Our most creative player in our previous four seasons without a doubt . Up there with Billy Bodin, Matt Taylor , Lee Brown etc as one of our most important but created more goals than anyone. Needs wide players to hit with his great long passes alongside overlapping fullbacks to be at his best , he’s controlled so many games during that run and would have struggled in the narrow grinding but successful formation we’ve played to keep clear this season. If Cogs leaves and a new man who wants wingers/ inside forwards with overlapping fullbacks comes in I wouldn’t be surprised to see lines start our first match next season. Any league 1 manager who wants a playmaker in the middle with fast attacking wide players who love a through ball would consider him. The opinions of him on here recently remind me of Lee Brown last season. So many slagged him off too. Browny and lines have been our highest assists creators over the last four years , season on season. This season we’ve not had brown and hardly had lines and we’ve created f**k all. People have got short memories. If he’s fit for next season then he’s capable , in terms of ability , to be an important playmaker for a league 1 or 2 side next season. I don’t know if he’s hardly played this season because he’s unfit , personal problems , fallen out with the manager , who knows but we’ve missed the Chris lines who can control a game so badly this season. I hate the thought of us neither keeping nor replacing him next season because if we don’t we will be utter crap to watch. Great post. Agree with every word of that.

Interesting final sentence, given you’ve stated yourself he just hits those ‘great long passes’. Not exactly what you’d call ‘easy on the eye’ those raking Hollywood balls into absolutely nowhere at all.

Apparently there's going to be a presentation at half time.
John-Joe O'Toole will hand him the "Gas Legends" award, and Matty Taylor will sing his own rendition of "I Will Always Love You".

If you did you would have seen the way he consistently received the ball from one fullback and in a second played a cross field ball to the other wing to set a full back or winger spreading the play , dictating the tempo ? No ? Don’t get me wrong I know Chris lines the player and if Cogs is manager next season then lines is no use to him and cogs is no use to lines but as for Hollywood balls to nowhere at all ? You’ve either not been watching the Gas for more than a year or your memory reset at the end of last season.

I think he might do what he did when he joined us five years ago. Drop down a division or two and to a side with good movement out wide and if he does I think he’d do well and help them to promotion.
I’d rather that than him sit in the reserves at a club that plays narrow anti football. He’s a creative footballer he needs to be playing football and creating chances for an attractive team wherever that is.

The recent Lines I know is the king of the flashy pass, 30/40 yards when only 10 will do for his colleague that’s showing for the ball. The last 12months he has quite literally played on the toes of our centre halves. Your description is pretty much perfection, if this were 2007/2008.

I agree this season he was poor but the reason for that is we had no wingers and no overlapping fullbacks which is my point. Also he was playing in front of the back four in most in the games last four seasons. Deep laying playmaker. He needs width no point in him playing in a narrow formation. It’s not only since DC was sacked that we played this way this season. Under DC this season Bennet always ran straight on to the middle as soon as we had the ball, same Mathews , even rodman doesn’t hug the line. That’s fine if you’ve got overlapping fullbacks bombing down the outside but we haven’t had that this season. I’d rather go on the last four years where we have had that and lines has been great than this season where our style obviously hasn’t suited him. If you honestly think lines hadn’t been great for us since he signed in the conference season then I respect your opinion but I think we’ve been watching two different teams. We’ve been crying out for either him or an adequate replacement all season along with some width and we’ve created next to f**k all because of that.

No doubt he was a huge bonus for us in the conference, a player who could/should have been playing L1 for the entirety. He was easily the best player when he was on the pitch against conference opposition, although I’d argue across the whole season itself Lee Mansell was the driving force of that Rovers midfield. 2015/16 again very good for us & integral part of promotion (even though he didn’t score in 36 appearances) and our first year back in L1, he was decent. For me it’s the last 12-18 months including that rotten spell for what felt like the whole of 2018, that he hasn’t had his foot on the Gas at all. If he gets minutes tomorrow and there’s a hint of some kind of farewell gesture to it all, im sure he’ll get a rapturous reception from 90% of the ground as he well should.

This is spot on, in my opinion and one of the reasons why all of our midfield have been a bit lacking this year. If we have a team with some width and pace that would bring out the best in Lines, but I also think it would bring out the best in Ollie Clarke, who is reading the game much better these days, and Ed Upson, who is a better ball player than we have seen to date in a Gas shirt. We’ve been so narrow this year that our midfielders have constantly been having to try to thread the eye of a needle. Of course they will misplace passes in these circumstances. Hopefully this will be rectified over the summer. We have better players at the club than many think, but we need the right two or three additions to bring out the best in us.

He scored no goals in 33 games. If you mean the 14/15 season, Lines played 11 games and scored the first goal in the the 2-0 home win against Forest Green in the play off semi final.
The following season Chris Lines got 8 assists from 36 appearances and as anyone knows, he was playing in a deep midfield role for the majority, if not all of the season.
I can't believe the disrespect that is being heaped in Chris' direction by some on here. I thought Hudson was talking about the 15-16 season. And I just supplied the stat to show that he wasn't an ever-present that season. Lines is a club ledge afaic, and I'd have him here next year, if he wants to be here.

Is Lines better than Ollie Clarke - no
Is Lines better than Sercombe - no. Has Lines been better than Stuart Sinclair in the last four seasons - no Is Lines more reliable than Upson - no Is Lines more of a goal threat than Rodman - no Has Lines contributed to us staying up over the last four months - no Is Lines the future - no
If GC playa him today it will be a sympathy decision rather based on ability.
Hopefully he can have a 90 second cameo role, not touch the ball and leave quietly.
And for those interested there was a video on the official site where Chris Lines says he wants to play at the bottom of a diamond midfield. That is not the place for a creative midfielder to be.

All the best Chris, not the player you once were, but hope you get the 2 or 3 more apps to make it to 500 at a League 2 or non league side next season.

None of those listed deserve to be dropped to accommodate Lines

None of those listed deserve to be dropped to accommodate Lines Depends how you want the team to look going forward, I guess. I can certainly see a team without Upson but accommodating Lines. Or a more creative wingless effort, where you might play Lines instead of Rodman. And Sincs wouldn't be dropped coz he isn't being picked. I'd keep Ogogo in coz I think he's an under-rated component of our increased solidity. But there's defintiely room for Lines in the squad even if it's coming on for the last 25 when we're a goal down to try to ping it around a bit more.

And he had half a season to prove what is capable of and did nothing.
There is no sentiment in football and I hope GC plays his strongest 11 today with a strong bench. If he does then Lines can watch on from the terraces like the rest of us
As a matter of interest how do we know that today may also be the last time we see six or seven players in the quarters, sinc’s included. Should he play all of them.
Team today
Slocombe Leadbetter Lockyer Craig Kelly Servombe Lines O Clarke sinclair Nicholls Jakubiak
How many of those do you reckon will be here come pre season

Chris Lines has served us well and was integral to us getting out of national league and tier 2, had his moments in tier 1 but think its time to call it a day or move on ,back down a tier or two, saw him Tuesday in development squad game when we had wide men, did OK but did not dominate as one would expect, more to the point didn't really look interested ,always a difficult time when you age catches up with you and you have to accept that best days are behind you in one field but can't turn back the clock so time to say thank you Chris, good luck, decent servant though not in legend status, in my humble opinion
