclair and we look absolutely threadbare. We were forced to change formation last night due to Lines carrying a knock and generally do not have the players to play 4-4-2.
Last night for a time we had Moore, Lines, Sercombe and Bodin across the midfield which is always going to get overrun.
We badly need a horrible bastard in there to win the battle.

And to think how Sincs gets slagged off. He is the one we are missing. Someone who gets in their faces and doesn't give them a minutes peace.
Leadbitter is a joke. Not even a footballer.
Brown past his sell by date.
Clarke not even fit.
Lines can't tackle, shoot or head a ball. Otherwise brilliant.
Bodin invisible for the last three games.
Smith limping after 10 minutes, never mind his damaged hand.
Moore. Just a joke surely
Sweeney not at the races yet.
Ellis back to useless normality after a purple period.
Why was Partington not playing?
Why was Bola not selected after a great game at Fulham? Why is he here if he can't get in the team?
Why did it take so long to bring on Telford ?
Why is Nicholls allowed to play a lone role when the big guy he needs to play off spends most of his/their time out wide?
Why did we not get a big strong striker in who can give us a chance to head a ball in the opposition area? All our corners and free kicks are just another means of giving the ball away. We can't win headers. We haven't had a centre forward since Lambert. But yet again we made no attempt to sign one.
We have no pace up front.
There is no structure to the team, in fact they don't even know one another as the constant chopping and changing evidences.
Over to you DC. Even the gloves aren't funny any more.
The only person not criticised in his match summary last night was himself. Perhaps he ought to look closer to home, and change projects.

But that midfield took us from 2-0 down to 2-2, we lost because yet again Leads got caught out not really because the CM's couldn't tackle, Leads really needs time out in the reserves to regain his form so it's just a pity our reserve players now never seem to play games, as the development squad seem to have taken their places in mid week development/reserve games!! The big question is why can't Partington play in three games in a week but OC returning from what appears a more serious injury can?

Yeah I said that pre - window closing. We did need to sign a left winger but needed a defensive midfielder more in case Clarke and Sinclair were both injured or out of form. Gutted I called it though ☹️

The reason Rovers have no problems scoring is there is an overload in attacking players. Nicholls Harrison Bodin Moore Sercombe.
with fullbacks that are expected to bomb forward and provide crosses. This last feature should be seen as a bonus on occasions not the bread and butter approach.Full backs are there to defend primarily to win tackles and stop the opposition gaining ground down the wings. Crossing the ball is mostly the job of the midfield. The lack of consistent goal scorers in a way can be good ,its means other teams are not that interested in your individuals as none of them stand out.It does mean you have to play a lot of them though in a game.If you add the fact Telford,Lines and Gaffney came on it means Rovers played 8 attacking players to score 2 goals. Add to it the fullbacks getting forward and its no shock the team will leak goals as a consequence .The gamble is though that Rovers will score more goals ,sometimes it works sometimes not.

The honeymoon is long over DC it's all down to you to put it right. A bit of stability in team selection wouldn't go amiss. Only a few really know why the team wasn't strengthened where it should have been - there was plenty of time to do it - this isn't a hindsight statement. How much have we actually spent on getting players in since the end of January - I'd guess around £500k top. Take the £300k from the Taylor transfer and another circa £300k from the Chelsea match and we're still in credit - IMO I feel the supporters have been sold short in all honesty. The team is arguably weak in depth in all areas - back, middle and front.

Let's be honest, the "evolution not revolution" guff was so the owners didn't have to invest the required amount in the team. We have come a long way in a short amount of time, fair play to DC and the players, but the manager can't keep over achieving and performing miracles. As DC said himself, if you want the better players you have to pay. It's now up to the owners to put their hand in their pockets and back the manager with money for a higher calibre of player - it's needed if we want to progress.
