I remember recommending a player to the chairman of Bristol Rovers but got no reply so I didn't bother again. I was watching match of the day and this lad Chris Ronaldo was playing awfully well for a Manchester team , I thought ,theres a lad who could probably get picked at Rovers. Ive seen quite a few players on my scouting tool , BBC 1 that could have been good for Rovers over the years. Harry Kane , Vincent Kompany , Wayne Rooney , David Beckham to name but a few. But whats the point in recommending them if the club don't do anything about it. There's no way you saw that lot on BBC 1.Are you sure it wasn't Sky Sports?

But how much chaff do you have to go through to get to the wheat? Perhaps we did look at some of those players, but for whatever reason the acquisition wasn't right at the time, or we felt that someone else was better and were unlucky to be wrong. It's like stockpicking, with hindsight investing in Apple in the mid nineties would have been a great idea, but investing in MySpace or Yahoo would have seemed a much better bet. You give yourself the best chances by doing research, but ultimately there's .lot of luck involved, which is why most active investment funds underperform the market.
Or maybe, as I have found out, the club don't like the thought of you doing their job for them.
That's the impression I got anyway.
I used to recommend a lot of players to Rovers but don't bother now, just keep a list of players for myself and see how they develop, and watch on average 3 live games per week.
Early retirement is good!!
Its always good to have rank amateurs recommending players to the club but its important to remember using professional football people should always be your main source when signing players imo.

Personally I don't believe any of us can be 'rank amateurs' in judging footballers, given the number of games we watch.
Do you know the difference between a scout and someone who watches a lot of matches? do they get some sort of certificate?

There was a chap that used to work as a teacher and also did some scouting for David Moyes. Would he be classed as a professional football person or a rank amateur?

I think quite a lot of scouts were ex professional footballers but im sure not all of them. Ive heard people saying so and so who played for lawrence rovers or something should have been a pro and i know they were nowhere near that level or ever could have been. I do think its a mistake for a club like rovers to ignore any tip offs from anybody,i do think that. Youve made your call on kyle bennett I think you said you dont rate him etc so we will get a first hand view of your judgement during the likely 3 years of his contract. Whats your view on craig and mensah? sorry if ive missed that. You wouldnt commit on tom broadbent because you havnt seen enough of him.

I think quite a lot of scouts were ex professional footballers but im sure not all of them. Joe Shields, the 30-something scout who spotted Jadon Sancho for Manchester City, never played professional football. Steve Rowley, the former Arsenal chief scout, never played professional football. Their highly-rated new chief scout, Sven Mislintat, never played professional football. Mark Anderson, who discovered Raheem Sterling, never played professional football. Tim Coe, the 31-year-old Crystal Palace chief scout and former Reading scout, never played professional football. Steve Walsh, who discovered N'golo Kante for Leicester and now Dof/chief scout at Everton, never played professional football. Ross Wilson, the highly-rated director of scouting and recruitment at Southampton, never played professional football.

My father scouts for clubs in the US and he has never played football professionally.
As a gashead, he used to recommend players to Rovers as well but says its a waste of time.
Shame really as he has helped quite a few decent English players sign for US teams of late.

To be honest you and to a lesser degree pirate come across all bitter and twisted because right or wrong rovers have ignored your recommendations. Funny thing is you tell us about all the players we should have signed but never or seldom see play but when i ask for your judgement on craig and mensah your lost for words! At least youve told us kyle bennett is a rubbish signing so we know not to get too exited about him.

Not saying he wont for us but I wont be expecting too much. As for the other 2 ive not seen Mensah play and cant remember watching Craig although im sure I have quite a few times.
