Has Bodin sent us a leaving message at all? Not being needy or anything, but would be a nice touch considering we've been a stepping stone to him now earning a fortune and flirting with promotion to the prem Though I guess we didnt ever have a decent song for him.. I haven't seen anything. Much as I like Billy a bit disappointed given he owes so much to DC and Rovers True. I guess in his defence it has been less than 24hrs!!!

So in the last year, we probably should have got 5m+ for selling our best 2 players.Instead, we might have got 745,000. Good business that. These Jordanians certainly know how to do business. Funniest post this year well done

What is so funny about that? £5m....... It's not unrealistic in todays market to to expect £2.5mil for a striker who scored 67 goals in 112 starts for us and nor is unreasonable to expect a similar amount for a wide player who has scored 37 goals in 71 starts IMHO.

TWe had to re-sign him and he/his agent would only do so with the release clause.
If we hadn't of done it, he would have gone for nothing anyway
As for Billy he had 6 months left, we made him 4 different contract offers. He clearly wanted to go Do you take the money or risk him going for nothing?

We are talking about Bristol Rovers here, not some up market football team from The championship

We shouldn't have got in the position where Taylor had us over a barrel and his contract should've been extended long before that and similar applies to Bodin, his contract should've been extended long before it got to this stage. I'm sure we could've offered a deal more recently that was too good to refuse with the promise that if his true value was met then he could leave.

Are they "up market football teams from the Championship"?

I don't disagree with the fact the contract situations should be looked at.
Part of the trouble is we were buying players for the conference, or coming of a nasty injury like Billy and we didn't know if they would cut the mustard. We have been burned by long contracts and players before.
Not long ago this season some people were calling half the squad conference payers that aren't good enough, but probably expect them to be tied down on 10 year contracts so we get money for them
It's a difficult balancing act

So to protect our investment in Ellis and Tom Lock we should offer them 5 year contracts in the hope we may get Multi million pound fee's for them ?

Ttransfer fees have gone nuts.

Players like them, full and former youth internationals, shouldn't be allowed to get to the stage where they have 6 months to run on their contracts, surely you can understand that?

I understand where you are coming from, but our recent activity with these deals makes us look like soft touches and out of touch when you consider the current market. Billy has been proving for a couple of seasons now he can cut the mustard, his record shows that...and the same for Taylor. It is a difficult balancing act and one we've clearly got wrong IMHO.

And this is why I think the balance of power needs to shift a bit in the clubs favour. How can it be right that a player, just because he is over a certain age, has the opportunity to run down a contract and move for nothing at the end of the contract? That's why there are so many greedy agents in the game now, they look primarily to line their own pockets ans to hell with the affected F.C. As Bodin or any other player had been offered a new and improved contract that should mean they remain with their club unless another club is prepared to meet a fair valuation for that player. The fee could be decided by some form of arbitration panel. Such a scheme would protect the smaller club, and also disincentive these greedy agents, who don't give a toss for the club that loses out. It is through smaller clubs discovering and nurturing raw talent that these bigger clubs with money can improve their squads. I'm not saying that's wrong, but they should be made to pay a fair price, not cherry pick when they know a player is in his last 6 months. If the present system is allowed to continue, it will only be a matter of time before smaller clubs start to fall off the perch. Once one goes, the dominoes effect will surely follow.
