I can't see Nichols getting back in the side until and unless we're safe. A temporary or permanent new manager won't want to persist in selecting him in the hope he comes good. Except the new manager comes in and says everyone's got a clean slate, sees him in training and picks him again, and we all have to start counting his non-scoring run from zero again. But this time he will only get 40 games to come good, not 60. Its a win win situation.

"Nicholls is not a " proven" goalscorer at this level. That's bollox. What is proven is his how ineffective he's been over two seasons." So you want to replace him by unproven strikers at this level, i ask again who would you replace him with so we can analyse your choice ? Like I said earlier after a season and a half it's quite obvious the only thing Nicholls has proven at league one level is that he is a failed experiment. I don't understand why you're trying to turn this into some sort of personal points scoring thing? Reilly and Jakubiak score goals. Nicholls doesn't. The choice seems obvious. You consider these two as "Proven" goal scorers ? With 1 goal each...... how many assists i wonder ? Tom Nichols had 3 assists in one game recently, but they don't count do they

I said Nicholls isn't a proven goalscorer at this level- he isn't. I said Nicholls hasn't scored goals this season- he hasn't. I don't really understand why you've tried to turn my opinion on a striker who hasn't scored a league goal since Halloween 2017 into a petty squabble about who's the bestest and most rightest poster on gaschat.

Both Jak and Reilly scored in reserves this week even.

Ok I hope you are right, but i can't see it myself

Let's face it we're probably going to lose this one, but the fact that expectations are low could allow the caretaker manager some latitude to mix things up a bit. If it were me I'd drop Nicho and Payne and give Reilly and Jaks a start and definately put Sercs in the middle. I'd also give Rollin an opportunity in the back line,we could with do with some strength in there. Would stick with 4-4-2, nice and simple so everyone knows where they need to be. Bonham Lightning Leads / Locks / Rollin / Kelly Bennett / Sercombe / Lines / Rodman Reilly / Jakattack I’d go with that but need a ball winner in the middle. It’s the old problem of need a playmaker but also need sercombe but also need a ball winner, which makes 4-4-2 difficult.

The trouble is with the strength of Sunderland's midfield with Cattermole, Honeyman etc, I'd fear for our Ollie (or Sincs if he were picked) getting wound up and getting sent off. Probably better to keep him/them for more important games.

Ok I hope you are right, but i can't see it myself I think that players who've scored goals this season are a better bet than one who has scored once in over a year against non-league opposition over and even then took 180 minutes to do it. And if it's so easy to score in these "mickey mouse games" why can't Nicholls do it there either?

In which case we could start with OC instead of Lines then and bring him on as sub if it's not working or for the last 20 if we can somehow keep the scores level until that point!

Anyone else think Nichols might be suited to a midfield role? On current performances I’d put him in ahead of Bennett. Pressure off a bit and he is technically one of our best players. I’d go 4-5-1 today and keep it tight.... jak up top simply for his pace....
You never know we might just sneak something today with the right set up. Can easily go 4-4-2 if behind!
Safe travels to all going.... do the club proud and sing nice and loud!

Chatted to Gavin Reilly's dad on the train! Apparently 4-4-1-1 with Jakubiak up top

Frustrating player who always looks like he’s about to do something great but rarely seems to. To be fair that’s exactly what Pompey fans told us when he signed too.

But he was creating everything when we first signed him, cutting in, shots, making plays, now? Seems out of sorts. Mind you, most of the squad have looked the same since the start of the season.

Probably peed off with training every day rather than spending time with his young family, I'd still like to see Bennett use the young rather than cutting inside every time, if the new manager can get the best out of Bennett we do have a very good player. Plus Rodman looked good in his last full game v Swansea.
