It was not that many years ago when we used to regularly give out 3 year deals and some players used to stagnate, not bother and we would end up paying some off.
At least this way players are more interested and I don't blame Billy trying to better himself and I think a sell-on clause might prove to be a good bit of business in his case.

Great start to 2018! Had to give up on my ill cat which was very emotional, been evicted with my Mrs and 18 month son, proper skint and rovers all doom and gloom with BB going. What’s next? dont worry about the Gas mate family much more important, all the best 👍 thanks PP! Rough few days and now a stinking cold to top it off! But as they say all is well that ends well, so I’m keeping my chin up and battling on! It’s what us gasheads are best at! UTG! P.s I’ll be going round the mem with a bucket at this rate! Lol!

Has Bodin sent us a leaving message at all? Not being needy or anything, but would be a nice touch considering we've been a stepping stone to him now earning a fortune and flirting with promotion to the prem Though I guess we didnt ever have a decent song for him..

Can't believe he lets his phone go down to 15%. Not the sort of player I want at my club in hindsight. Good riddance.

23.55, surely he should be in bed at that time of night? Disgraceful I’m glad he’s gone.

well Taylor wasn't our player. TWe had to re-sign him and he/his agent would only do so with the release clause.
If we hadn't of done it, he would have gone for nothing anyway
As for Billy he had 6 months left, we made him 4 different contract offers. He clearly wanted to go Do you take the money or risk him going for nothing?
And this is why I think the balance of power needs to shift a bit in the clubs favour. How can it be right that a player, just because he is over a certain age, has the opportunity to run down a contract and move for nothing at the end of the contract? That's why there are so many greedy agents in the game now, they look primarily to line their own pockets ans to hell with the affected F.C. As Bodin or any other player had been offered a new and improved contract that should mean they remain with their club unless another club is prepared to meet a fair valuation for that player. The fee could be decided by some form of arbitration panel. Such a scheme would protect the smaller club, and also disincentive these greedy agents, who don't give a toss for the club that loses out. It is through smaller clubs discovering and nurturing raw talent that these bigger clubs with money can improve their squads. I'm not saying that's wrong, but they should be made to pay a fair price, not cherry pick when they know a player is in his last 6 months. If the present system is allowed to continue, it will only be a matter of time before smaller clubs start to fall off the perch. Once one goes, the dominoes effect will surely follow. I don't know why we don't have rolling 12-month contracts for players. Or do we? It's common in other industries.

Only met Billy briefly a couple of times but he really did strike me as a most humble and modest guy.I hope and believe he will tear championship defences a new one and go to have a fantastic career.Good on you Billy Bob.

You miss the point. The point is being higher up the chain. Look at Brentford. They still sell their best players. They sold 3 to Birmingham this season. Scott Hogan to Villa last year. On their way up the leagues they sold their best players too. The aim is to replace them with better one's which Brentford have done. yes, that's the point. They make vast fortunes for the same players they got for a (relative) pittance from lower lges. Luton sold Andre Grey for 'undisclosed fee' but just 1 season later brentford sold for circa £6m. The profit must have been enormous. Ditto Hogan - bought for £750,000 - sold for £12-15m. I don;t have a problem with selling, but selling the best lge 1 players to champ teams is basically a license for THEM to print money. We need to make that money.

Why the secrecy over the fee for BB, what do we have to gain or lose by not just saying what he was signed for? Sorry just do not get it. UTG !

[merged into this thread -AF]I read that it was Prestons end that requested it to be announced as undisclosed. Billy at his best was a pleasure watch. One of the few players we’ve had for a long time that whenever he got the ball in the final third, you knew something special could happen. Unfortunately, the reality is we can’t compete with championship clubs and the step up is too good an oportunity for players at L1 to turn down. Wish him nothing but the best of luck.

I cant imagine PNE would look worst from that deal had the figure been confirmed, no way Rovers would have wanted it public, 2 best players gone for pittance within 12 months. And they say decent players arent available cheap in January!!
