I find the whole "The owners haven't backed DC" narrative to be a very lazy one. - Nichols was one of DC's top targets. He's a striker he admired, who is young, and got 12 goals in L1 last season. The owners backed him with a large fee, and a good wage too.
- Sercombe was DC's #1 target. The owners backed him with a decent fee, and very good wages I would expect.
- The owners helped to bring Sweeney back, who was a key target for DC.
- DC signed two good L1 keepers, both on first team wages. Granted no fee involved, and DC did it within his budget, but you would assume they were top targets for him.
- The owners backed DC in January after losing Bodin - I would argue both Bennett and Craig are earning more than Bodin was, and probably more than most of the squad. They were also top targets for him.
- The owners have built an U23 Development squad out of their own pockets. Securing the future talent of this club.
- The owners have bought land for a training ground, and are submitting a planning application soon.
So in summary, DC secured a LOT of his top targets. So how is that not backing him? They've also strengthened our youth prospects and are building a training ground.
The only negative I can see is the stadium. The UWE fell through, and now they're back to the drawing board. Personally I'm not sure there was a Plan B, and I agree that it's going to take time to figure out the best way forwards. We will get there. They've barely been here 2 years and the progress we've made off the pitch under them is fantastic. Give it time. I think a lot of people will be surprised.

Good post, DC spent over £500,000 in the summer, how many former managers could say that?

Imo there’s been more backing than ever at rovers. Fry’s comments sound like someone who thought they might be able to screw us out of extra penny’s in the summer- and is a little bitter because they didn’t get the big bucks they’d hoped for. As for easy to back D.C? Absolute horse manure. It would just be watering in the wind, widening the gap between operating costs and turnover is damn right foolish. We’re doing things the right way for once. Let’s assume Wael has the money. How much would appetise some on here? And how far would that last? We’ve got to build the club from foundations. There’s no quick fix. Most would be content with a Play Off spot this season and a chance of another Wembley visit/outside chance of promotion? The ALQ's have spent over £12m so far and not really got a lot to show for it, another few £100K's on a DCM & winger (& a decent striker?) in the summer and we could be right in the mix now not 2 or 3 wins behind the pack. Wael would still be seen as an hero and Friday's game would be a bumper crowd and games v Charlton, Blackburn and Wigan mostly likely sell outs. But another player player guarantees nothing. What your talking about is points. We can look at many variables this season that are closer guarantees a fullhouse: - a last winner avoided at scunny. - and a competent ref at Plymouth. Would see us competing for 2 playoffs places and the packed crowds you mention. But these arguement s are equally as hindsight’s as the extra player. We’d of all blown the budget for Marriott in June now. Many would’ve had reservations back then. Overall, is investment up? Yes. Also, kinda rich (Fry) saying the owners should be backed more whilst charging fans £28.

I think the owners have backed the manager relative to the current infrastructure and finances of the club. I reckon dc was a bit fed up with his budget at the start of the season and made that very clear in interviews for a while at least.

I like to think that what the owners have done by giving DC a 5 year contract is buy some consistency and stability for the club.
At the moment, they are not gambling millions on a promotion push, so the only pressure on DC from them is to keep us in league one.
I think they will inject the cash for a promotion push, but only when the time is right. If DC can obtain a promotion before then, that would be great.
If not, I think they will give him the means to do so once we have a training ground, a stadium plan, and are reaping the financial rewards of work being done by Tom Gorringe and the new CEO.

Are you SH or TN's agent??? I'd be surprised if we could get somebody to take him off our hands for free this summer. I do wonder what we did pay for him as it's hard to believe DC thought he was worth £300K given how careful he has been with his transfer funds.

I'll have you know that I have a luxurious mane of hair and my physique can only be described as 'athletic'. She Who Casts No Shadow would probably agree with the 'nobody' tag though.

Well DC clearly wanted him and his record was reasonable. Stewart had worked with him previously, and I am sure they thought they could work with him and improve him.
Even if he has been disappointing/poor/crap (delete as you see fit) I can still see why they bought him. He is technically a good footballer in the same sort of style Matty Taylor was.
I would like to think we will keep him we can continue to work with him, and he starts next season with a clean slate for me, but next season yes he is under pressure

I thought he was a good signing when we got him. Hasn't worked out at all.

I'm not saying Nichols has been a good player for us, I'm saying DC clearly wanted him, and he cost a fair bit because of his age and L1 record. The owners backed DC by giving him the money to get the player he wanted.

As much as I like DC I have to say apart from Taylor, signing top strikers is not his forte.
It was Luke James last season, Tom Nichols this season, hardly scoring for us in over 2 seasons between them. I would struggle to spend circa £300k on a striker who scores as few as Nichols has.
Hopefully Nichols will turn things around as he certainly wont improve on his current contract and keep that tidy missus happy elsewhere.
