I absolutely hate saying this as DC is a legend however on rebuilding the double promotion side who were largely put together in non league he has really been found wanting. His approach to recruitment has always left us starting slow but this squad he has put together is an absolute shower. He has move away from his successful formula of young hungry players and has just been found out. He has over half a million to spend on strikers more then any other manager but signed garbage.
For me the only way i can see him turning this situation around or taking us further is with the addition of a dof or a really decent chief scout. I cant see DC handing over control of recruitment and as suh perhaps we are at the point where we need to consider a change ?
Please change my mind as i feel terrible

More often than not the “new man coming in has lifted the team to new heights” fails to materialise. 9 time’s out of 10 the “new man coming in has guided relegation threatened club to relegation” or “new man coming in replaced after five straight defeats”. DC would get us out of L2.

We are losing games by the smallest of margins, an upturn in form in certain players, a couple of adjustments to the way we set up or a few new faces in January could be that little bit extra we need to turn our fortunes around.
What I like about Darrell is that he is an honest, passionate guy who feels our frustrations and gets us like no other manager would. I have no doubt he will not rest until he can turn us around and as December and January swing around and with it the January transfer window and our usual upturn in form, I am utterly convinced that he is the man for the job.

You simply will never replace that with 5-600k. Agree that the players coming in haven't been good enough but I feel that is what you get today for the money he has been allowed to spend.

Darrell is one of very few positives we have at the moment, if he goes I fear the club would fall apart.
Maybe I'm in a minority but I wouldnt let him go even if we do end up going down this season.

Hear hear, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. DC very much IN, in my book. Even if we go down.

Im not convinced with his approach to recruitment or pre season generally. Something needs to change in that regard.

Taylor, Harrison, Bodin and Gaffney were sold for around £1.6m (rough figures in this age of undisclosed sums!). You simply cannot replace that kind of quality with players that cost something around £600k (Nichols, Payne, Reilly). Rovers managers have always faced this and it may be that it continues to be the right approach for the club to take. But if it is, in this age when money is a bigger factor in where teams finish, we have to accept that our natural level is lower than we historically felt it was. I suspect that we are 'naturally' a League 2 club now. The ground would certainly back that up! Let's not criticise the best manager we've had in years when he is being held back by the situation the club is in, rather than the club being held back by him.

Darrell is without a shadow of doubt our biggest asset. Without him, we are considerably worse off and yes, I think the club would split itself in two. And yes, if we go down, he should get the opportunity to bring us back up. Aside from the sentimental / loyalty aspect, his credentials are exactly what we would want in a new manager. If he had a season in League 2 where we were clearly making no progress, maybe that might be the time to question whether he is at the end of his shelf life as our manager. But until then, let's get behind the manager who has us playing at this level. Without him, we might be like Torquay, playing the likes of Bath, WSM and Chippenham.

So our competitors whose strikers are scoring goals all spent well in excess of 600k for those players and their goals? Pffft. Walsall spent 35k on a striker who has as many goals as all our strikers combined! There are bargains to be had out there it's just our scouting system is absolutely pathetic. As if DC wasn't a bad enough judge of a player since we reached league one the guy who was hired to help him out in this regard was his choice! There is simply no excuse whatsoever for how pathetic our strikers are and the buck stops with DC on that. I'm not sure that's enough to earn him the sack. I am sure there are better managers out there but the Chuckle Brothers are likely to give the job to Stewart or some other insipid internal promotion on the cheap.

Ok, allow me to try and pursuade you, it's not worth the gamble at this stage imo.
Any new manager would want to rebuild the squad which could take several windows to sort out, by which time we could be back down to the conference where we would probably then need a manager like DC again!
Remember that DC is really the ONLY reason we have even managed to get back up to L1, it's not happened by fluke and it's not down to the owners, it's DC and his team.
I think it's his successful approach to the development of lower league players such as Taylor, Bodin, Ellis, Browner (and you could also add Locks, OC, James Clarke and Ollie Clarke to that list imo) that has allowed us to over achieve in the last few seasons but in doing so we have now lost the best of the bunch to the next level up which is the main reason we are now struggling to climb the table.
It's true that the replacements we have brought in are not as good as the players we have sold. It's also a fair point to say that DC has chosen them and spent some decent sums in the process but I think we all would have expected Payne and Nichols to have actually been able to find the back of the net a few times so far this season! Had they done so then this which would have been the difference as it would have gained us several points as correct me if I am wrong but I believe we've not been beaten by more than 1 goal yet this season.
Fingers crossed he will be able to get a couple of decent reinforcements in Jan, but irrespective of this I believe DC can keep us up and I think it's worth sticking with him to see whether he can turn things around.
Keep the faith.
UTG!

The irony of this thread / post is that this was certainly not the right match to raise this.
Saved pen, a couple of stunning saves from their keeper, Dam awful, match losing ref / lino.
Whilst in general I appreciate results have been poor / goalscoring ability is awful, and that narrow losses cannot continue forever, some signs are ok.
The result was crap but the performance wasn't in general. Def the wrong match to be too critical of rovers or DC.

DC has been finding these bargains for years...Taylor, Bodin, Gaffney...as well as being the manager to finally realise Harrison's potential. But you can't KEEP doing it time after time. Eventually, you're going to get a reduction in quality, which is what has happened now. If you sold a car for £15k, then bought a new one for £6k, you wouldn't expect your new car to be as good as the one you'd sold, would you?

What a terrible line up. I agree with a lot of the posts on this thread and im glad and reassured to see people still feel he can turn it around. For me he needs a proper head of recruitment not a mate. I dont like us signing the kids of our recruitment team as soon as they come here either. Thanks for the posts and sensible debates

Problem is our recent league form is shocking, the Blackpool away win now looks a complete fluke/good timing after their Arsenal cup game, Wimbledon we beat courtesy of two fluke goals, so it's way back to Coventry for our only deserved home win. I know it's only small margins but they are mostly go against us, with two of our next 3 league games looking like virtually certain losses there's a danger we're sleeping walking back to Div 2. I'm not sure sacking DC will achieve anything but then again I'm not really sure he can turn things around either! Could we really be any worse under Holloway?

I mean obviously we aren't going to replace Bodin like for like but that isn't the point- the point is to avoid buying total crap but that is exactly what DC did by watering 80k up the wall on Mensah, in tandem with spending a massive portion of his budget on no goals Nichols. If his signings had even been average we would be doing better than we are now. The problem is that DC has bought rubbish with the money he has had to spend when a shrewder manager with better contacts in the game would have had better options available to him than the likes of Payne. Strewth, I know DC has done wonders up til now but why do people go to such lengths to make excuses for the fact that, Sercombe aside, he has signed some utter **** since returning to league one.
