Tom Lockyer- Great player Club Captain ,Over 250 appearances, Welsh international. Question Where would he have been without the backing of all the Managers at Rovers? made a regular player at a young age and fully backed when he went through poor runs of form if he goes on a free as is being suggested then my opinion of him is that he is no better than the Snake. Where is the class of Rickie Lambert who signed a new deal knowing that the club would sell him and make a good amount of money from it? Sorry Tom but if you have allowed your contract to run out then shame on you. Whoa, Steve, that’s a bit out of order. I think it’s not just your computer that’s having a funny turn this morning. Lambert didnt sign sign to give Rovers a payoff. He signed as it was the best offer he had at the time and THEN the offer came. Complete urban myth that he signed to give us a payoff. As for comparing Tom to the Snake, well that’s complete nonsense. Rovers offered him a new deal in January 2018 and he signed it. In January 2019 we were odds on to go down. Would you have signed a contract to keep you in a league 2 club? No you wouldn’t. Good luck to him. He owes Rovers nothing. He spent three years trying to play Championship football with Rovers. Rovers let him down, not the other way round.

Small clubs like bristol rovers cannot afford to risk having players on long contracts, the simple truth is that 2 year deals at rovers and endless clubs like ours operate in this way. Tom lockyer has been an outstanding defender for rovers and i wish him well in the future. When DC came in and changed the way we did contracts, it meant no more journeymen on 3/4 year deals which in turn made us a better team. The problem which we are now seeing is that this is affecting our best players and now almost all of them who have left have gone cheaply because their contracts have been coming to an end. Whilst I would still rather we sign new players on no more than 2 year deals, the strategy should be looked at and changed for our best players. Offer them 3/4 year deals then at least when the bigger teams come in for them, they would have to pay more. Agree with this and by and large it’s worked well for us. We’ve gone from non-league to middle League 1 on the back of it. You are probably correct about offering our best players 3/4 year deals but it sounds, in TLs case, that even if we did do that he didn’t want to commit for more than 18 months. TL has been a good guy for us but sounds as if he wasn’t prepared to do what Rickie L did by signing a new contract so we got a fee. Instead he’ll probably get the fee which will make up for him for-going any big wages over the past few years. Shame but we move on. UTG!

TL and his agent have used the rules of football to their advantage. He's done nothing wrong and neither have the club. If a player is intent on running down his contract then there is nothing the club can do and certainly nothing to do with being "amateurish". We are amateurish on many other levels though ! What has Tom done to disappoint you? If you think he should have only left when under contract earning us a fee at the expense of his own future income and signing on fee you are not living in the real world. He's been a fantastic servant to the club and should always have the respect of every gashead if/when he ever visits us in the future. Damned if you do then. Everybody moaning the snake had a low get out clause to benefit himself can't complain either. It happens time and time again, why let one of your key players contracts run below 1 year. Why were there not attempts to extend the contract sooner. Imo, if players are refusing to sign contracts to move on the free they shouldn't be starting every game. It's the way football is these days - the players hold all the cards and there's little the clubs can do if a player is willing to run his contract down to secure the best career and financial move. It's not without risk as a major injury at the wrong time could be a disaster for the player and his family. i don't think refusing to play a player stalling on a contract would help. Would be biting your nose off to spite your face. Whether we like it or not it's the way it is an no point getting upset about it. We always hear about there being no loyalty in football but when a player honours the length of his contract his loyalty gets questioned.

Exactly this. People will ask why we haven't been able to find a decent replacement soon. Go figure, we got no money to replace him... and then fund the wide players we desperately need, the attacking cms we need, the right back we need and the striker we also need. What people don’t seem to get is that’s its cause & effect. If we want to sign good players then ultimately we need to sell good players. Harrison going freed up money to sign THD, made money available for JCH in January etc. Lockyer going for free means we have no money at all. What are we going to replace him with? Our squad is generally getting worse & worse and we don’t have any money to reinvest because they all keep going for free/peanuts. Our current regime is taking us backwards, without a doubt. The only real asset we have on the cards are JCH & potentially THD Sign Curtis Nelson - I believe he has run his contract down and is available on a free? He's always been one of the best Centrebacks in the division. The rules work both ways - we can lose players free and we can get free transfers in too.

Can't see that position, with Killgor lined up, being a priority. But you're right, there must be a lot of Players out there, out of contract, we can approach.

Surely TL's agent would have advised him not to sign new contract, so making him more attractive to interested clubs. TL now has the outcome he and his agent wanted.... Best of luck to him Spot on. Being a free agent will maximise his future income and also bring more clubs in to the mix as potential destinations. If he was under contract with a £1m price tag round his neck there may have 1 or 2 interested clubs maybe? As a free agent he probably has a choice of 20+ clubs all of which playing a higher standard or better future prospects. Having decided he wants to take a new challenge TL and his agent have done things perfectly.

Personally after 8 years he deserves to go on a free. How much did we get for Brown? Nothing instead we got "he was a loyal servant and deserved to go". After you have done more than 5 years you should have the choice, and that is modern loyalty

He didn't get selected as an act of charity - he was a model pro, always committed and earned his place on merit. He gave us 8 years and stayed with us when we went out of the league. He's finally putting himself first and has acted in an exemplary manner. This Lambert stuff is urban myth surely? He may have signed a contract but did he know Southampton were coming in for him as that would have personally cost him hundreds of thousands of pounds in fees and wages. Not a chance in hell.

I can actually see stevek192’s point that he is making over the comparison with MT. I’ve never had many problems with MT going to a Championship club, we got £300k (?) for him after he had signed a short term contract, £300k more than we will get for TL, who will go to a Championship club having run down his contract. He’s a footballer who has to make the most of his time now and this will help him do it. In the end its the “Bristol City” thing that does it for MT. Any other club and he would still have maintained his reputation but because he did what he did he has a bad reputation. I’m sure TL will not sign for the s***, they’re in a different position now to what they were two years ago but were he to I bet comments on here would change and Steve would be proved correct. UTG!
ps btw I don’t expect many to agree!!

Always going to be different opinions. I think it is bad business to let your club captain run their contract down and leave on a free.
Other clubs at our level always seem ahead when moving players on for a profit.

Other clubs sell top goal scorers for 500k, 1m +.. our go to our local rivals for a steal at 300k.

Other clubs at our level always seem ahead when moving players on for a profit. If we had sufficient pulling power we could have sold Ellis for £700k or whatever it was and bought in Lyle Taylor. Other teams lose players on the cheap too and we have to be the ones picking some of those gems up and not just losing them. Win some, lose some.

They don't all do that. In fact, I'm sure the majority don't, otherwise they'd all be in the Championship by now.

Tottenhams star England Centreback run his contract down to join Arsenal many years ago and it's happened at all levels of the pro game ever since. We've had a few in the past few years which is obviously in very sharp focus right under our noses and at the club we love. I'm sure every club in the land with have similar examples and all feel hard done by - all forgetting the free agents they've picked up and done well from themselves.

Jesus, how you and others just don’t grasp the basics of this deal is beyond me. The only reason Taylor was prepared to sign another contract was if we inserted the 300k release clause. Without it he would not have signed, he would have gone for nothing and we would have missed out on 5 months of goals. What part art of this do you not understand??

It's the way football works these days regardless of whether we like it or not. i think part of the problem is that the real world doesn't match the X Box games and fantasy football leagues!!!!

Why couldn't Lockyer sign a contract with a release clause? At least we got something for the snake. You give the impression you think it is acceptable players leave for free. We obviously have different expectations, I want Rovers to make money from selling players where possible. No matter who it is, how loyal the player has been, TL is 24 year who is the club captain and international the fact he is leaving for free is a joke. The fact you can't see that is mind numbing.
