What would you call Costa, Lukaku, Kane, Carrol, and the other big centre fowards in top flight football. Plus im pretty sure Ronaldo, Robben etc are wingers. It was said wing backs were antiquated a while ago, yet they're still used, 442 was antiquated. It's 11 v 11 and always has been, but a team that's successful will get the system they use copied, like Spain and yet the Dutch stuffed them playing 442 and pressing the ball not long ago. I'd call them big strong centre forwards but they don't operate as target men in the old sense. Dito Ronaldo and Robben much more than just winders beating a man and getting crosses in. Agree wing backs have made a resurgence and game constantly evolving. It's more the 'hitting the big man and feeding off the knock downs' that is long gone. They're definitely not static target men, but big strong centre forwards like Lambert i still call target men even though there is more to their game than just knock downs. Agree about route one football being long gone, thankfully.

I will disagree with you on calling Ricky Lambert a target man, Liverpool signed him to play in that role even though he had played for Southampton more as a number 10. Consequently he got very little game time playing for his boyhood club. In the modern game, forwards need to adapt to different tactics and team structures. Having a Blisset type player as a plan C or D isn't the end of the world, but few teams look at football that way anymore. UTG

People talk about playing with a target man but i reckon we have a young player who is developing into a good target man already at the club.

UTG The reason i call Lambert a target man was because he led the line, he was the player we played through, be it the high ball or into feet with his back to goal, then feeding the ball out wide or slipping the late running Disley in. He also was good at knock downs in the box. I'll just call them big centre forwards from now on then, and i still think we need one too
