What happens from here on will determine whether he’s a good signing or not if he goes another 15 games without scoring then 2 in 30 isn’t good enough. We’ll see it’s going to be interesting to see if he looks any hungrier, one of the problems I’ve had with him is he often doesn’t bother running on to a 50/50 through ball or jogs and doesn’t sprint almost as if he just doesn’t want it enough.

If Gaffney is scoring one in three games or better he is the first choice striker. If Bodin scores one in two games from wide midfield then play him there. If Nichols starts scoring from a central striker position then play him there. Harrison and Telford and Moore as replacements until their scoring record becomes better than the original choices. Seems straightforward enough doesn't it ? The issue is how to set up the midfield so that it is strong enough defensively but allows for Bodin to be in it. Which would mean Sinclair and Clarke playing with Bodin and either Lines or Sercombe. So with the cup games coming up does D.C. opt to play EH and DT in the EFL trophy games and rest RG and TN ? Or try to give the TN/RG combo a run of games and into a scoring habit ? So we now drop Harrison, our best striker this season so far, as Nichols record in the last game is better? Not sure I see the logic in that viewpoint!

Whatever you think of Nichols,I was glad he got a good response for the fans when he was substituted, all standing and clapping him in the stand. He must have appreciated it and hopefully it will give him more confidence.

Proper fans, although I must admit I was getting towards the end of my tether.

If he hadn't looked like scoring, I'd have thought we'd been done up like a kipper by Darragh again.
However, I have seen his shots hit the woodwork, produce amazing saves, and be stopped by last ditch blocks.
As time has gone on, the lack of goals (and no doubt what he reads on here) has affected his confidence. He's been looking for a pass when he should be shooting and he hasn't wanted to take defenders on or run at them.
To coin an old phrase, he's needed one to go in off his arse.
Well yesterday it didn't go in off his arse, but it was as good as. Let's hope it gives him his confidence back and he can now show us what we've paid the reputed 300K for!

Agree, he doesn’t run enough generally, fact he was still in offside position for that back pass was either a stroke of genius or an example of him not keeping up with the game!

I hope this was the first of many, I agree, give the fella the right service, his confidence will come back and the goals will come.

A few weeks ago you were saying he was an awful signing and we didn't have a natural goalscorer, 1 goal later and... I have to ask what Nichols has done to change your mind the past few weeks?

My opinion is that he does do quite a lot of running. He closes down the opposition and chases across their back 4 quite well. I’m delighted he scored and hope this is the springboard to the goals he should be getting.

Simple facts to this thread, when he signed he said he liked to play off the big man and be off his shoulder, in essence the last man.
He would not have scored this goal in the majority of his games this season as he hasn’t really played as as the last man. He has played the majority on the wing or in the hole coming short for the ball. We also don’t play wingers and how often do we see crosses like this? I think some on here need to get there head out of the clouds and judge him in inside the 18 yard box.

Cureton and Taylor would have scored the chance on the first half which he scuffed and their keeper tipped round the post... I really really hope he can now go on a run and finally show us what we spent the cash on. He's a tidy player and has ability no doubt, but a 20 goal man? I'm not yet convinced. (But would love to be proved wrong) Yeah, neither Cureton or Taylor ever missed a chance...

A lot of spot on comments about how we sat off and allowed them to have the ball at the back. That performance took real discipline from the whole team especially when the crowd are getting inpatient and shouting to close them down and press. That must be a managers nightmare when the crowd are yelling and getting inpatient. When you lose shape and you press as a single units that's when you get picked apart and concede goal after goal. It was clear MK had no plan B and DC clearly knew this and exploited it, as their no. 10 was an absolute beast but he was never going to trouble us in behind. Therefore having them play in front of us played into our hands. What does worry me still is the lack of real class / quality in the final third. However games like yesterday are the sort of results we need to grind out. Great 3 points and back to winning ways! I thought MK were a slow ploddy team - and any opposition tactically on it would have done the same as us. They wanted to walk the ball to our 18 yard line most of the time - compare them to Pboro or Oxford who moved the ball quickly to get at our back 4 as quickly as they could. Or Shrewsbury, their direct running was crazy

I think you could be right Paul but unfortunately I think we will not find out- reason because DC is not capable of finding either a targetman, two wingers or a defensive midfielder of quality in January. I see so much talk of 'wingers' and 'target men' on this forum. If we are genuinely interested in evolving football at Rovers we need to move beyond antiquated systems that have been long abandoned beyond the lower tiers of British football.

Surely if he never moves beyond 'playing off the big man' he will never play at a higher level than this. There is a chance DC is improving his all round game. Optimistic I know but let's see.

I think his pass and vision for Sercombe’s goal at Northampton showed his ability. But right now we have an issue scoring goals with no Bodin, we never scored in the 3 previous games to Saturday. I remember when they used to say to Shaun Goater “feed the Goat”......well let’s feed Nicholls in the right place because no one else in our squad has scored 12/13 league goals in Div1 in a season before upfront.

Reminds me so much of the Snake... The way he moves off of the ball, the way he comes alive when the ball is in and around the box and also the way he is disinterested when the ball is not in that area!
I actually think he is a far better technical player than Matty T as well.
Much like Matty T he really does need to played through the middle and ideally off of a target man to really excel.
Play him up top off of a target man and he will score plenty of goals, has all the attributes.

What would you call Costa, Lukaku, Kane, Carrol, and the other big centre fowards in top flight football. Plus im pretty sure Ronaldo, Robben etc are wingers. It was said wing backs were antiquated a while ago, yet they're still used, 442 was antiquated. It's 11 v 11 and always has been, but a team that's successful will get the system they use copied, like Spain and yet the Dutch stuffed them playing 442 and pressing the ball not long ago.

Most of the teams who have beaten us this season have width and pace which we lack completely and most have a big man up front. Most successful teams pressurise from the off and only a few teams sit back and let you play like we do. No system other than 2-3-5 has really been antiquated and if a team has pace in abundance and pressurise from the front the formation doesn't really matter. Our system is very defensive orientated with all the energy being used up by our front players and playing that way we will struggle to beat any of the decent teams in this division.

Steve if managing a Div 1 football club is so easy why haven't you ever given it a go, it must pay better than your day time job?
